This case debunks so many misconceptions about rape. That it happens when you are out alone, or wore revealing clothes or invited the rapist in some way or was young. . The victim in this case is a respectable woman, at home, asleep with a person she trusted the most and who was supposed to protect her and is older. Thanks for standing up for women globally who don’t have support or good examples of success of their efforts.

Thank you for saying this. It is because society is patriarchal. Men are used to having a say in the way the world is governed. In South Korea it was alleged that husbands formed groups to volunteer their wives to be sedated, assaulted, filmed and shared within the group website. The horror for these women was how little justice was served. The sentencing (if you can it that) was that of shoplifting a candy bar. It is alleged that the women could no longer function or simply remained in the marriage. Men have no respect for our bodies because the law has none. Geeze

I think it's an adaptation of 'chemical straight jacket'. Whenever I come across Thoreau's quote 'Most men live a life of quiet desperation', I think this is especially true of women, especially in patriarchal cutlures (where women are encouraged to stay silent). The medical profession have been enabling this, by prescribing psychotropes to women, medicalizing their distress. 'Mad, bad, sad'...

It's not a euphemism for the act of rape, the term chemical submission refers more to the "weapon" used, in the sense that this was the method he used to incapacitate her before the assaults. It's like saying a kidnapping victim was restrained by rope, that's not a euphemism for assault either.

What needs to change is that men need to take responsibility and police other men's behaviour. It's incredible that so many men thought it was OK to have sex with a woman who was unconscious, and that they did this based on another man's word that she was consenting. Her husband's behaviour was appalling, but those men's behaviour was equally abhorrent. Not one single man who saw his ads or attended the scene, not one doctor that she saw about gynaecological problems thought to say there was something seriously wrong in the way this woman was being treated? Of course there are decent men around, but how often do women hear them challenging other men about their attitudes and behaviour? Men need to step up.

I saw a documentary on Arte TV years ago about the rape culture in France ("Elle l'a bien cherché" from Laetitia Ohnona). It was just mind-boggling. The young woman complaining of rape was being interrogated in a police station. In front of her, there was a huge poster of Fifty Shades of Grey. On her side, there was a poster for a local swingers' club, together with a black, sexy, above-the-knee boot with pointed toe and super high heel exhibited like a trophy on a set of drawers. Then on another shot, the policeman was in a different room. Pinned on the wall hung a set of martinets... I was flabbergasted.

In many countries, if you as the victim don't show up, they rule against you and clear your attacker, or slap them with mere community service if the state brings it on your behalf, bc it "obviously didn't matter that much if you wouldn't come to court." Why is he getting an ounce of compassion from a justice system that regularly penalizes the poor and mentally ill, who similarly have health problems flare up or implode with the stress of a trial?
