Although it's generally seen as hard to program, the DX7 Mk1 is actually well designed, in terms of its layout and how you proceed to program. Plus, the DX7 MK1 can produce amazing strings, warm pads etc, without any unison or layering (which it cannot do).

In this video, the Yamaha DX7 internal patch "Take Off"/ROM-1A patch "Take Off" got heard.

I own two Yamaha DX7's (The Original DX7 and the DX7S) and two Roland D50's and I agree that they are both great synths for making your own patches on. The DX7 also sounds even more great when adding chorus, reverb and delay to some of the sounds once programmed.

It's from a 1983 BBC programme called "If I Had A Hammer"- I still have the original on VHS - the cryptic title refers to a comment made by someone in the programme

yeah, I always add some effects to my DX7 as then you can level the playing field with synths that followed and see how great it really can sound. :)

What really makes a chorus sound is fixed freq mode on a carrier

No, but there's countless sounds you can get online and make yourself. Get MOTU's Unisyn to make as many as you want.

Detuning or unison is good on FM synths as they fatten the sounds and in some cases make the sounds better. I've always found unison makes FM sounds better and more impressive for pad sounds.

Yeah like I mentioned Unison fattens the sound like chorus. I have that unison function of my Yamaha DX7S.

@guakingo. The MK2 DX7 can do strings as thick as pea soup. Its called the poly unison mode. Turn that on and analogue has nothing on FM. But alot less in fact.

I've got both DX7 (II-D) and a D-50 and love them both, different architecture, different sounds, different uses but BOTH misunderstood in a modern context. Both are now misunderstood - forget the presets on both and use custom patches or make your own for real synth heaven. Both make good additions to a studio full of analog synths. Check my latest upload for my DX7 II and JX-8P random playabout :)

Not so painful, especially on the DX7 mk1. The DX7II I find less inviting to program, and never mind the PLG-DX boards, I mean, they simply give you all DX7 mk1 buttons but on computer screen. That's the most difficult way to program, not only you have to use the mouse, but you have to click all the DX7 buttons with it. So, if you get DX7 mk1, and understand how FM works, just the basics. But if you are for instant filter cutoff/resonance gratification, then DX7 is not for you.

Yeah, The DX7 is a great synth. Those who hate the DX7 are usually those who don't have any imagination and can't be bothered to program a synth anyway.

Do you find diamonds easy? Tell me how many guys with all their knobs and sliders come up with any sounds worth a hoot? Or rather theyre simply rehashing sounds done by vince clarke or the human league 30 plus years ago. I have a MK1 DX7 and MK2. Both are a piece of cake to edit once you understand the equivalents of decay/attack/sustain/release. Its called the EGR and EGL parameters. SIMPLES really. Lazy cant be bothered people do nothing of worth in this life. Analogue synths made 4 em.
