I sold my air because it is considerably louder than the spark. It always drew more unwanted attention than my spark ever did so I sold it. I also had connectivity issues with my air constantly.

If a Toyota Corolla meets my budget and needs, then telling me that I should buy a $50,000 Lexas because it has more features does not make much sense. Mavic with all its bells and whistles is fine for the semi-professional, but for the rest of us the Toyota Corolla of the drone world ( DJI Spark) will serve us well for the next few years

I recently bought the spark as you are not allowed to fly the air in my country without registering it (very expensive) and the Spark was nearly half the price of the air (580€ vs 1100€). Just couldn’t justify myself paying double the price for some minutes extra flight time, a backward sensor I don’t need (i usually never fly „blind“ in a direction without checking first and the sensors won’t help on thin things like branches) and 4K (file size is so big, I would still use 1080p anyway) I’d you are not a professional then I would recommend getting the Spark especially as DJI will probably come out with even better stuff in the future so you can save a lot of money now and buy even better stuff in case you feel the need to

I also had the Spark, and went with the Air, I like to take in in my pack when I mountain bike and the Air fits much better. I also really, really appreciate 60fps, there were so many times I wanted to slow down Spark footage, only to have it get choppy! I have been happy with 2.7K/60p for most footage, and ND filters are a must!

I already sold my Spark... (sold it quick, knowing the prices would drop and I wouldn't recoup as much on my investment) now I'm learning my new Mavic Air. :) One other plus is the speed of the Mavic Air. If you need to get to your location quickly so you can start setting up your camera and get your angles down.... 40+ mph is amazing! Also I've already had to use the internal memory from forgetting my blasted memory card. Sigh. OH... and you get a THIRD battery with the fly more combo of the Air. Which is super awesome as well. I found some cheap ND filters on Amazon from Anabee I'll be trying out in a week or so. Super stoked. Happy droning and I absolutely love your footage Francis!

I’m not exactly sure how the max distance for the Spark is 500m because I’ve taken mine out to a little over 1,828 meters until I had to turn around because of battery life.
@Justoneoftheguys
@Justoneoftheguys 6 жыл бұрын
Evanbear1 I agree. I pushed my spark to almost 2000 metres. I recently bought the range boosters that go on the antennas for $8 on Amazon. I got 2677 metres with them. If you can go past 1000 metres and high enough, that should be sufficient for capturing great footage. If I wanted to go really far. I would opt for the pro with occusync. Hands down, a world of difference with connection.

Depends on your frequency settings and that region your in, 5.8ghz about 500m and 2.4ghz about 2000m, some countries only allow you to use 5.8ghz band.
@hedleythorne
@hedleythorne 6 жыл бұрын
@@pean0928 A bigger factor is the WiFi mode. I use FCC mode which gives me a long range, and 5.8 ghz for the sharper picture. If I revert back to EU settings the range is crap for 5.8 ghz and the picture is bad in 2.4.

I started copter flying two years ago, getting a DJI Phantom 3 standard for Christmas. Not the fanciest drone at that time but perfect for a novice that was clueless. There is such a learning curve to go through, learning to fly, shoot, film and edit. Yes, I crashed big time too, hitting the top of a tree about 25 meters up and picking up many broken pieces thereafter. Pilot error, I was devastated. Due to budget constraints and pride I started my research on repairing drones and after watching countless KZbin videos on this subject and looking for parts on ebay I was able to put my bird back together and make it airworthy again. The Phantom 3 (still available on ebay) in my opinion is the best copter for beginners, it’s a bit rudimentary but that is part of the fun. Beginning of summer last year I acquired the DJI Spark with controller (a must). I love it’s size, portability and quality, the flight time could be better, bring a couple of spare batteries along. The Spark software does not (yet) support waypoint features and what really bugs me is the lack of course and home lock capabilities. C’mon DJI, can you please add this to the next GO 4 update? Would I love the Mavic Air? For sure but then again I have plenty left to learn with my Spark. At $ 399.00 including remote, the Spark is a steal and worth every penny. Have fun flying, learning, fixing!

I'd love to upgrade to the Mavic Air, but I am still pretty happy with my Spark and the extra dough in my pocket. The main things that annoy me about the Spark are the missing gimbal axis, the lack of frame rate selection, and the range... in that order. All in all, it's not bad enough to make me want to spend more money though. I love the fact that most people don't look twice at the Spark when I take it out to fly. It just looks like a toy, unlike some of the bigger drones in the lineup. Not sure if you still get that type of public disregard with the Mavic Air or not. Cool video, thanks!

I’ve always found the range fully capable of flying beyond where I can see. The video feed does get a bit spotty at times though, which makes things difficult.

Yeah the range is very inconsistent on the spark. In some built up areas with poor line of site I struggle to go 1000ft but I took it out to a huge undeveloped area outside of Sacramento last week and got it out well over a mile and a half with the range extenders on, otg cable etc. So it is capable of going a pretty good distance in good conditions. I guess the problem is that wide open fields of nothingness are not very interesting set pieces. Overall I'm very happy with the spark and I especially like how sturdy it is. I don't feel like I'm going to break this thing.

Using FCC mode I can get at least 1400m range from the Spark in the country and 1000m in urban area, though I am not sure whether I should use this. That said, I am seriously considering upgrading to the Air.

Let’s just say that money is not a problem for anyone... but the type of use you put into any of them, plays the bigger role. So my advice is... if you like flying close range, filming and taking pictures from a close distance from where you’re standing... then there is no reason why one should move from the spark to the Air. You can always upscale in post production and edit ... actually that’s a must wether you use the Spark or the Air But if you are the kind of person that likes flying high and taking stunning aerial footage or photography... then the Mavic Air is definitely the way to go! Now I’ve noticed that when you use active track on a very open area... they are both good but, the Spark will actually fly faster on active track... I hope they fix that on the mavic Air Also the Spark seems a bit smoother on active track. Like it keeps a more constant speed as opposed to the Air that follows then slows down and then catches up and makes the footage a little awkward. What are your thoughts on that Francis??? I’m guessing that could be fixed with an update right?

Max distance of the Spark is... FCC: 1.2 mi (2 km/2000 m); CE: 0.3 mi (500 m). The Air doubles that, for the US (FCC) and quadruples it for Europe (CE). Right? With that said, I'm in the US and plan to take my Spark to Europe this summer. I wonder if it's a flight data limitation (hard limit based on location) or just a "paper" limitation, as in you shouldn't go beyond?

I bought the Spark and don't regret it. An awesome little portable drone, at a fraction of the cost of the Air. To be honest, you can also create just as good videos as the Air with the Spark. I know the Air has additional features that will appeal to the majority, but again it comes to price. Yes it's the individuals choice and this little drone is awesome. Loving your videos and reviews. Great channel, thanks. 😊✈️👍

I have both the Spark and Mavic Air too. I had a Phantom 3 Standard which I sold to fund the Mavic Air. I plan to keep the Spark and Mavic Air and will travel with both so that I have a backup drone. The main feature that the Spark has that the Mavic Air doesn't have is PalmLaunch (by double pressing the battery button when it's powered up) which is great when you don't have a decent take off point. Although you can land both in your palm, it's at least officially supported on the Spark (and I think you can with gesture mode too but not tried it) and I still haven't tried it on the Mavic Air.

Can't go wrong with either SPARK or MAVIC AIR. I have both...however, I would encourage new drone fliers to start with the SPARK. The reason being, if you crash it or want a 'Tank' of a drone (I holds up very well). The fact that the Mavic Air is currently $999.00 (Mavic Air - Fly More Combo Pak) I would be extremely careful not to want an crash it and in turn probably not get some of the more 'risky' shots I've taken (or attempted) with the SPARK. Hands down the Mavic Air is a better drone....but the SPARK is still a great product for the casual flier wanting to get some decent pictures and videos. Francis, did a great job outlining the other highlights of each product. If you have the money...start with the SPARK and upgrade later to the higher end products.

I started with a Phantom3 but flew away after 14 flights (GPS Failed). DJI support took weeks to get back to me sent them all data etc they required didn’t want to know me followed them up numerous times. Then I bought the Phantom4 as I was hooked (mainly to try and look over houses were my P3 went down. I have over 180 flights now on P4 and love it. In the mean time as DJI didn’t want to know me I went back to the store were I bought my P3 and argued under Australian consumer law the drone was faulty , they gave me a store credit which was almost same as a SPARK fly more combo + $80 aust dollars. So I now have both P4 and Spark. The spark is fantastic and very portable I took to Bali on a holiday in January went thru Airport scanners etc no issues Fitted in my hand luggage. It’s a great little drone cant fault it. (Wouldn’t take P4 as too big) Purchased $10 Antenna range extenders and got nearly 3km with it. Interestingly the P4 states 27 minutes battery but I can only get 24 minutes Max. But Spark states 17 Minutes but I have flown on 0% for nearly 2 minutes getting 19 minutes total so better than DJI state. The only Negative with Spark is NO 4K video but a small price to pay for the portability , but on a positive the charging thru USB is great if out in the country you can charge in your car something P4 does not do.I highly recommend SPARK if on a budget but P4 is next level for me as I love distance tests etc and have got 6.6km out of my P4 (std) with range extenders. Can’t wait for P5 to come out, DJI are the masters in Drone Tech too bad there support does not match there products!

I bought a Mavic Air just before Christmas in a Black Friday sale when there was over 30% off the already discounted price so as I paid £655.00 for the Mavic Air fly more combo including shipping compared with £579.00 for the Spark Fly more combo it was close enough to be a no brainer. I wanted the Air anyway but couldn't justify its full retail price (to my wife mostly) and had been waiting for the price to drop. As my first drone the rear sensors and APAS obstacle avoidance and the better gimbal as well as the greater options for video, not only resolutions but pre-set video quick shots were quite important so even my wife can feel creative if we use it when we go out on country walks and want shots of big views and panoramic shots. Range is not a major concern but it may help if we want to get a little more creative on our trip to Canada later this year. It just seems for the difference in price between the two that £86 more gives use a lot more in functionality, video and with the extra sensors safety against crashes if we make a mistake.

I choose spark over air any day.... Spark is amazing!!!!!! The only thing missing in my opinion is the 3 axis gimbal. Other than that it's simply amazing for the price. I know the air is "smaller" but you CAN'T charge more than one battery at once and you can fit more stuff in a smaller space with the spark. For example. I can fit 4 batteries, spark, controller, prop guards and there's still room in my fly more combo bag. The main reason I chose the spark over air is that when you are on the "go" It's nice to be able to charge 3 batteries with a small inverter and also charge the 4th battery in the spark with a power bank in about 1.5 hrs in your car. You can charge 4 batteries in 1.5 hrs!!!!!! You simply can't do that with the air. And it sucks because it's advertised as a travel drone.. how can you charge batteries with no a/c electricity!!!!!! ONE AT A TIME IN YOUR CAR??? No thanks. Also I have the go pro karma that everyone talks shit about to get the "better" footage. I film lots of stuff with it and love it. In my opinion a better drone than the mavic pro. Land, under water, and sky. Plus gimbal stabilizer for go pro. Overall a very small package and amazing drone for the money. If you wanna make videos but don't have gear get the karma it's SO MUCH CHEAPER AND can do so much more. It's only 850dls with hero 6. But if you just want a drone get something else. Karma is only great as a package deal not a drone alone. Karma is extremely stable at high wind speeds, more so than the mavic pro or air . You don't have to mess with connecting a damn phone or tablet you just turn on the remote and drone...

Heyhey. I have the Mavic Air since a few weeks and I am very satisfied. I really like color grading my video, so the Mavic Air does a great job in recording for this purpose. I also like so many of its features:-) But for some private shots or travel memories, I would say that a Spark is enough. The only thing, that I really don't like on the Mavic Air is the battery life... 5 minutes longer would be so great... But I really like its size and that it fits in my daily bag. Its so great to put it out every time I see something great and just need to hit the record button:-) Catched some really great sunrises so far:-)

There's another factor thar tends to be glossed over. My Air is now back at the dealer for the second time. First time it wouldn't connect reliably, it came back fixed. After a while it began to demand a compass cal. every bootup. And then for those calibrations to fail, regardless of location or how distant from any possible magnetic interference... it's still there. Two dealer fixes since March. That's not good. Once out of warranty these trips to the dealer will cost me. Unacceptable. Pleas consider that when deciding. By the way I recently bought a Mavic Pro *1 new for £670. Way less than my Air cost. It's a better beast all round. More stable in the air, gives beautiful footage. AmazonUK was the seller.

Hi Francis, thanks for a great video. Seems the Spark made it's revolution that led later to developement of the Dji Mavic Air (Spark 2). I have one question though. As far as I remember in Ireland your friend had a GoPro Karma drone, did you had a chance to test it out? I am looking for a drone to film my sailing boat (low weight in this case is not as important due to the windy conditions I intend to film in). GoPro looks good on paper but I saw some discouraging reviews, maybe you have a first perspective view you can share? Keep up the good work, cheers!

The US$399 Spark currently includes the controller. The Fly More Spark is US$549. For the extra $150 you get two more batteries and the two charging devices. So it's still a good deal. But if you just want to get into the drone for the least amount the $399 is a great deal.

I am buying the Spark Fly More Combo and then switching it t the 2.4 ghz frequency to get more range here in the UK,. I saw it being done on a YT tutorial and it did 1 km easily . You have to disconnect your OTG cable from the phone before you make the switch in the settings apparently. But yea from a number of YT videos I have seen this work. Being that I am a beginner I definietly want the robustness of the Spark as I know I will crash it at some point, having some extra batteries will negate the worry of flight time and I will be only uploading in 1080p to YT. I will be using tripod mode to make those panning shots. This channel has shown you can get great footage with it and conviced me I dont need the expense of a Mavic Air yet!! By the time I have done my apprenticeship on the Spark, the Mavic Air should be a fair be cheaper too.

If you switch it to FCC mode you can fly it right out to 2 km. I have got 1.4 km using 5.8 ghz using FCC mode before the picture goes. That said, I am not sure how "legal" it is to do this, but from a control perspective I think it is safer as you have visual of your drone at all times. FCC is the big difference.

I've bought the Mavic air fly more combo for $1599 aus. Still waiting for it to be delivered, really excited for it. And I've gone for this rather than the Spark purely for the fact you can fold it up and put it your pocket. And as I'm backpacking through Australia at the moment, that seems more ideal. Plus I'm paranoid I'll end up crashing it going backwards 😅 but with all the sensors and the APAS system I feel more safer with it. Can not wait to get my hands on it and go for my first flight 🤩

Is the Air any more quiet than the Spark? Basically, is the Air worth an additional $500. ?? Me thinks yes...but....if your budget is squeaky, then it’s not a terrible decision to get the spark. What are the chances DJI will introduce something even better than the Air, in the same price point or less?

Tony Lauria I don’t find it to be quieter, but it’s not as high-pitched so it’s a little less annoying in my opinion. Still not too noticeable once it gets up 20 meters or so.

He Francis, for the moment I'm on holiday making some panoramic flights around castles in Germany. I tought about selling my spark for the air because of the 3 axis gimbal but I have a battery pack and 2 more batteries so this wilt be difficult I think. On the other hand I never tought to have a drone at all and I'm not a professional so, like you said, 'a big smile and be happy' . Thanks for the review and show us more pro-footage like you always do.

A very good question! I am thinking about getting a Mavic Air, but am still waiting to see if they release a Mavic 2 and what all it has to offer? If I do get a Mavic Air, I may just give my Spark to my oldest son so he can get into the sport of flying and video. He is sooo good at photography, I wish he would because I know he would get good at it very quickly! Awesome video by the way and some really nice footage!

Hello i am from Japan and i got the Spark with the controller in promotion from dji for 55.000 ¥ (around 500$) and now got two 2 Battery and spark portable Charging Station for about 220 $ ... everything was 720$ (and i am pretty happy )...for you have a kit like this in the mavic air new you gonna spend at less 1.200$ i know all the features for video(pretty important if you are a filmmaker ) or flight are more " pro " in the Mavic Air , but have a huge diference in price between Mavic air and Spark ...I think Spark and Mavic Air are amazing products for their prices ... but if you have more like 500$ for expend in your drone go to Mavic Air .

Hi Francis about the spark about 5 months and I love the hell out of it I bought the Mavic air about 6 weeks ago love the hell out of it too I'm keeping both because I want to be able to use it's park in nice tight confined areas and not risk the more expensive Mavic air I got the Mavic air purely for it's hire frame rate and better quality resolution. Recommend anyone that has both to keep both and not sell off your spark as it is still a gem when it comes to nice low and close to object flying I know it doesn't have that a p a s like the Mavic air but for quick catches I can edit and render and export in 1/4 of the time of the Mavic air footage, I hope you enjoyed your stay in Queensland Australia love you vlogs happy flying mate

I think when you need the capability of mavic air, buy it. I don't have a drone yet and it's a hard decision because now I don't have a hardware to process even 1080p and I don't know if my enthusiasm about it stays, so I'll probably stay with the spark and when I'll need it, I'll buy a better drone. Maybe even mavic pro or even the autel EVO I don't know. Also the spark is not foldable and I take it as advantage because it's theoretically immortal. Every wire you twist or bend will break in time like a cable in my laptop when you open and close the screen ... :(. And I love the spark even I don't have it ... I like your videos. You have a feeling for it. Hope I'll do so good.

I recently purchased the Spark over the Air. I am a still photographer but want to explore video. Right now (June 2018) you can buy the Spark at half the cost of the Air ($400 vs $800 at Best Buy). Both come with a battery and RC controller. Batteries are $50 for the Spark vs. $80 for the Air. I have three batteries now - got the second & third bat for a total of $75. The Air is a far better drone but not worth twice the cost for me. I'll wait for the Air to drop in price and if it goes like most technology - I may have both - two (2) drones -- for a total cost of $900 by next year. Money aside, isn't it interesting how everyone loved the video of the Spark just a few months ago - before the Air came out. Actually, I've been filming and really do love the footage. I know 4k will get here eventually, but keep in mind, most all of cable TV is in 1020p, so we're seeing the same quality with the Spark as we do on our big screen.

Everyone knows that the AIR is better than the SPARK however if you can get the spark (Fly more combo) used for around £300 - £350, do it! It's an incredible piece of tech that will add to your photography/videography arsenal! The Air Fly More combo is still hovering around £900 used, which is for most people and photography enthusiasts out of budget. Just my 2 cents ;)

The deciding factor for me is people seem much less intimidated by the tiny Spark, so it makes it into the air more often. Number one factor, will people freak out because of the drone your flying and try to shut you down, or give you grief?

I have a Mavic Pro Platinum. I never thought I'd want something easier to launch. I bought a Tello, which I enjoy, but I'm beginning to want the stronger Spark for those times I just want to quickly throw up a drone for some quick photos. Update 4-12-2018 I did get the Spark. It's now my quick flight drone, when hiking or going to town, so easy to launch. I still use the Mavic for long missions, to check cows, hay, water, gates or see new calves.
