Frank Furedi speaking against the motion at our debate "Western parents don't know how to bring up their children".
Event info:
Why are there so many Chinese maths and music prodigies? Because Chinese mothers believe schoolwork and music practice come first, that an A-minus is a bad grade, that sleepovers, TV and computer games should never be allowed and that the only activities their children should be permitted to do are ones in which they can eventually win a medal -- and that medal must be gold. These methods certainly seem to get results, so perhaps western parents should start being more pushy with their children. But is it defensible to cajole and bully one's offspring to success? Isn't it better to be raising happy, rounded individuals rather than burnt-out brainboxes? Who's right and who's wrong?

some state actors want to interfere in children’s upbringing, significantly supplanting parental influence, hence their infantilisation of parents. Yeah parenting is the hardest job in the world, but we’re the government and we are here to help…

Man, he really nails it when he says that Western parents live their lives vicariously through their children. And that problem is compounded exponentially by the fact that Western lives are now defined by a materialistic culture. The art of developing character in one’s children instead of material success has been lost and values, that is, culturally determined values, have replaced virtue.

Furedi really is the archetype of a "left-winger" who never really was one and later "became" a reactionary elitist. When he's talking about "young people today", he's really talking to himself as a young person.

@TylerWayMoore You see this is where Eastern comes in, They would say "You should never make fun of someone who makes progress, no matter how small." I think that's the point, but your right also in that ultimately winning is kind of like a game of Yahtzee (skill/luck) Also there isn't much gold these days and what makes gold so special anyways? I can live without it for sure. Parenting is best witty and quirky. The big problem is what he said self-centered insecurities + arrogan

@amaqula Gulags and Concentration camps were horrible but very limited - they only affected a tiny fraction of the European population. The medieval church's rule over even the most private aspects of life, however, was totalitarian just like it is islamist countries or North Korea nowadays. You should be aware of the fact that Hitler was a roman catholic and was strongly supported by the church. Stalin was even trained to be a priest. I guess you should really catch up on European history.

This is soo true. I am so sick of parents helicoptering their kids and patting themselves on the back like it was the most difficult thing in the world. It really annoys me and I keep telling them: friend, you need to get a life. After the kid knows how to talk, talk and read, your involvement in their lives should diminish by 5% every year.

@Cinthorc Of course I do other things apart from KZbin.....but I don't want to tell you. And leafleting is ineffective...as it is time consuming....and KZbin reaches more people. And I have the computer at my fingertips...so why not. But yes...other things and other people are happening too....not just little ol me. LOL. CATHOLIC STATE please!

it almost sounds to me like this guy advocates abuse tbh. he's very sneaky about it though.. saying things like "parents intuition is undermined"

It is undermined, especially in the legal system. Currently, parents are fighting that. We’re held responsible for everything in our children’s lives… but when it comes to lawfully saying no or standing up to whatever flavor narrative is current, parents are bashed for it and shown to the world to be crazy. He’s absolutely right with everything he said.
