Frank I had an R22 and a set of stainless steel blades showed up because I lived near salt water. I was impressed before but that blew me away. I hated having to sell mine because my wife was sick. I don’t have any idea how I’ll get another but the hours spent flying the R22 and the R44’s with Andy Gibb were special. Sorry Andy died and Dr. Nickols from Whitestone too! Since the Popular mechanics showed a gentleman pushin a helicopter into his garage. A dream that came true. Thank you for designing the R22. I flew several other helicopters in my life but fell in love the first time I flew the R22

I will never forget the first time. Met Frank… it was at the Helicopter Association International Show in Miami in 1993. He just got the R44 certified, and I was opening every panel, so I could to look at it. While I was in the military I use to go to a local airport in Maryland to fly. I had an emergency at Washington DC executive in a R22, where one of the bearings burned up in flight. I was looking throughout the R44 for what was changed and thought Frank was a sales guy. I was working for the FAA at the time as an Airway Transportation Systems Specialist… I didn’t certify or remove aircraft certifications, but anyone with an FAA on their badge was looked at as trouble. I looked at his symposium badge and saw Robinson, so I naturally thought he was an employee there to sell helicopters. I began to explain how I had to put an R22 down because of a bearing failure. He looked at me with a bit of a concerned look on his face. He began to explain what was changed from the R22 to the R44. He explained that the bearing had been changed from round to roller bearings. I then chimed in; wouldn’t that cause more friction, more heat, and a quicker failure. He stopped and looked at my symposium badge again. I realized he was looking at the FAA. Still not knowing who I was talking to, I said, it is no big deal just tell one of the engineers my thoughts. It was then he said, you are talking to the right guy, I’m Frank Robinson… I went from smart ass 20 something punk kid to worship mode in a split second. I thanked him for making the R22 because without it, I never would have got to fly a helicopter. For me it was like meeting the Wright brothers…or Schweizer for helicopters.

I got my private helicopter rating in 1983 flying R22 beta at the long beach California from PWR (Pacific wing and rotor) flight school.

Holy Shrike Batman! At 0:32 look at that coning angle on main rotor!!! If it were coned more we could pour vodka martini into it! In modern 2 and 3 bladed rotor rigs, that amount of coning is 1 second away from hub separation. I guess engine and gearbox were barely able to provide torque to spin that rotor at minimum RPM.

I love your passion, and your determination. People of your sort should live 200 years or more it is so sad that we live such a short time on earth, I guess God have a better plan.

Hi, I only recently developed an interest in helicopters. I’ve been fixed wing since 1974, though I’m pretty rusty now. I thought they were building these in Eastern Europe. I had no idea it was an American company. Thanks for the video.

when was this video produced and released? It looks fairly dated but I could be wrong. I heard he just came out with some new instrumentation in the cockpit. Good on him to keep the units fresh and still relatively cheap.
Fixed wing pilots dance a balet with air. Rotary wing pilots beat the krap out of air into submission.

Flying incinerators. Why don't you fix the known problems with your fuel tanks, instead of advising pilots to wear fireproof suits?

They did with the Beta II.

turpy1234- Pro tip, all helicopters turn into barbecues when you crash them. Try improving the skills of the pilots and/or not fucking around with them in ways they were never designed.
