That's my Aunt Francis on the far left playing violin. She's now 93 years old and still playing. I asked her about it and she said Frank wasn't attractive to her as he was still a teen, he even invited her to go to a party that night, although her mom wouldn't let her as she was only 15. Throughout her life she played at shows in Vegas with Elvis and many greats. Hearing about this time and how much fun she had is amazing.

Gentleman Frank it's because he was taught by a retired metropolitan opera singer. There have been many people that could sing with sinatra's diction but they didn't sing pop music which sinatra did. It's really sinatra's older voice that is hard to replicate

His diction is wonderful and his tone is wonderful.. but also his eloquent phrasing is another thing that sets him apart from other singers. Additionally he rarely sang anything exactly the same live..which kept his performances very interesting.

It's all about control, that is the most important part out of everything. All the ingredients, breath control, diction, vibrato, head vibrato, gut vibrato, developing the diaphragm, stomach muscles, it takes a LOT of practice. Something I never realized is that the voice literally is like an instrument no different from any other instrument, the more you practice the better you get at it. I always thought you had to be born with it, but that's really not the case. The more you do it the better you get, and you never stop getting better. Somehow the brain is able to make more and more neuro -connections when it comes to music and practice whether you are playing saxophone or voice where it can make these fraction of the second decisions and corrections to keep a musician or singer on the "tightrope" of playing or singing perfect. Frank must have sang constantly for years, I mean like from waking up to sleeping, all day every day for years before he even began to sing pro.

When I was a kid- Sinatra was a staple of tv shows like Dean Martin's show, The Tonight Show, as well as his own specials. His albums were in almost every household in America- including mine. I never understood what all of the fuss was about. Then I got an album of hits from the Big Band Era. I may have been around 12 years old. On the album- a young Sinatra sang This Love of Mine". His voice was pleasingly smooth and clear as a bell- much like his singing on this film clip. He sounded completely different from the older Sinatra that I was used to hearing. This younger version of Sinatra is an almost perfect vocal instrument. This version of Night and Day is exquisite. I've come to appreciate both Sinatras- young and older; however the young Sinatra is an absolute joy.

Never understood the big deal over Sinatra. That is, the Sinatra I grew up hearing: the Sinatra of the 50s through the end of his life. He wasn't that impressive for me. Like this version, but I absolutely adore his and Nelson's up tempo 1957 version of this Cole Porter classic. That was the difference for me. There's no arguing the brilliance of such songs as 'One for My Baby,' and 'Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars,' but I'll take the swingin Sinatra of 'I've Got You Under My Skin, 'Lady Is a Tramp,' 'Luck Be a Lady,' 'Summer Wind' and 1966's 'All or Nothing at All' any day.

This is one of the earliest songs I can remember. At the beginning of the war my late dad was on leave and his brothers to him to the pub. When he came home he was sick on his dinner. He kept singing this song. Shortly before of this I used to wait at the top of the road so that he would give me a ride home on his bike. I could only have been two or three at the time.

Around the time of this movie, 'Reveille With Beverly', Frank was at the peak of his powers as the voice of the century, and was the wealthiest single private individual in all the USA. And the most generous and profligate with his money. He wanted to capitalise on network radio music shows, usually only 15 minutes long, including commercial messages, so because of the vast time differences across the continent, he would do a live show with his own arranger's orchestra on a major network out of New York and then after the live show, he would fly the whole caboodle - arranger, producer, song-sheets, etc. - out to L.A. in Calif in a chartered plane to do the same show live once more on a West Coast network. No easy tape recording in those days, only 78 rpm one-take discs. Tell that to youngsters today - and they don't give a ****.

If you get a chance watch the movie. It is on YT. It features Duke Ellington, Freddy Slack and his band, Ella Mae Morse (singing Cow Cow Boogie which is a great jive song and you will recognize it as they used it a few years ago for a gum ad)The Mills Brothers, Bob Crosby (Bing's brother) and his band. It was made during the war and it was the kind of movie where the audience especially the miliarty got to see a lot of their favourite bands and singers.

However, the media somewhat considered him to be a freak at the time and hated him. By the 50s, Sinatra got much older and he was praised by men and women. Critics were on him calling him the best singer of all time. When The Beatles became popular, Sinatra had like 25 years in the music business and was a LEGEND. Critics and people LOVED HIM.

I love all of Sinatra's recordings, but I have a soft spot for 1940s Frank, because his youthful voice was one of the loveliest things I've ever heard. It's a pity he thrashed it so hard, but he maintained his superb technique and emotional expressiveness as long as he lived. Of the great pop singers few rival him in my affections--Al Bowlly, his remarkable predecessor, pioneer of modern pop/jazz singing with equally exquisite diction and that heartbreakingly pure tenor, died far too young....Bobby Darin, versatile, mercurial genius, great actor as well, also gone much too soon....extraordinary Tony Bennett, with that powerful, sweet, clarion voice, miraculously still singing in his 80s.... that's about it, honestly.
