He didn't smoke early Sinatra. See most people who have heard of Sinatra they have no idea how phenomenal of a singer Sinatra was between 1942-1945, they've only heard him after he damaged his voice with the booze and cigarettes, perhaps vocal straining as well. Here's an example of early Sinatra kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIXSn4Ord6mAfLc

OMG...i'm only a couple of minutes in and I was looking forward to hearing what they had to say about that....... I've been enjoying this podcast but I have noticed they have a trend of choosing the bands that they hate on based almost SOLEY on the singer or the fans of and/or concepts related to said band, but they don't really do a ton of research - it's all surface level hate. Frank Sinatra deserves some deep meaningful hatred. He truly sucked......he did it his way for sure....and was a huge POS.

you guys are dissin' some "sacred cows ". frank is the first "bernays" pop star, completely fabricated and supported by parlor tricks. Rhythmless, tone deaf, bad listener. his " timing " is arbitrary and not a result of artistic choice. He was afraid of Elvis because Elvis WAS actually a great singer, and although he could come off as a little insincere, his talent was evident and his gospel records are fantastic. anyway, thanks for approaching these taboo artists who are generally thought of as " obviously " great. question the icons, break the spell. to appreciate an artist is one thing, to treat them holier than thou is asinine. maddona sells a lot of records mcdonalds sells a lot of burgers volume in sales DO NOT equate to quality of product.

One thing I would throw out there is how much better Sinatra's music sounded compared to other pop music at the time -- go listen to the top artists at RCA, Columbia, and Capitol back in the late 40s and 50s and you'll see how much better Frank's music was during the time. The exceptions are who we could all name Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin? I mean the list is pretty short for pop music. And your comparison of Frank with Justin Beiber is spot on with the exception that Frank was the first to do it, there was nothing like him before -- the closest thing to pop stars before Frank would be Bing Crosby and Al Jolson. All that said, really enjoyed the episode even tough I disagree 100%.

Name 1 other song besides Moon River or some Christmas Song from Andy Williams ... Yes, Frank's music after he retired in '72 (i.e., My Way and NY, NY) is bad, but listen to his first albums on Capitol in the 50s -- Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Sings Only for the Lonely, A Swingin' Affair, come on, these are classics.

I would argue that Sinatra was overrated after the 50s and that his vocal peak was early to mid 40s, and it's kinda frustrating because most people have never heard Sinatra at his very best.

I always assumed Frank Sinatra must write all his song because his voice is so average that it just sounds like some guy doing karaoke

Whitney Houston had a great singing voice. But her songs were overratedly repetitive usually.

You dislike the genre. It's too far separated from our generations tastes. If you say you listen to other singers that did his style of music, you're full of shit. Even I don't like that music, but as a person, he was a badass. And he could act. Check out the man with the golden arm, where he plays a strung out heroin addict.
