Frank Stella In Memoriam at JEFFREY DEITCH

James Kalm was saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Stella on May 12, 2024. Having grown up in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Stella was probably one of the most influential artist for a generation or two of young creatives. Since then, Frank always seemed to be far ahead of the rest of the art world herd as far as aesthetics. His “Exotic Bird” series was a precursor for the “Pattern&Decorative” movement. His transition into more high relief works privileged a type of approach that was picked up by the Neo-Expressionists. And his recent foray into high tech computer-generated forms gives permission to cadres of like-minded artists seeking a means of going beyond the limitations of standard sculptural concepts. “Recent Sculptures” is a fitting capstone to this model career, and an admonition and potent example to young artists to follow your passions. I appreciate your channel because you cover the rounds of NYC galleries that are distant to me. That said, I find it difficult to believe that Frank Stella could have designed these sculptures. I accept that he did not cast them or assemble them and that a hands off process is the luxury of mega successful artist like Stella. It seems obvious that these were drawn up in 3D computer programs and I find it impossible to believe that a person of Stella's age could have knowledge of the sophisticated computer programs necessary to create these sculptures.

Frank has been using the most sophisticated 3D modeling technology since the early 1990s. If anyone knows how to work with computers for an artistic purpose it would be Frank Stella. Here are some quotes from a 2012 article that appeared in Arts & Antiques "He started using computers as an aid to art-making as far back as 1990, when he was working on an architectural commission in Holland that involved wave forms...In digital fabrication-an umbrella term that includes 3-D printing as well as CNC (computer numerically-controlled) machining and even digital knitting-the artist visualizes and designs the work on a computer, which then sends detailed instructions to machines that extrude and shape the pliable material. Essentially, it’s a way of translating one’s visions into reality with a degree of freedom previously inaccessible, certainly at such speed." I concede that Frank had a lot of people working for him (I used to walk past his East 13th Street studio in the early 1980s and was impressed with all the employs grinding away), but I maintain that he was in control of the concepts and designs...Just sayin' (here's a link to the article www.artandantiquesmag.com/frank-stella-3d/) ...JK

The American Abstract artists set out to really create an 'American' Art. I think Frank really achieved it ultimately.

I met Mr. Stella at Princeton University Art Museum and he discussed wanting to capture ‘Smoke’ from his cigars. Think this is as close as he got unless there’s more to come? Thanks Kate

Great show and I think you might be onto something there with Art Gallery Barbie. A whole new source of income for artists who produce, in collaboration with Mattel, limited edition scale models of their exhibitons with a suitably dressed Barbie included! The fanatic Barbie collectors would snap them up. 😄
