The great Adrien Belew. His Work with King Crimson in the 80s was incredible. Also with Zappa, Talking heads and other noteworthy contributions. Adrian might very well be one of the best “distortion guitarists” of all time. He’s a super talent. As are many people that have come out of the Zappa Colony. Lol

That is Adrian Belew singing. He played with Zappa for a couple of years only. Adrian Belew is a phenomenal guitarist and vocalist and he has as deep a resume as possible. He's played with Zappa, King Crimson, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and more. And yes, Bozzio deserves monster status.

One of my favorite Zappa tunes! So glad they were able to catch this live. Adrian Belew is such a talented addition to the band. His vocals are killing it and he’s also scorching on the guitar. Frank dishing out some more of his talent on that flaming guitar solo and I love the effect of the guitars playing in sink after the solo. Killer view of Terry Bozzio doing his thing! Great review. It’s my understanding that Adrian Belew left this band to play with David Bowie.

Adrian is the man. Zappa found him playing in a cover band on Nashville. He was so good Zappa asked his join his group even though he couldn’t read music. He had to learn it all by ear. A year later Bowie saw this band in Berlin and he ask Adrian to join his group. Zappa was not thrilled haha. Going from a cover band to Zappa and Bowie in a year. So wild. Adrian went on the work Talking Heads with and then joined King Crimson for the 80-90s era of the group.

Adrian Belew. was with Frank for this tour. he was more commonly known for his work with Talking Heads and King Crimson. the track Frame by Frame (King Crimson) is something else. On SUAPYG Frank put a track down called 'The Carlos Santana Chord Progression' and Carlos thought Frank was taking the piss, but Frank meant it in a positive manner, apparently. Anyway Carlos saw his arse about it.. Though I'm sure underneath it all they respected each other. Frank thought that Tezza Bozio was the his favourite drummer. It's an inane pastime deciding who is better than anyone else. it's all circumstantial. but all Franks drummers were certainly upper echelon.

Every different band they both put together were monstrous with players like George Duke, Coliuto, Pontii, Graham Leer, Shrieve, Alphonso Johnson, Chester C Thompson, Neil Schon, Vai, Bobby Martiin to name a few. I HAVE SEEN Zappa last two bands live and everu Santana lineup since 1982. Amazing stuff

Terry Bozzio is easily in the same category as Peart & Bonham..... He's an absolute pioneer of the craft and provided some of the most memorable performances ever seen with Frank's band, Adrian Belew on vocals is stunning here as well (also played with King Crimson) among others, the whole band are fire anyway....Frank knew how to choose and get the best from his musicians... loved your reaction Rory, thanks.

Long story short - Adrian Belew is someone you really should study - solo, with King Crimson, with Bowie, with Reznor, with the Heads, (even) with the Bears (maybe), most thing he involves himself in are worth hearing... unlike Zappa, Belew is one of those logical successors to Hendrix in terms of expanding the guitar, as much by investigating technology as expanding manual technique.. City Of Tiny Lites - a song Frank seemed to like more than his fans (for whom it became a chore by 1981) - obviously the lyric is Frank's idea of what Los Angeles looks like to a tranquilizer addict. Evidence suggests Frank was a frustrated ex-fan of Santana - religion, unsurprisingly, was the sticking-point. (Btw have you heard any 1972-74 Santana? That's the golden era, when he had people like Leon Thomas, Airto, Jules Brossard and Alice Coltrane in his circle). Finally - re: Frank and his interaction with drummers and bassists - if you really want to hit the motherlode, try the parts 1-2-3 version of City Of Tiny Lites contained here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onjcnoevbcifm8k

Bozzio was that perfect fit with concert sales, album sales, live prime TV,AND Rockjazz drum style. Excellent heavy metal style voice. The perfect fit Frank ever found in a drummer.

Regarding attracting musicians, I mean once you've played with Zappa you pretty much have proved yourself on a world stage. Playing in Zappa's band would be a lifetime achievement. There is a story of one drummer that interviewed for Zappa (sometimes there would be hundreds to interview including some flying from Europe on their own dime) that got the part, then immediately told Frank that he had a health condition and couldn't accept the position. Frank asked him what the heck, and he stated "I just wanted to see if I could do it!" For Ruth Underwood for example, his long-time percussionist, it was the shear joy of playing with Frank; anything else was just too boring for her. Frank also saw the potential in those he hired, and wrote music tailored for that musician to push them to the edge of their abilities, for example, The Black Page for Terry Bozzio. His drummers were exceptional. He had drummers leaving for Weather Report (Ralph Humphries), leaving to play with top name popular acts (Chester Thomas to Phil Collins), and Vinnie Collauto that later played with Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, Buddy Rich, and Jeff Beck to name a few; Chad Wackerman also played with Allan Holdsworth.

Great reaction - Bozzio is without a doubt several levels above Neil Peart. Dont get me wrong Peart is great and all but its mostly fancy extrapolations of "rock" drumming and he cant really hang with guys like Bozzio who have mastered jazz/fusion *and* orchestral *and* play rock just as well as rock drummers. Same goes for Vinnie, Dunsbar and all of Zappa's drummers: all beyond Peart
