You really should watch Baby Snakes, which is the definitive Zappa concert movie of the 70's... One of his great musical bands with some real personality with the players...

True story - back in 1993 I knew some of the people on tour with Duran Duran - and I think we were in Seattle. I was getting something from hotel room of someone on the crew, and a phone call came in that Frank Zappa had passed away. Warren Cuccurullo was playing with Duran at the time and it had to be me to give this awful news to that crew member (who may have worked with Zappa) and Warren - that he had passed. Awful. It should've come from someone closer but life is strange. Surreal moment and one I've rarely talked about.

This song was my introduction to Zappa. You are right about Terry Bozzio, one of the greats!

PRIME FRANK. Zappa/Bozzio era. NOT BEFORE mid 75,NOT AFTER early 78. Terry was the best drummer fit for Frank in his 28 yrs.Not Vinnie, and not Thompson. Bozzio was that perfect fit with concert sales, album sales, live prime TV,AND Rockjazz drum style. Excellent heavy metal style voice. The perfect fit Frank ever found in a drummer.

What Rory probably doesn't know is that there's a verse missing from these later performances which establishes that the Devil encounter was really just a drug-induced hallucination. And that there are better performances from the '77-78 tour which either have Frank describing how he'd go about torturing WB executives, or explaining his impending lawsuit, or (e.g in the British shows) seemingly carrying on a real argument with Bozzio through the imagery of the song (e.g in the "Ruth told me..." and "jazz devil" versions).
