A special documentary I've always wanted to do. I've managed to get a hold of 2 SD cards to put some storage on so I can get back to work on my videos. By the way I'm putting bloopers more often in my videos.
Notes: An Acela was also hit by rocks near where the SEPTA was hit. The chatter between both trains was enough to distract Bostian.
Please donate!
Thank you!!!

I was a passenger on this train.. it was the most surreal experience of my life. I’ll never forget it, it crosses my mind everyday still and I’m so fortunate I survived with minor injuries. I was in the third car, it flipped onto its side. Four people in my car unfortunately died as well. It was certainly a teaching moment for Amtrak and the industry, and hopefully nothing like this ever happens again!

I was in the second car on this train. I remember feeling it speed up but I figured we were almost there. Then I felt the train lift from the ground as we hit a turn. The cars tipped, lights broke, Windows cracked, and people flew. My friend I was riding with had a concussion from the tilt. When the train tilted I was able to catch myself, but she slammed her head against the other side of the car once it tipped. I will never forget how fortunate me and her were.

@@Noah-wv4td It appears that people can be just as vindictive as they can be immature. It's just another showing of how we humans tend to behave with savagery for entertainment. Teenagers aren't exactly the smartest people out there. They don't tend to think about how their actions affect others - that part of the human psyche doesn't tend to develop until they're more mature. Doing stupid shit such as throwing rocks at trains is more of an act of childish arrogance. They aren't really looking to hurt anyone - just fuck with people in a way they think is harmless. Malevolence, on the other hand, is when you actively try to hurt people, not caring about whether you kill them or not.

Just some critiques on the balance. In this video and several others, the music, particularly the "Not-Runaway-Theme" uncomfortably overpowers your voice. If you drop all the music by 4db and boost your voice by 4db, or just boost your voice as much as you can without clipping, that should help just enough while keeping the audio balance you intend. It's hard to pay attention when your voice is being drowned out. Maybe throw a tiny little bass boost on your voice to give it some more punch, to account for whatever microphone you're using. The music balance during the segment on Bostian's trial is pretty much spot on though. So keep that in mind.

Ya.. the prosecution of him isn't based in any sense of justice for wrongdoing but out of emense grief for the loss of life, and anger that it happened. His loosing all situational awareness due to hearing the unusual transmission about the broken windshield on the septa is the kind of thing that can happen to anyone. I'm sure nearly everyone has had at least 1 moment when something unexpected distracts their attention and causes them to momentarily loose their bearings in some reguard. He was just in a position and place for that to result in a mistake with tragic consiquences.

Criminalizing innocent accidents is a very dangerous thing for a transportation system. The FAA changed philosophy some years ago from "enforcement" to "compliance." Boiled down, these changes meant better systems for reporting safety risks and immunity against revocation or suspension of pilot's licenses for honest mistakes. The result for technicians, flight attendants, dispatchers, and pilots like myself is the freedom to report our mistakes and document the chain of events that led to mistakes so that they can be known to the entire aviation community. This data has been incredibly helpful to safety improvements in every part of airline travel. To criminally prosecute honest mistakes would greatly discourage the reporting of those mistakes that did not lead to accidents and thus hold back safety improvements by decades.
@jimbell4137
@jimbell4137 5 жыл бұрын
This WASN'T an "innocent accident". It was at least indistinguishable from a deliberate crash, since the engineer brought the speed up to 106 and only then applied the brakes. How do you know it was an "innocent accident"?

In the UK (I'm a train conductor there) our awful curve was at a place called Morpeth on the East coast mainline. Alot of that line is at 100, 110 or even 125 mph but the curve is severe and trains must throttle down to 70mph. There were so many wrecks on that curve that we designed a new track sign (called a 'Morpeth board' after the curve they were designed for and trialled at). They are an upside down triangle with the speed restriction posted as a warning, a couple of miles ahead of the actual restriction. They are usually accompanied by an AWS / TPWS ramp set to a constant caution to alert the driver and requiring a reset so the driver has to 'acknowledge' that he has seen the warning and will react appropriately.

At 1:35 it states that the train was leaving Philadelphia next stop Trenton but stated earlier it was said the train was heading Boston to Washington so instead of Trenton being the next stop it would of been Wilmington instead it was going Washington to New York not Boston to Washington

Okay, but auto emergency braking would not have been much use as the crash happened anyway. The biggest problem was speed and no signal warning. In the UK, rail speed limits are clearly sign posted, speed reduction warnings are also clearly signposted. Some are backed up with AWS as a very basic system to give the driver a heads-up as they are about to pass them, the driver must acknowledge the warning by clearing the alarm within a couple of seconds. A critical approach would of course use TPWS to back it up. But its the signalling that confuses me. Surely the train can't pass a signal if the train ahead hasn't passed the signal ahead? We have fixed block signalling meaning a train must not enter the same area (block) as the preceding train. So much opportunity for error on the USA rail system...

In America which has a Lot more mileage of track than the UK its more expensive to do that and in areas outside of the NEC its freight company's that own the tracks and stations Amtrak just operates services and the stations

I am glad to see this told by someone who actually knows something about trains. At 3:42 you say "finally" help was on the way as if to imply there was a delay in response. Was there? I hadn't heard that. I wish you would have mentioned more about the response. The scene was so large and separated by wrecked cars that it had to be divided into two parts for command purposes. It was difficult for the commanders to gauge the enormity of the situation because they could not see the entire scene at once. Eventually they climbed up on a track crossing bridge. Also as usually happens in situations like this, people with no or minor injuries started walking away from the scene before being assessed or counted by responders. this makes it difficult to know if someone is still trapped in the debris. While train control might have prevented this so would a second person in the cab. In an airliner one person is flying and one person is communicating on the radio. Finally in times when there is increased engineer workload such as sharp turns, grade crossings and station stops they should adopt the "sterile cockpit" rule. Nothing should distract the engineer from operating the train and unless the radio is telling you to stop immediately you should be ignoring it.

9:32 I remeber this day like it was just yesterday. We pulled into Pennsylvania station and they opened the doors. I remember we were sitting there longer than usual and then they finally told us that a train in front of us hit a backhoe. Still to this day I cant believe that if I took the train before us, I would have been on that train.

In all these videos with crashing while going around curves and every single time someone dies, every single curves needs to be called "dead man's curve", and have a big sign a few miles away from there saying "Dead Man's Curve 1/2 miles ahead", or something. Have multiple signs of warning about closer approaching Dead Man's Curve. This way if a train operator is not for sure of passing a curve, there will be multiple signs to see before being too late.... If paying very close attention to finding a sign before being too late by already crashing.

I was in the third car as well and when we hit the curve I was chucked on the floor and when I went to school. It didn’t go well because when I hit the floor my lower jaw hit it hard and when I tried to say something I couldn’t and all what I was trying to say didn’t come out of my mouth only sounds and every one in my school was worried about but I wrote down a note for all of them to see and it said “don’t worry I will be fine and don’t tell anyone about this but the the reason why I have these bandages on is because of a train wreck worry about you and your loved ones especially me as well”.and 15 people died in my car sadly
