Fleabag said this season was a love story, and it was, the love between her and Claire was tremendous, and even more, she learned to love herself again
@RiverSlant11 сағат бұрын
Fleabag is a love story - of self love and sisterly love. As someone with a sibling - “the only person I’d run through an airport for is you” moves me to tears. The dad pointing out the similarities between Fleabag and her mum is such a nice callback to season 1 episode 1 where he says something similar which is meant as a dismissal of Fleabag’s genuine cry for help, but here it is meant sincerely and as a compliment- serves as a nice indicator for the growth of that relationship too. Even the “smiles and charm” line is one her father says to her after her mum died, which is a shoe in for all the feelings they have for each other but can never express because emotional constipation and britishness. Also, I’ve also wondered if the fox could represent the baggage from the Priest’s previous life, before he found the church, and it hints at his alcoholism and promiscuity and whatever else he struggled/struggles with, which is why it haunts him the way it does.

Oh I love that idea about the fox! It is the part of him that he is afraid still wants to scavenge for comfort in unsavoury, marginal places even as he strives for God's love, painfully alone.

Martin’s monologue was a genuine moment of honesty from him in my opinion . Up until this point, Martin has been painted as a largely one-dimensional antagonist-one of the few one dimensional "bad" people in the series (you can argue that boo is seen as a one-dimensional "good" person but this, in my opinion, is because she is seen through rose tinted flashbacks). His brief moment of honesty forces us to confront the layered uncomfortable reality that he’s a broken person trying, and failing, to love in a way that keeps people close rather than driving them away. It disrupts our moral certainty and humanises someone we’ve been conditioned to dislike. We are forced to empathise, even momentarily, with him. It's all part of the series' theme of flawed humanity (although, to be fair, he is still ultimately a douche bag in my humble opinion).

There are so many good shows, but this one is special. In 12 short episodes people become so attached and invested in these characters- that's incredibly rare to accomplish in literally 6 hours of content. Phoebe's writing and the acting of all of the characters is just incredible, and you can find yourself relating to these people even if you've never experienced the same situations as them. I love Fleabag, and although I wish the show was longer I loved the way it ended.

so i actually see the fox as a symbol of the priest’s life before going to faith. he says a few things to indicate that he has ghosts in his past that still haunt him. i think that’s why he’s always getting spooked thinking she’s a fox, and why she sees the actual fox and points after him but stays behind. the fox will never stop following him because it’s his past. and to the priest, fleabag is a similar temptation that he faced in the past before finding refuge in church. i also liked ur perspective on fleabag’s atheism being a factor in why it’s sad. as an agnostic myself, i’d never even considered that as a big deal that she’s letting him go for something she doesn’t believe in. but thats a great observation.

I think that is so beautifull to acknowledge love that you have for another person, and they have for you. And that nothing can come out of it, and that it is okay. I had this situation once. It feels so freeing in it's sadness, it's love, it's fullfillment. It captured it beautifully. Pheobe is a Poet. Period.

I’ve gotten so attached to fleabag so much I get sad when she says goodbye to us. I love a character who is so flawed we can’t help but love her despite her mistakes. I just wanted to comfort her

I love Fleabag's bittersweet ending. The priest saying, "It'll pass" is devastating and then him saying he loves Fleabag too is even more devastating. I love that PWB decided to end it there. Perfection. So glad you watched the show!

I believe her dad and the godmother really love each other. Love takes different shapes. Things that might be seen as scary in the other person, it can also keep you grounded. If that is what one needs.

Excellent 🎁 gift. Thank you for your insightful commentary on this series. I've seen the series nearly 20 times now, and you made me realize a few things still. It really is one of the best written series ever. You are doing a great job at this! And I look forward to seeing more content! Now that you’re finished with Fleabag, I have a few suggestions for smaller series with half-hour episodes: first of you can check out Phoebe’s earlier one-season show, “Crashing,” which isn’t as deep as Fleabag, but is a lot of fun and full of the similar memorable characters. Then you can check out a mind-blowing British show called “I May Destroy You.” I heard you mention “The Good Place.” Yes! Well worth watching. And also a Netflix show called “Dead to Me,” which is a thriller and absolutely hilarious but is also a show about mourning.

Frank, the closest program/movie that I can think of from the male side of Fleabag's plight is a Steven Soderbergh (written and directed), movie from 1989 [ before I give you the title, be aware that there are no gratuitis or major demonetizing scenes to get it blocked ] - "Sex, Lies and Videotape" - 1989 - No big production, a story, personal issue driven movie. Trivia from IMDB, with no spoilers: "The film was playing in Berlin's largest movie theaters when the Berlin Wall fell. A lot of East Germans crossing over to West Berlin went to see it, expecting Western-style porn." & "The film was inspired by Steven Soderbergh's own failed relationship. "I drove the most important woman in my life to leave because I didn't want to be in the relationship but couldn't just say, 'I don't want to be in this,'" Soderbergh told Film Comment. "So I was very deceptive about how I got out of it. And then once I was out of it, I couldn't even allow it the dignity to die properly. I kept stringing it out and not letting it go and then I got involved with some other people." After, Soderbergh was able to reconnect with that person; "We were able to be friends," he noted."

I hope that maybe you could convince Foxtaco to react to Fleabag! I think he might like it...but Fleabag is quite a niche fandom... There aren't a lot of us out there... So I'm not sure if we will be able to convince him ourselves to watch it. It's such an amazing experience though ... And he is so in tune with like the psychology of the characters in the shows that he's watching ....I think he would really really enjoy it!
