It's interesting that Frankie mentioned addiction at the end. I definitely have a tendency to overpsychologize societal problems, but addiction seems to me to be the best model to think about fossil fuels. We've known for a long time that they're killing us and we will have to give them up eventually, but we just can't bring ourselves to do so. So it goes.

@Novak Ingood Every cloud has a silver lining. I recently saw a guy being run over by a vehicle. It knocked him down, went over him, reversed back over him, then went forward over him, once more, before speeding off. Naturally, I ran over to help...myself to his wallet, as it was no longer of use to him. As I bent over him, rifling his pockets, he let out a final, dying gasp, which I interpreted as approval. You have to look for the positives in life. 😁

I think that if one accepts that one is not civilised, nor even particularly sophisticated, then one has a chance of attaining those lofty goals. It is the certainty that we're already there that is the problem. A corollary of that is that those whose views don't accord with ours necessarily are neither civilised nor sophisticated. And when one believes one is superior to others anything is possible.

@@AreMullets4AustraliansOnly That's not the point... to be sophisticated one must always believe that one is not sophisticated, or at least not more sophisticated than anyone else. As soon as one a) believes in one's own superiority; and b) is capable of forcing one's worldview on others, then one has a problem that is likely to end in bloodshed. So, it's not a question of seeking sophistication or anything else... it's what people do when they believe they're more sophisticated, morally superior, or oftentimes just capable of greater violence. The Conquista is a good example, and nothing has changed during subsequent centuries.
