Culture war my ass. Gervais is a good writer and actor and a shit stand up by the standards of the profession. Just a simple fact. Yeah, he's gotten tackier and more populist, but he never ever had the kind of edge, timing or depth that defines the Carlins, Lees, CKs or Pryors. In that 1 hour talk with Gervais, Louis CK, Chris Rock and Seinfeld ("Talkin Funny", is it?) it becomes glaringly obvious he's not one of them. These days he's just the thinking man's Jim Davidson.

I’ve loved Frankie’s comedy for years, best part of an already good show, Mock the Week, but I’m two and a half minutes into this and I haven’t laughed once. He’s run down Ricky Gervais, whose routines I have laughed at, and praised Hannah Gadsby’s comedy(?). Really!? I don’t want to join the “culture war” but it’s difficult not to when stuff like this keeps happening.

What about other 6 and a half minutes - how was that? I thought it got better tbf, and he got quite meta, talking about what makes comedy comedy. Or some of it anyway. You don't have to join in every culture war you're invited to btw. I think it's possible to enjoy both Gervais and Boyle, and appreciate that they are two very very different voices. It's all so subjective anyway. The difference for me is that Boyle (nowadays, at least) punches up, whereas Gervais only punches down. If making fun of minorities tickles your biscuits, then Gervais' stuff is for you, for sure

@@_fear5296 very good point about the difference in their styles of comedy, like night and day in some aspects. I enjoy both too. That doesn't mean I agree with either 100%, as I don't, and that's just fine.

If your gonna laugh at modern Gervais then your not gonna laugh at modern Frankie. The two are just incompatible these days. Can't imagine anyone who would be able to find both funny. Not everything is for everyone dude, just go listen to Gervais and be happy. Gervais is happy doing his reactionary stuff, Frankie is happy doing his progressive stuff.

@@mayhem492 i think most of those stand up and tell jokes "observational comedy" guys are just talking about issues that their particular audience finds uncontroversial. Imo they are still talking about current issue but the ideology of the audience blinds them to that. I have seen good standups that tell non-issue jokes (some great pun-standups for example), do characters, do physical and visual stuff, surrealists, etc. For some reason though it's seems to be only the boring observationalists and the "issues guys", both of which play to their audiences' lazy preconceptions, that get on TV and sell out arenas.... I wonder why....
