This is why I laugh when little kids here on YT go on about current songs “older” people are shocked by. It’s not age, it’s only whether or not you’re shocked. I loved Frankie Goes to Hollywood. My mother understood the lyrics when I was a kid, I didn’t, she also wasn’t fazed.

It's funny. Because as "an older person" I feel that the younger generation is more prude than we ever were. I see bodyparts blurred or intentionally covered in movies, series or videoclips that would have been shown in the seventies or eighties. And nobody would make a big deal out of it back then. It was there, it's normal, next.

Oh so true before this censorship cancel culture we live in now our songs were out there. Songs with sexual Things don't shock us because we had songs like Come feel the noise, Let me love you down, We had Tony Braxton's You're making me high And Relax. Before that there were songs like Stroke by the kinks
@nicoleb15813 жыл бұрын
@@willowb1527 oh stop it. Conservatives tried to cancel so much in the 80’s/90’s. They even made it in front of Congress with their pearl clutching and indignation. It was BS then & its BS now. Stop trying to reframe the talking point.. there were 3 versions of this video because it was censored. And tons of videos that weren’t allowed to air until after 10pm because of the cancel culture of the day. Duran Duran, Queen and many others’ videos were censored or restricted on broadcast tv. Queen was restricted because they dressed in drag in “I Want to Break Free”… and Stroke was Billy Squire

Yes, I think that this was the first video that got banned. Then they put out another one that featured scenes from the movie Body Double, in which it was featured... then it was also banned. The one that was usually shown featured lots of laser light and was relatively tame. Of course, anything, at this point, would be tame.

GREAT reaction. Loved watching as you figured out the sexual overtones of the song and you're right. The song is referencing exactly what you thought. This was one of the best "gay club" songs to come out during the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and it was one of the few club songs that talked about Safe Sex in the time of Aids. Thus the lyrics of "relax, don't do it, when you wanna come". It was such a huge and popular song though and with its hidden message about safe sex it was also one of the most political of its day.

This song went to #1 in England about three months (January 1983) after it's release and stayed in the top 40 there for nearly 40 weeks even after being banned from the air by the BBC. Their second big single 'Two Tribes' released in June 1984 and went to #1 and Relax climbed the charts again to #2. It was the only band to hold both #1 and #2 at the same time on the charts since The Beatles and John Lennon had done that. This record sold 2 million copies back then.

Realeased in 1983 and Mike Ried, a BBC Radio 1 DJ banned it from his play list. It was the biggest favour he could have done for FGTH, it went to number 1 in the charts and stayed there for weeks, it dropped off the charts after 48 weeks, (5 of those weeks at number1). It re-entered after 4 weeks keeping it in the charts for a total of 52 weeks.
@alexfletcher51923 жыл бұрын
The BBC famously 'declined' to play this single and therefore it was interpreted as a ban. Radio 1 DJ Mike Read, who presented the Top 40 countdown, was also the face of Saturday morning children's TV in the UK and - in a reflection of morals both then and now - couldn't reconcile playing this song with the job of hosting 'Saturday Superstore' the following week. It's a debate that still goes on today, but in acting on that impulse he gave the group credibility and turned 'Relax' (produced by Trevor Horn, using samples on the then cutting-edge Fairlight Synthesizer) and the band's follow-up releases into chart-topping singles in the UK - and beyond.
