You ever see Bowie's short "Jazzin' for Blue Jean"? Bowie's dork character Vic is looking for clothes to wear on his date with the hot chick, and he tries on that T-shirt and says, "Frankie Relax is definitely out. I'm not advertising Frankie until they tell us who he is!"

Was such a confused 16 year old when this came out . The "gay" theme didn't click, the come did but in all honesty it was just a banging dance tune . They courted controversy but "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" is still one of the best albums I've heard.

The 80's was the most adventurous and diverse era for rock music. It was probably the only period where you could get hard rock, metal, rnb, funk, disco, new wave, country, reggae, soft rock, hip hop/rap and pop songs all in the top ten on the charts at the same time.

Ha ha ha ha ha!! This song. 😂 It got banned by the BBC!! Their ad campaign for it didn’t help, featuring band members in leather, one with a sailor cap, and it had the caption “All the nice boys love sea men!” I think if they hadn’t been openly gay, they would have gotten away with it. Homophobia, though... The song was a big hit despite being banned, and the controversy probably made it more popular anyway!! So, along with more Frankie, please also check out Violent Femmes “Add It Up”!

God bless the freakin' 80s ❤️. We were all so blessed then to have naughty songs like this one. There was freedom of speech in music for the most part, as long as lyrics were tongue in cheek. We lost our minds with pure elation back in the day when this song would play. Big part of Gen X'ers childhood and / or teen years.

You're partly right, except these staunchly gay musicians aren't saying it from a girl's viewpoint! This song (and album) is a musical concoction by its legendary producer Trevor Horn, who was lead singer for the Buggles and producer of ABC, Grace Jones, Art of Noise, among others. The only band member to actually appear on the album is singer Holly Johnson. The rest is Trevor Horn's creativity at work.

Ahh, fond memories of all the uproar and the banning of the song and vid by the BBC back in the day. And of course, the fact that it was about gay sex was even more funny! We Brits may be more progressive about sex stuff in general than you guys across the pond, but the explicit level of this one just pushed the boundaries of the old crusties too far. All the uproar was HILARIOUS and only made many of us young 'uns more determined to find out what it was all about lol! It's funny too when you consider the sheer unadulterated sexist nonsense that was Benny Hill show (and others) that had been on our TV screen since the 70s! Another sex song of the 80s that was banned was I Want Your Sex by my man George Michael. Of course, like with Relax, any time music gets banned like that means it's guaranteed success because they create more hype for it!

Even though this song was banned in Britain, it still went to No. 1. Their 2nd song "Welcome to the Pleasure dome" also went to No. 1. I think it was the first time that any music group's first 2 singles went to No. 1 in Britain.

Yes it is a catchy song/ guilty pleasure - very homoerotic! When I was in my 20' s in the 1980' s when this came out I saw the original video from Britain, and this was not it- it was very raw, and homperotically hedonistic!!
