Their ad campaign for it didn’t help, featuring band members in leather, one with a sailor cap, and it had the caption “All the nice boys love sea men!” I think if they hadn’t been openly gay, they would have gotten away with it. You're partly right, except these staunchly gay musicians aren't saying it from a girl's viewpoint! Ahh, fond memories of all the uproar and the banning of the song and vid by the BBC back in the day. And of course, the fact that it was about gay sex was even more funny! We Brits may be more progressive about sex stuff in general than you guys across the pond, but the explicit level of this one just pushed the boundaries of the old crusties too far. All the uproar was HILARIOUS and only made many of us young 'uns more determined to find out what it was all about lol! It's funny too when you consider the sheer unadulterated sexist nonsense that was Benny Hill show (and others) that had been on our TV screen since the 70s! Another sex song of the 80s that was banned was I Want Your Sex by my man George Michael. Of course, like with Relax, any time music gets banned like that means it's guaranteed success because they create more hype for it!

Yes it is a catchy song/ guilty pleasure - very homoerotic! When I was in my 20' s in the 1980' s when this came out I saw the original video from Britain, and this was not it- it was very raw, and homperotically hedonistic!!

I've seen THAT video. Didn't look like anyone was relaxing!

This was banned in the 80’s and here in the uk we were gutted because it was such a massive song x

Doesn't matter what the lyrics mean, one of the best dance tunes with lots of energy. Pleasure Dome is epic must hear too!

Got banned in the UK only after it had already been played nationwide... And because it was banned it actually drew more attention.

This song was released in 1984, when the AIDS epidemic was just starting to go full steam and heteros realized they were at risk, too. We were still lost somewhere between 'party all the time' and 'too many friends are dying'
