One of the things about having silver in coins is that they are easily recognizable and, in a prepper situation, most people would know the worth of the coins, the amount of silver in them. If you melt it down, it is difficult to check whether or not you mixed another metal in with it or what amount of silver is there. I will keep any coins I find as coins, thank you.

We agree melting coins makes it harder in a prepper situation. People will feel more comfortable with old coins like Benjies, Mercs, etc. Melting silver that is worn to the point of being smooth maybe but it would be hard to trade even then becuase unlike bars you buy they have no grade weight or purity. Bars like Johnson Mathey and such would be good but just a blob of silver for most people they won't know what you have. JB

I will feel sorry for you if that ever happened because most people never knew that Ben Franklin was on a coin I think most people that collect 90% silver waiting for the zombie apocalypse will be very sadly mistaken when they find out that a 10 pounds of silver won't buy them a single Bean

It hurts me in my soul knowing folks are melting great quality silver coins, especially the older ones such as Morgan dollars.. I currently have one Benjamin and one walking liberty, they are not going anywhere.

There are double reverse half dollars out there, but my advice is take it to a local coin shop. They will let you know if it's genuine or not. Double obverse coins are all fake however, usually made as magician pieces.

NGC has certified a two reverse quarter and graded it MS63! I would trust them to look at it.

People arent melting Franklin half dollars. Theyre a known purity, weight, and brand - there is no reason to melt them. They trade by the bag. We melt culls but problem free coins in all grades are traded as is.

The U.S. mints have gone on record before saying it is impossible to end up with a 2 headed coin as the hammer die cannot be connected to the slot the anvil die connects too.
