The best part of this car is the interior by far. Just because being there you wont see that terribly ugly front. their goal isn t elegance and proportions, if they wanted they would have done a super graceful car, but i think they in purpose made the seven series look more heavy and "solid" , they call it "monolitic design" we can like it or not but it is a precise choice of their designers

You didn't mention the odd proportions due to the large frontal overhang. The nose grew by 10! cm which now gives the car the appearance of a front wheel driven vehicle. I personally think the overall shape of the car is nice. But that front end...just no. The grille is absolutely weirdly shaped and the headlight assembly makes it look like a cheap Korean crossover. It's not attractive at all. Especially because the grille is almost as high as its wide. I actually always liked the 2020 7 Series a lot and I hope more people will now appreciate how pretty it actually is compared to whatever this thing is supposed to be. I think the S-Class and A8 took a step back too, regarding their front design compared to their pre-face-lift versions. But compared to the new 7-Series they still come off as much more stately and elegant.

3:30 - it looks really good without top lamps. My personal impression on new BMWs is that they look unfinished - like somebody had an idea and then they just went for the design without making it final. I had some thoughts that they might want to stand out again - because since 2000' BMWs started to be more and more similar to other cars.
@Pandamasque
@Pandamasque 2 жыл бұрын
1. The car's tall and stately proportions are more akin to what you'd expect from a RR Phantom, not an "ultimate driving machine". Once you cut off everything above the lower headlights, as if their upper contour was the bonnet cut line, it almost looks good. Otherwise it's very double-decker-y. I'm assuming the plan is to place a big battery sandwich on the first floor, hence it's a 2-storey car. The amount of sheet metal above the wheels is quite telling. Gigantic wheels and those especially large lips around the wheel arch 9:13 are an attempt to hide tall the profile is. It's practically a truck. 2. The front cut lines are a bloody mess. In some photos even the paint colour between the bumper, hood and fenders looks like a different shade! I don't know, if it's due to the materials taking paint differently or the way their angles work with the light, but the result looks like a poor repair job. 3. The GiantArseGrill™ must go. KIA managed to pull off the conjoined nostrils well, because they were never tall. The BMW version looks like someone sat their fat arse on a photocopier and then drew some headlights on the resulting printout. 4. The lower rear is messy. Again, it's a desperate attempt to avoid the car looking as ridiculously tall as it really is.

Pretty much agreed with all of your remarks. Another commenter has stated that the car no longer symbolizes what defined previous BMW’s; elegance, sportiness and agility. I'm not quite sure what to think of it. It's an improvement over the lineup, but that honestly doesn't say much. The headlights feel as if someone paired a Citroen C4 Cactus with a 2010 Mustang. The rear isn't outrageously bad, just kinda soulless to the point where you could stick it on most large sedans without thinking it's not from that brand. I think the number plate placement might have been an aftertought if certain sizes would have given it a weird "smiley" face, because in this placement it might get dirty very fast, which is somewhat rare for german luxury cars. I'm glad you mentioned those lips on the wheel arches, it's a terrible trend IMO. Another small gripe I have on the sideview is, that the hood is higher than the side windows. The Hofmeisterknick does a good job at connecting the lines at the rear, but I really dislike the section around the side mirror where the windshield is placed higher than the side windows - further amplified by them connecting the chrome (?) by having the bottom go full length and the top coming on top of it, rather than having the top part going to the bottom itself. (Sorry for the weird wording). One last thing I dont understand about BMW's attempt at going with agressive front end looks: why not bring back sharknoses? The E9 was a stunning piece of art and their CLS Hommage looked great using those design cues. I wonder which "marketing analysis" came up with something saying people wouldn't buy those.

One thing I would like to say was that a major part of the bmw's design philosophy is that their cars look light and agile . I know that this is the top of the line flagship sedan and it should seem stately , and making the car look light and agile might take away from the "statelyness" of the car . But incorporating the stately presence with a light and agile look is what BMW is known for and have pulled of numerous times in the past , with most recent example of the 2011 7 series . Your analysis on the front was spot on. Removing those squinting lights up top and having the hidden lamps but still with the halo effect at night would have been perfect. Great point on the hidden popup noir. I liked how you showed it and simultaneously trimmed the grill. Did you see what happened though when you did that? It looks like a rolls. I don't know if there is a internal conflict in management that is forcing some of these design choices simply to differentiate between their mutual stake in rolls and bmw. Also, companies in general are pushing their grill graphics as the differentiator of their brand, as cars today don't have a lot differant about them, especially with lamps. Ironically bmw invented the "euro" style lamps (2 circles on each side) which after everyone copied, they started to get loud about their kidney grill.

What I like the most in this car is the proportions: it seems to me like Bmw is trying to approximate it to Rolls Royce, they might even planning on using the same platform for the next RR: this is just the assumption I get by the increased hight of the bonnet and boot line like we never seen on Bmw but is normal on RR's and its used to manipulate your prescription of the cars length at least in photos or videos.

This time I have to disagree - Of course I could never compete with you on a professional level as a designer, so you could always argue you were right anyway, but in the end the cars must hit the taste of the customers and also the fans, since the flagship represents the brand, also for the drivers of the lower positioned models. Being 42 now, and having been a true BMW supporter for more than 35 years, I just have to say that they've lost me completely now. Overall, the new 7 series looks bulky, not elegant at all. And it's about the shape, the size (almost 5,5 metres long!) and nearly all of the details. It fits perfectly next to this iX4 in my eyes. You made a very good point on that one, that it looks more like a furniture or a building, some other piece of design but not like a car, and that's my feeling with this 7 series as well. The front reminds me of a Jeep Cherokee or a Citroen, so you cannot even say it was a new approach - it's new for a luxury sedan, all others have put this strange face only on rather unconventional cars, where it fits much better, although it isn't nice on them either. The back is pretty much carried over from an Opel Insignia (latest generation). The interior is just overdone - this effect here, that eyecatcher there... and the design is just random, could be from any other manufacturer. It gives me a feeling of sitting in a living room of a super rich Russian: There is everything available what is and looks expensive, but it lacks any style and cosiness. This also summarizes my main problem with all new BMWs, but especially this new 7 series: Where has the style gone?

And he has the same belief, i had him as a teacher when bmw started to go downhill, wasted a lot of class time talking about it hahah. So sad to see an amazing brand try and emulate Lexus and Audi and merc, we like older BMWs because they aren’t mercs and Audis, they handle great, should be understated but pretty asf at the same time, bmw is successful because they aren’t merc or Audi, they are the true German sports sedan makers. Well the trend nowadays is “floating screens”. I highly doubt it was bad communication or a mistake, they especially tried to make as little connected to the dash as possible. The details look sharp in photos, but kinda clunky in person and the size is so much larger than what it looks in photos. The previous generation of the BMW Z4 too: I thought it looked boring in photos, but the surfacing was so well done that it jumped to 9+ for me in person. Great analysis! I find the front end is actually pretty nice and elegant. Taking the top headlights away would give it a over dimensional and heavy forehead sort of a look. I’m not a fan of the big grills when it comes to sedans. Especially how BMW has been doing it lately. The proportions are still too big. I agree. But if you put it in context to the Chinese market and to the other cars in the lineup it does fit in fine. But from a design perspective the proportions are a bit off. And that’s what this channel is about. I live in Munich so I’ve already seen one camouflaged driving around. Seeing it live on the road reminded me of the boxy looking Rolls Royce - at least from the vibes. Awesome Analysis as usual - keep it up, Mr. Stephenson!

Edit: The most important comment for me: TRY TO INTEGRATE THE SCREENS INTO THE DESIGN ELEMENT, and not let it be a stuck-on laptop screen! I was so surprised by how much better and 'authentic BMW' the car became when the crystal DRL was removed from the front of the car. Although I can understand the design about the placement of the license plate - there are countries that have absolutely FUGLY license plate design/color that will 100% break any car design element, and moving it to a visually less prominent position would minimize the damage the license plate will cause. I'm almost positive that most domestic Chinese car buyers will appreciate the placement of the rear plate.

Something BMW enthusiasts actually liked; the same great design concept, available in different sizes to suit individual needs or wants. Now when I look at the current Z4 vs the X//M, it feels like the design language does not stay consistent across the brand, in fact to me they feel quite different almost as if a different team designed them all together. Perhaps the should brighten the lower lamps bring it up flash to top and link to the grill. Those DRL can bring further up and hide under the bonnet line. It's so sad that BMW has the technology know how, yet the things that they are doing now is so Japanese of the 90s. One sentence conclude the BMW design today. The current 7 series is an amazing car, I enjoy looking at it, driving it, using the almost perfect infotainment system... It's just a beautiful, timeless car that the new one will never be. I comprehend your arguments about why the design "makes sense", but I still don't have positive feelings when looking at this new 7. One detail you didn't mention: I really don't understand this big chrome element at the C pillar, it looks just way too big and not elegant at all. And even if many comments praise the interior design, especially the infotainment system - I know from the iX that it simply doesn't work as smoothly as the old iDrive system does. All in all, it is a controversial, modern, cutting-edge-technology car, but it lacks the beauty and perfectness of the former 7.

Split headlights have made it worst in my opinion they should be the last thing a designer should take into account cause they are hard to nail right and just makes the front confusing I have always hated them from the first time I saw them on a Nissan juke I still think it's the ugliest car ever made I wish they would bring back modernised pop ups with today's tech like LEDs I think they can make them safety regulations passed now or atleast bring back headlight curtains they both made cars feel organic and alive

I don't think LEDs will help - sadly, having the lights pop up any distance at all from the surrounding bodywork isn't considered pedestrian-friendly.

@@aussiebloke609 what if they pop up from the back hinged forward I mean they can test it on the dummy honestly I don't think it's going to be unsafe for pedestrians automakers are just lazy that's all

The ugliest cars in history have split headlights, the Juke like you said and the Aztec.

@@abdullah_carart5638 You mean like the Porsche 928 and Lamborghini Muira? They'd still be considered a hazard these days, as they protrude from an otherwise relatively smooth hoodline. It's a shame, as forward-hinged is my favourite style of pop-up.

@@aussiebloke609 exactly those kind I mean if they somehow spring load then or something so that they fall backwards on impact but then pop up again it's not an hard engineer to do manufacturers just been real lazy and uninnovative and don't want to bother trying new things pop up's can be a great marketing tool to sell a car model nowadays people feel very nostalgic about them not to mention now we have motion sensors and stuff so the headlights can be programmed to automatically close on impact or before the impact in an accident

I think I might go as far as liking it, but I subconsciously cannot get over the headlights. Also, everytime I look at a front 3 quarter angle, it just reminds me a lot of a Rolls Royce (not a bad thing) but I think the squareness of the body, the headlights, and the way that the line comes up from the bottom on each side and curves in over the lower headlights section just feels to me very similar.
