Actually a whole life getting such level, but especially for this concerto I needed few months to learn it. I played both concertos by Liszt in one evening - this was one of the most challenging event in my life.

I have never been much of a Liszt person (excepting some of the tone poems) but this performance of the 2nd concerto, composed long after the mania years, lays out the stall (as it were) of the composer in mature prime. These musicians actually listen to each other and the work points to the future in so many ways. Yes, there are the usual fireworks but Liszt was clearly well on the way to a sort of concerto for orchestra with piano using the arch form used later by Ravel and Bartok as well as Prokofiev and many others. Sometimes a particular performance of superlative ensemble respect and affection can reveal the secrets of a great work. This is one such.

After listening to this splendid performance, and knowing when it was composed, it is clear to see why Liszt was the most advanced composer of his era. This one piano concerto alone offers more blood, passion, beauty, virtuosity and majestic grandeur than any other concerto in Liszt’s day or previously. It was ground-breaking and utterly sublime.

I listened to this driving along a rugged stretch of Hawaiian coastline last night in full moonlight. The repeating theme resonated with the variations of surf covered lava flows. Such emotion is never weary, an unapologetic force of nature. And, this performance captures the poetry of the great composer with stunning integrity.

Superb _authentic_ classical performance -- forcefully haunting and baroque, such as when Deine Lakaien did a performance with the Vienna Philharmonic. However, this 'classic classical' piano concerto lends even more of a Gothic chill to the air than 'modern classical' groups can perform.

Liszt didn't try to be Beethoven or anyone else, he surpassed them all as far as being a pioneer. Liszt was not just the leader of his own Romantic era, but laid the seeds for the future Impressionistic and Atonal schools of Debussy, Schoenberg and others. No one in music history was ever credited with being at the forefront of 3 schools of music. Liszt was unique. For more info google the Franz Liszt Site

Well put, and if I may add, those truly interested should read Prof. Alan Walkers three books. They will give you a 'window' into the over one thousand concerts that he gave through every haunt in Europe and Russia, over a seven year period, in order for those less fortunate that would never have the opportunity to go to concerts or hear the Masters from Bach to Chopin, including his compositions. Alan Walker spent over twenty years, following Franz Liszt life, from his barnstorming virtuosity, to his Weimar years when he took orders to be a Priest, and translation of over eight hundred works, including all Beethoven nine symphonies.

I have missed this concerto while my computer has been under repair. It is so dramatic, versatile, lyrical and beautiful. Beethoven's 4th and 5th piano concertos are close to to this one,in being massive and bold, but Listz is not Beethoven.
