Fraser Valley Rose Farm

Күн бұрын

I grow roses from cuttings for my small-scale backyard nursery, and I'd be happy to share what I've learned about propagation. Semi-hardwood cuttings under timed mist is my preferred method - and that's the one I'll describe here. I'm always tinkering with new techniques, so if you have any questions about general propagation, I'm happy to reply to comments left below the video.
This one is a bit longer than my usual videos (lots of details to go through), so here's a quick timeline:
00:00 Intro
01:07 Choose semi-hardwood sections
03:35 Cutting supplies
05:24 Leaf nodes (where to cut)
06:50 Rooting hormone
07:29 Stick the cutting
09:02 What about smaller cuttings?
011:02 Check for rooting
013:08 Misting
018:25 Humidity dome or tent instead
020:07 Timeline / up-potting
021:54 Am I allowed to propagate these roses?
If you find these videos useful, here are a few things you can do to help us out:

Do you send them to a nursery in Houston. Where and Under what name or serial # should I look for them. I greatly appreciate your answer Thank you

Thank you so much for this helpful video! It’s the most comprehensive and clear one I’ve seen. Hopefully my woeful record at propagating roses will improve with your technique. Meanwhile, my mother just cuts of a stem and sticks it in the ground where she wants it to grow and voila she gets her new rose plant! I’ve inherited her love of gardening but not her magical green thumb.

I just stuck a rooting hormone dipped, skinny cutting in peat/perlite in a skinny (but tall ) pot that fit a 2L clear club soda bottle perfectly… basically forgot about it over the winter -(as I did the cutting at the end of the season), occasionally watered it in a warm room, took the lid off the pop bottle If it was building up too much humidity and voila, this spring I had a root ball the size of my fist! I was surprised because it was such a scrawny stem to begin with, and was only semi hardwood. Mind you it took all winter! But I was thrilled to save a piece of my dying out David Austin rose and will now do a better job in spring. Thank you!

Hi Jason. I have to post a ‘thank you’. I followed your semi hardwood cutting regimen. Success! Evidence of leafing out in 46 of 52 cuttings. All cold Hardy, Explorer and Morden roses. We have a much later ‘spring’ here in southern Alberta than the Fraser Valley. Our air is drier than your region and no evidence of any blackening stems.. Cuttings were kept in a unheated garage. Temp. Between O to 5c most of the winter. I gave them a drink about once a month. Again much appreciated. An aside: I went through military officer’s training in Chilliwack years ago: fond memories of the Nature.
