I do have about 20 + Roses in big Containers, since I rent, I’d take my Roses wherever I move to, and they are doing FABULOUS. I have: Larger Than Life Roses, Simplicity Volet, Don Juan, Mr. Lincoln, Lagerfeld, JFKennedy, Life Of The Party, Givenchy, Queen Elizabeth, Savannah, Kiss Me Kate, Earth Angel and 3 others I don’t remember now. I live in zone 8

Amazing that I'm still learning so many things I thought I knew it all . Lol 😂 . I have a tendency to keep plants I love most in pots cause I think I will lose them once in the ground . Crazy yes. You just allowed me to leave them in pots but remove the bottom . Helps my anxiety over moving and losing them . 😂

The best rose I have ever grown = Margaret Merrill. Large white flowers, full of petals, amazing fragrance, disease resistant, repeat flowering. Long flowering period. Joy!

Just broke out my container roses from the back of the garage. They are all budding out: 3 Perle D'or, 3 Bliss Parfuma, an At Last and an Enfant de France. Batting 100%. I watered them all just a bit at the beginning of each month. And all of my roses in the ground made it. This is the first time for me that every single rose came through. Whoo hoo!

I had to laugh when I saw the topic. I literally just put all of my potted roses in the ground.😂🤣 Seeing how my property is basically all lava rock, I had to test dig all of the low lying areas to see if there was deep enough soil to accommodate the roses, I now have 9. They are much happier up here in the higher elevation and cooler temperatures. They actually went through a short dormancy and are now starting to bud out in leaves. I added a lavender Angel Face to the mix for color and the interesting serrated pedal edges. The soil I do have isn't very deep, so it will probably be more like growing in pots still. At least the roots can spread out and I can always add soil and mound it up if needed. The temperature sensitivity and watering needs are probably the most important to be mindful of because the entire growing area is the pot. Because I have so much wind up here it is necessary to have a surface covering around all my plants or they will dry out in a couple of hours (even 35 gallon pots). For people who live in areas that don't have a lot of wind or perhaps get more rain and moisture, they might want to add additional aggregate to allow the additional moisture to drain more quickly. Growing in pots requires a bit more attention to the needs of your plants on more frequent basis because the growing space is restricted to the size of the pot. Have a great Sunday Jason.🤙

Thanks. 'Angel Face' is wonderful for fragrance (at least my nose, in my own garden). I can imagine that roses will do wonderfully with the higher altitudes - I'm told that the farms in higher regions of Columbia are some of the most productive in the world for cut roses.

I grew a floribunda called "Lagerfeld" in a container when I lived in Portland and it did really well. As I recall, it had a compact growth habit with silvery lavender petals and a mild fragrance.

Yes to Little White Pet. Also Perle d'or, Bliss Parfuma, Pillow Fight and Earth Angel. I have grown these in containers for years. I am in a cold zone so I roll them to the back of my garage, cover them with quilts from a thrift store and give them a few ounces of water once a month.

I have a Belinda’s Dream in a 21” pot that I got last yr. I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and she over wintered in our garage when we had cold snaps. She’s done really well, and I just pruned her along with my other roses and applied horticultural oil to all. I have two more 21” pots that I’m planning on putting more rose standards in very soon so this video was extremely helpful! 🥰🌹

Thank you for another fabulous video! I have several DA roses in pots, because I am in zone 4a; I am lucky enough to have an above-ground root cellar where I put them for the winter. In my pots I have Abraham Darby, Heritage, St Swithun, Tess of the D'Urbevilles, Othello, Bathsheba, Wollerton Old Hall (big pot). They are all in 21 inch pots (except the Old Hall, who is in a half barrel) and they do really well! The real reason I am commenting though is that I was lucky enough to pick up a Jalbert Dragon Heart (or Dragon Blood - I can never remember, since I lost the label and it isn't anywhere on the internet, not even Help Me Find) The Dragon Heart is an outstanding container rose: very floriferous, never stops blooming, gorgeous flowers and foliage. The only downside is no fragrance :( Here it is - and now I have to go and re-watch your video of the Summerland garden, because it is mentioned there :) Shoot! Can't copy a picture in the comments!

Jubileee Celebration is so gorgeous. I have a pot, she is doing well in our suddenly blistering hot weather, so is Desdemona. Ingenous Mr Fairchild however can't cope, she is in shade and just starting to grow new buds and leaves. A Japanese hybrid rose, Gabriel, sweet fragrance, palest purple fade to white and last over a week also soldiers the barely berable temperature well. Calcutta 300, lovely pink with white stripe, outstanding fragrance growing well in pot, unlike its near lookalike, Vick's Caprice, but at least now Vick's buds are growing instead of just burnt to crisp. My greatest headache is Jeri Jennings. She is doing well in pot but when i water it the leaves turn yellow and drop off, every single time. At first i had her in full sun. Now she is in the shade. She seemed unfazed by the high temperature but because i only water the roses when the soil dry, i don't want to risk it wilted while i am not paying attention, so into the shade it goes. Even when the leaves droop, the soil dry, 24 hours after i water it, some leaves turn yellow. The canes remain green and healthy, no rot or dieback. Weird

When i was a school girl.. i used to pass by a front garden with grandpa Dixon rose .. giant leaved with open hands size gigantic yellow flower.. i used to be bowled over by the bigness of it in 70’s.. i realised then at 12 that i seem to have a craze for roses .. i had that one at my London house.. then saw it last yr. selling at wyewale nursery.. but i bought roushet de something.. the dark pink fragrance one

All of my roses are currently in pots. My two DA are ancient Mariner and Roald Dahl. RD is very good for pots but since all my pots are big 20-30 gallons really any rose can do ok in them for sometime

I think that as long as you are prepared to go above and beyond tending container roses, it’s possible to grow lovely blooms. I check my pots every single day and they are pampered. I’m retired though, so I have the time.

Not really a recommendation but I picked up a Petite Knock Out on clearance last fall that I've got in a container. It was pretty ratty looking and isn't in a very pleasing shape, but it's already started growing like crazy with buds forming.

Desdemona from david austin blooms prolifically in clusters in my 20x20 pot, amazing rose. Roald Dahl is also Excellent in a pot and blooms a lot, also havnt had any black spot or problems at all with roald in 2 years, just a bullet proof rose over all.

Hi Jason, another great video. Because I have a house which comes with my job and I move on average every 5 years I have a number of roses in pots, I do have a few in the garden too ( still wondering whether to take these when I move in a few months) I do try and make sure I feel and give extra care to the roses in containers, but I don't feel they do as well as the ones in the garden. A couple of years ago I put 2 rose plants of the same verierty in the same container, thinking that I would get a fantastic display, but neither plant has done very well so I think that now (after watching your video) I will move them both into new separate pots. I have been looking for the best coffee/apricot rose, do you have any suggestions please ?? 🤔 How is the Chapel building coming along?

@Pauline Crispin Considering that you move fairly often, re-potting with fresh soil and thinning the roots of your roses is probably going to give them the best environment to grow in. Also, depending on how large th base of your roses are, you may need to divide them, but that would be an area to discuss with Jason to hear his thoughts on the varieties of roses you have. I re-pot my plants every three years and keep them pruned fairly small so they have a bit more soil than size, it keeps them much healthier all around and it the usually require less attention overall. 🤙

Yes, exactly. It's a measure of the expected lowest temperatures the plant will tolerate in the garden.

I’m planning on getting a tall climbing rose this year but I’m a bit worried it will be a difficult spot for it. That's a pretty good plan. It gives you the flexibility to adjust the height or position while it's growing the height you want, and the extra year of root growth will be helpful too before getting it in the ground.

I have binge watched this channel. I would be interested to know if you have any Himalayan wild roses. I am from India and I have sometimes spotted a few rose like plants on hikes. They had no flowers and only thorns. Big thorns, small thorns, tiny hair like thorns, stem full of thorns and thorns even on the back of the leaves. Have always wondered if a wild rose could grow in shade of Deodar trees at 2500 meters above sea level. ?

I bought a 1 gallon Bolero on its own root and planted in my zone 8A backyard last Spring. It performed the best among the 21 1st year roses I have - vigorous, extremely floriferous, disease free, exceptionally fragrant and surprisingly, not a favorite of the Japanese beetles. I was confused when seeing comments on the Internet that Bolero is susceptible to powdery mildew, or does not bloom much in other people’s yards. I wonder what may cause the difference - local climate? Grafted vs. own root? Full sun vs. partial sun? Soil conditions?

I love the Summerland Ornamental Garden, I've been a few times since I don't live far. Does it matter if the container is plastic, clay, or ceramic? Also, do you have all of those roses for sale, I am heading down in late Spring, depending on the weather condition on the Coquihalla, lol, and would like to take a look at some of them? Hi Jason, love your list of roses! I have 'The Fairy' rose and the tag said it will grow only to 2' and that's how tall it is in my garden. Prolific bloomer of soft pink flowers. Should it grow taller? I would love to get my hands on a Maurice Utrillo and the Cinco de Mayo. They look so bright and vibrant!

Pretty much all of info on cultivars is freely available at www.helpmefind.com - it's like a Wikipedia of roses. Search the name of the cultivar and it will summarize everything from growing size to bloom form/color, fragrance etc. It also usually lists the patent or release date(s) at the bottom of the page. The patents expire after 20 years, so it's really easy. The cultivars aren't grown from seed - usually they're produced by cuttings or grafting from mother plants.

Jason, I need help!! I have several rose bushes. I buy mostly from a place close to my house, Antique Rose Emporium, but I purchased a 6drift rose brushes last year. One of them has crown gall. It is next to a Tyler rose ( from here in Texas) how do I remove it... Or possibly cure it?.. Never had this issue ever... Rose Mama for 6 years.

I was wondering if you (or anyone out there) has any ideas. I planted a healthy Rio de Samba rose about a month ago. It got plagued with aphids. I sprayed it with water a few times to knock them off, but never got round to doing more. The roses next to it are doing great. But starting a week or so ago, the center of the leaves turn kinda brown, then the whole (once dark green) leaf turns yellowish, and withers up and falls off. The healthy leaves still have brown in the center. I don't know what to do. I am fertilizing, and trying to water just the roots as well. But I have no idea what else to do. Everything I look up says "blackspot", but there aren't spots, its kind of a browning center along the middle. Like a smudge of brown paint, like brown blush. I thought it was sunburn at first, but it seems to be universally on the leaves. My browning is coming from the center, a dark smudge blending with no clear line between that and the rest of the leaf, it fades out to the healthy green. The brown looks superimposed on top of a healthy green leaf, but its dark brown. Its on all of them. I live in Mesa AZ (98 degrees today), so its so hot and dry, I doubt its mold. I usually always water the roots, just sprayed a few times because of the aphids. Any tips at all would be deeply appreciated

Well I obviously can't diagnose from here, but I don't mind throwing in my .02 cents. Are you pretty confident in your fertilizer levels and that they're not too high. I've sometimes seen symptoms of high excess fertilizer and root die-back similar to what you're describing. Kind of an "off" olive type color to the foliage followed by rapid defoliation. That's certainly not the only thing it could be - a major stress to the roots could have similar symptoms with dissimilar causes.

Not generally. Aside from being a bit large for the treatment, centifolias are also once-blooming, making them less interesting as a potted plant.

It depends on the size of the container. A larger shrub or climber has higher demands for water and nutrients, and it can be hard to keep up with a smaller soil volume.

Great list of roses! I love the scented floribunda roses! I had two Julia Child for years and love them. This year I thought I’ll prune a bit more aggressively to get some new growth. Well, I lost the one as I think I pruned to early (December) 🥲 Need to find me another one. They are easy to take care of. I like them in pots better. Never had much luck with roses on the ground but the ones in pots always looked good!
