@@joncarroll2040 🍀The writers were great at having each script allow this amazing cast to display their outstanding talents. The show where Clive comes to visit Daphne is a perfect example of that. Lies are flying as everyone presents D & N as a married couple, and Roz (in hot pursuit of Clive) suggests Daphne is pregnant, D suggests R is barren(sp.), Niles says it's not her fault...Frazier (her "husband") is impotent. Frazier's physical response to the whole scene is pure genius? Icing on the cake!! Sorry for the long comment. Tried but couldn't make it any shorter.

This is one of my all-time favorite episodes. I especially like how Daphne walks into the kitchen signing and asks Mel. Do you know what that song is about? And she goes Bloody Mary. She answers "Don't mind if I do" and then when Niles says: "I just wish that one of you could have come up with something nice to say about her" Everyone is silent and all of a sudden Daphne goes: "She does have x-ray vision" To this day a still laugh out loud.

Even though all of them were spot-on with how they felt about Dr. Karnofsky, Niles was absolutely right telling them off. For a short moment at time, Niles WAS actually happy to be with her, considering his fairly recent divorcing Maris. His breakup was a painful one, considering the way he was treated during their marriage and their divorce proceedings. And then to meet Mel and hit it off with her? Of course he was smitten with her. She made him happy. And for all her faults, we have to give her that. She deserves the credit. And for them not to even recognise that happiness but instead focussing on her flaws, that must’ve stung. Especially considering his family and friends should have recognised Niles being happy. Even without him being in a relationship with Daphne. Was the marriage bound to fail? Well, of course it was! Because neither Mel, nor Maris for that matter, could’ve given him what Daphne did. But at that articular moment his heart belonged at least in some part to Mel.
@CzechMirco
@CzechMirco Жыл бұрын
The earlier he knew the truth the less painful the consequences. Had he at least paused to think about what they said and perhaps taken things more slowly and not eloped like a teenager, he wouldn't have to go through the painful and humiliating charade of their subsequent orchestrated "breakup". But ofc thats the contemporary Anglosphere all over again: "what you feel right now is always 100% right and damn the consequences, damn the whole world".
@arnold8002
@arnold8002 Жыл бұрын
@CzechMirco True as that may be, we have to sympathise with Niles, here. He was obviously smitten with Mel. And as much as she had her flaws, which everyone could see, I maintain he was seeing her through these rose-colored glasses as I’m sure all of us would, if we were recently in love. Yes, he jumped into this relationship like a teenager on a hormone boost. And yes, he was clearly on the rebound with Mel. But he found in her something that mimicked his traits and I have to assume that’s what attracted him in her. And let’s not forget Mel was far more supportive of him than Maris would’ve ever been. She acknowledged his traits. They noticed their similarities. And yes… Mel played him like a fiddle to become cork master, but she did encourage him to want bigger things for himself. If you were married to an unsupportive spouse and then met this woman with all these traits you had too. And she was actually also supportive in letting you be you and more, why would you not be so smitten to this new person in your life?
@CzechMirco
@CzechMirco Жыл бұрын
@@arnold8002 I don't blame him for being smitten and oblivious to very clear signals. One of the main premises of this show is that while Frasier and Niles are accomplished professionals, they are very oblivious and helpless when it comes to their own personal problems, the classical "shoemaker's wife walks barefoot" situation. What I am disputing is his right to tell them off. The reasons they were right to point out Mel's shorcomings I already described in my previous comment. Now I will only add that Niles should at least recognize, that if such diverse group of people (Martin, Frasier, Daphne, Roz) all hate Mel, its probably not some kind of conspiracy or plot or some frivolous malicious pettiness on their part, i.e. that the fault lies not with them, but actually with Mel. I.e. as a psychiatrist he should have recognized that they are in this case the objective uninvested and impartial party and that their concerns shouldn't be readily dismissed. A few seasons later Fraiser actually had to take Niles through an informal psychiatric session tackling exactly the same problem (NIles' smitten clouded judgement) only this time concerning Daphne.

Mel was very similar to Maris in every way, it was scary. You'd have thought that Niles would have learned his lesson and not go out and find another woman who was basically a clone to his ex-wife. Having said this, Niles had no business marrying Mel no matter how heartbroken he was over Daphne marrying Donny. He should have been upfront to Daphne about his feelings for her before she and Donny got to the point of even getting engaged. The worst that could have happened was she would tell him she only considered him a friend, at least he would have known where he stood with her. Then again, maybe she would have realized she cared for Niles more than she realized, would have let down Donny gently, and she and Niles could have gotten their relationship off and running without hurting anyone else.

Markle reminds me of Mel. The marriage of Niles and Mel reminds me of H and M's marriage. Faked to save face. In the show, Niles married Mel but immediately (on the wedding day) realized he loved Daphne all along. Mel told him he would have to pretend they were happily married for a while to save face in front of their family and friends. So they held hands, acted lovey dovey when they went out to pretend they were in love just like H and M do. Life imitates art.

You know, in hindsight I don't like how they dealt with Mel. They really tried to make her unlikeable so that nobody would have any qualms about Daphne and Niles getting together later. Bad enough that poor Donny gets his heart broken for no reason, but they just had to make Mel into a cartoon villain so that even her grief comes secondary to Niles and Daphne's happiness.

@@kendallrivers1119yes, sexism. Do you you not the definition of the word? Because both Frasier's statement and your's a great example of it, sweet heart. And next time you don't like someone and whether it's for a "good reason" or not, you let us know whether or not you find yourself being unreasonable or anyone else thinks are.

Martin said that they were about to have breakfast, meaning that this is still the morning. What were they doing getting drunk at that time of day?

Mel says 'Thank you all for a lovely afternoon'. So they must have waited a long time for breakfast. Besides, who has company over for breakfast?

@@rockys201 You raise a good point. Bloody Marys are often served at brunches, which usually take place in the late morning or early afternoon. It seems like a "mistake" that either no one noticed in the script, or an actor misspoke their line (perhaps the actress playing Mel was supposed to say this really has been a lovely morning, or John Mahony as Martin Crane was supposed to say now we can eat our brunch/lunch.)
