They would if they knew that Americans’s call (association) football soccer and were considerate enough to avoid possibly confusing their Yank friends/family. It think many Brits know that Yanks/Americans call (association) football soccer in the U.S. so when visiting over here they would use the term soccer. I use the term football when speaking to exclusively to Brits about soccer and soccer when speaking to other Americans. I’m conscious of terms that differ between British and American English such lift/elevator, boot/trunk, nappy/diaper, zee/zed, take-away/take-out, etc. and I’m sure a good number of Brits are equally aware of the different terms in UK and US english too. Now even if the type of British characters in this show would not have considered the different terms used for association football/soccer in the UK vs US in real life, they can use artistic license to have them do so on the show for the convenience for American audiences.

Making an excuse for the character in world now: Could be that he probably knew that Niles is not much of a sportsfan (go figure) and was just trying to make it easier for Niles to understand. Yeah, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. Or you know, it could just be that the script was written by Americans but I think my excuse works better.

I've heard plenty of English folks call it 'soccer', even in England. Look it up, there's clips of Brian Clough and Alf Ramsey using the term. I get it's an easy way to get snitty at Americans, but the fact is the English invented it, used it and didn't care if anyone else did.

In the '60s and '70s, most of the media covering the sport in the UK called it 'soccer'. By the 80s, everyone started having conniptions and insisting on calling it 'football'. The Brits think Americans invented the word. Americans know better.
