"Frat Rap": Hip Hop's Most Hated Subgenre

First impressions are everything. And in hip-hop, your entry into the game can haunt you forever. When it comes to white rappers in hip-hop, the only way for them to be accepted is to differentiate themselves either through their music or personality. Take Eminem for example, his combination of blistering rhymes and showmanship made it easy for audiences to accept him as a unique commodity, while for New York’s El-P, he was such and outsider in both his sound and subject matter that he was undeniable.
In today’s landscape, Post Malone has gotten by on a melodic flow that peers deep into his fan’s soul, while making beer pong and Marlboros into his public image. But where that love of partying is exhibited in his life and live performances, it doesn’t define his music. But long before White Iverson hit airwaves, there was a genre that solely relied on the beer-fuelled experiences of young caucasian males such as Post.. It was known as frat rap and now, you’d be hard pushed to find a movement in hip-hop that was as hated.

Frat Rap is pretty cringe, but Mac Miller is the perfect example of how one of these typea dudes can easily grow into something unique and special. I’m not gonna lie, I always fucked with Mac Miller even early on when he was seen as the epitome of frat boy rap. He’s always made good music. Mac evolved past frat rap and even past rap. He was a real musician and a pure soul. EDIT: SAYING MAC WAS A REAL MUSICIAN DOES *NOT* MEAN RAPPERS AREN'T MUSICIANS, THAT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE AND IS NOT A STATEMENT I'M MAKING. LEARN TO READ. Also: if you only know how to sing/rap and don't play any instruments or produce, you're hardly a musician. You're a writer, a singer, a performer etc but you can't play or make music. Honestly although Mac Miller's early music was categorized as "frat rap", he blossomed into an incredibly talented and humble artist and you can hear it, too. He got the respect he deserved by the time he released Swimming, in my opinion. really cool video. when i first found out about mac miller, when he was just starting to make music, i didnt like it at all, and definitely wrote him off as corny like all those other frat rap guys, but when red dot music came out around the time i was a teenager, i definitely had a new respect for him and enjoyed his music, i think the only thing that made mac different from the other guys was his actual respect and appreciation for rap music, even going back to listen some of those songs he had released early in his career, you can still see that he still has a respect for the genre and definitely doesnt try too hard to do anything super different from the norm. also i wish mgk would stop talking like he has any authority in rap music when he's just as corny as all the other frat rap guys making music.

I feel like art is about portraying your experiences and truth through creativity, I think people forget sometimes that hip hop is 100% a form of art. It's sad that the genre is still about pretending to be someone you're not

@Mister Happy Why can't a white person rap about their own life regardless of if they've had a hard or easy one? I mean there are tons of black rappers that rap about their luxurious life as well. I don't see how this hurts the genre honestly especially when most of the rappers mentioned in the video aside from a few like Eminem, Mac Miller and maybe Machine Gun Kelly aren't even that relevant. I think there's enough room for multiple different kinds of rap music and I don't really think race should matter I just care about the quality of the music.
@PeterGriffin11
@PeterGriffin11 2 жыл бұрын
@Mister Happy Not all black people are poor or need to deal with racism on a daily basis and not all white people are rich with flawless lives I wouldn't assume what someone's life is like strictly because of their race. As for race when it comes to music in general the race of the person doesn't matter to me rap and hip hop may have comes from African Americans but I don't think that means only African Americans can make music in the genre I think it should be open for anyone to make music in it like any other music genre I can think of. I don't know what Rock N Roll has to do with this but I don't listen to it. I don't have much else to say on this topic so we can agree to disagree.

@@PeterGriffin11 it's really about race to some people, they are white people that live in the ghettos and have a struggle life, they are also black rappers that never lived in the hood and now are rapping about the hood ..hip hop is really brainwashing kids into pretending to be some tough gangster. Glorifying the hood instead of understanding the means.

My favorite artists are Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Chili Peppers, Incubus, NIN, Weezer, etc. I like to think I have good taste in music. Frat rap is just pop, with the added element that encapsulates the college experience. Just enjoy it for what it is.

The frat rap discussion is always a weird one. So hip hop made it clear they hate White boys rapping about partying and their suburban upbringing. That's understandable since hip hop was built off the struggles of Black men. But the rise of trap in the later half of the 2010s has led to White kids to rap about typical hip hop subjects and reject the frat rap image of partying and being middle class. This is also hated in hip hop, because of the lack of authenticity. So which will it be? Are we gonna hate White rappers who are *technically* keeping it real, or are we gonna hate White rappers who are regurgitating what their non-White counterparts are rapping about?
