After the scandal at CGC happened. I reached out to both CGC and CBCS for comment. CGC passed my message onto Matt Nelson who never responded, but CBCS did. I've been working with them for the past 3 weeks to get this interview together and have our schedules work. Here is that interview.

CBCS has entertained the thought of taking pictures of books a few years ago? Man, these grading companies are way behind the technology curve. Both CGC and CBCS should have high resolution scans and copious grading notes on every single book being graded.

They are multi million dollar companies. There is no excuse not to. If you're grading books that cost thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars, this should be a no brainer. Charge more for the cases, I'm sure most customers would pay a little extra. I surely would to have peace of mind.@@leveragecomics5067

Weird responses at times from the CBCS people. Essentially making excuses for why they won’t improve their security processes. I give them an A- for their project of starting a business. I give them a D for the section of responding to and seeking better security measures.

Great job Dave! I just hope CBCS doesn’t send the guy on the right out for any public relations work! He made a comment near the end that was terrible, something like “We don’t try to crack our cases so we wouldn’t know what that looks like..” WHAT!!?? You need to know what a tampered case looks like and your R&D department should be tampering and testing to improve security! SMH…

I'm stunned at the apparent lack of concern these guys seem to have about an avenue of scamming that is sure to be a bigger issue than it currently appears. The entire purpose of slabbing a book is to ensure it is what it purports to be. "Just be observant," coming from a "guarantee company" is infuriating. That's what I'm paying them to do! If the comic book guarantee companies don't try to keep up with technology and strive to stay one step ahead of the fraudsters, then of what use are they to collectors?! These guys' apparent apathy ("we're not trying to break into our own cases") and total lack of interest in improving their product is concerning.

Im a big fan of CBCS new cases ! Their slabs are superior to CGC in construction and design. Ive bought hundreds of CGC grade comics over the years in the mail. I can tell you I say a prayer every time I open the packaging to a CGC slab hoping for no damage within the slab it self. Ive encountered numerous CGC slabs with "Shaken Syndrome" over the years. Receiving one of them is not fun. CBCS inner well does a superior job in holding the book in place preventing shaken syndrome. As far as security is concerned, I've noticed CBCS cases splinter when cracking them which would make it a hard task to try and counterfeit one. In time the quality of CBCS cases will put them on equal footing with CGC.

That's what I was thinking as well. One guy looked like this interview interrupted his back yard to wood chopping plans. Should have dressed up a bit representing a company that has millions in annual revenue. High tech companies have hack-a-thons where they invite hackers to try and find weaknesses in their product and offer rewards if a hacker finds any exploits. Dave's idea was sound. But the response was "well we don't want to invite..." WHAT!!?? That's exactly why you have those types events. You don't know what you don't know until you offer a reward for somebody to find a weakness that you can then address when it is identified.

Good line of questions but they basically said that they're not going to change anything or think they need to balanced against the cost it would entail. To change a case even a little would involve a new die/mould and those are extremely expensive to design and make and they probably have to order a half million cases at a time or something crazy like that to get the cost/case down so they're probably sitting on a huge inventory of them. They skirted around questions and solutions knowing the time, effort, and expenses involved which none of us would know but them. But, I know any little addition to a system repeated tens of thousands of times isn't a small endeavor. The one solution that came up would be to just do something extra for those books worth over a certain amount where a tampering effort would pay off for anyone thinking about doing it. Maybe instead of a different case, just do that inner sleeve serial number on those books. They wouldn't have to change the case but just add that extra step to books that might be worth $1000+ maybe and just charge another $5 for those? That was a great idea to add something to their site with a description of potential hacks to the cases but their excuse not to was pretty weak. One reason was that there's always new hacks but that website description could be updated in a half hour. Their reason not to was coming from a standpoint that once they put something up, there was no way to change/update it.

This touches on the comment that a lot of people make, that CBCS couldn't handle CGC's volume if they were to receive it. Great video Dave! Brilliant questions that we want to know the answers to! Ive collected thousands of comics for over 38 years only purchasing raw books (quite a few from you as well). Ive worked at a bank here in Canada for over 17 years and seeing tbe anticounterfeit measures by the government on canadian bills, I've always felt slabbing companies have needed to use better tech to ensure cases arent tampered with. CBCS saying they have new labels with hidden markers is a good start. Even better was your suggestion of having a label or hologram or etching along the edge of the slab as a marker to show tampering. I believe also having a thin line of blue ink with a few particular ink breaks in it running along the inside edges of the slab that when opened up the ink will run (not on the comic as its contained in a clear bag inside) making it really difficult for the fraudster to reseal the slab with the same plastic case with the same blue ink with the ink breaks as the slab pic online. Having photos of each slab with the blue ink breaks, with the ID # and when slabbed and each time reholdered is imprtant for us buyers to varify no one has tampered with it. Im positive people will pay for the added security even i would start buying slabs with the increased slabbing costs of this new ink process

Please offer the 'fort knox' case in the future fellas! My twin brother and I discussed this in the past for high value books, and we would pay quite a bit more for a tamper proof case...and also a vacuum sealed case to abate staple rust...and also a 100% UV rated case! Even if these cases were 'outer' cases with the current case inside the 'outer' case, I think it would be a great option for very high value books. I could even see people shipping and selling with these 'outer' cases on, and then some collectors cracking them out to display for a few years, then re-submitting to put back into a 'tamper proof' case, before sending in to auction again...money maker, in my opinion. Just my two cents.

The real problem that you need to overcome if your CBCS is to get the trust of the community, but you also have to remember that there’s millions of books that big dealers & the rest of the niche slab community have that are all CGC graded. You’re not going to take that away. Every book that’s worth anything is generally a CGC graded book anymore.

Nelson is a corp shill - he did one softball interview with west coast & 9.9 - gaslighted, outright lied and then threw out a 9.9 prescreen possibility. Nothing on new slabs, the under count of messed books nor poor QA/QC. Who needs that?

Great video. But yeesh - these guys don't get it. "Do your due diligence... but we won't describe what to look for, because we don't want' to put ourselves in the minds of the scammers". Laughable and lame deflection. BTW - when he asked you the question near the end, that wasn't conversation they were trying to engage you in... that was him trying to put you on the spot - nice that you didn't fall for it. That one statement shows the true nature of the people in this profession. They take no accountability and want to place responsibility for the integrity of their product onto their customers. They said "Be aware" - I think they need to be self-aware. "Do your due diligence? Really - I would like to know how. Basically, if the case has a crack of any kind, then walk away is the real answer since collectors and dealers can't tell a crack from being dropped vs. one that's been cracked, and the book switched. That leads me to conclude that it's nuts to buy high-dollar CBCS or CGC slabbed books until the next generation of slabs comes out.

The fact that a 9.8 from CGC is worth more than a 9.8 from CBCS is ridiculous. But i like CBCS and there cases if i was going to buy slabs id buy from them. That being said i think if slabs came in different colors or had cool impressions on them I'd be more inclined to buy them so i could create my own slabbed PC.

Here's what I think may be going on with both both CGC and CBCS. Each may have a year's supply of empty cases on hand. They will not switch to the "New and Improved Tide!" until these run out, because they're not willing to take the loss from dumpster-ing what might be $500K worth of slabs. So they're going to continue selling cases that they know can be easily tampered with until their inventory runs out. The only thing that would get them to change course will be if their customers stop slabbing comics and business dropped off.. THEN, they'd make a decision. It makes no sense to send CGC or CBCS an expensive book (say, $1000+) when you know you're going to get it back, in a slab that is going to be viewed as a negative, and harm your resale value, the moment the new slabs come out. Stop slabbing - Sit and wait - the slabs being sold are only good for $3 variants.

Good attempt at getting CBCS some lime light Dave. Unfortunately, they didn’t do their part that effectively. They were brutally honest without any real insight into what they will do. That’s the misstep here. Obviously these guys aren’t marketers, but no one wants an over zelaous buzz word spittin fool either. They do need someone to be their face and properly market their product. I’ll agree that their slab is better in hand it is the superior product, their new labels are nice too. But obviously they lose out on value. They should have ran a get the F away from CGC crossover sale, free would be a push, but like 50% off or something….anything to actually capitalize on the CGC mishap. They don’t really like to think outside of whatever box they created for themselves, that is clear. Also, no pics is laughable considering they had years to figure out a way to scan every book. Even CGC does that now for their books and trading cards.

Honestly these guys seemed very bland when talking and answering questions. I mean when your the face of the company you need to be enthusiastic and a people person. Both these guys seem bored or like a high school history teacher reading from a book. This is why you invest in your PR department so they can be the ones who do these kinds of interviews and able to answer questions. Add in the lack of innovation they have really done to their company other than adding grader notes to their books for free over cgc who eventually started doing it later on for free. Everything from more secure cases, high quality pics of their graded books, better labels(which took awhile to finally do), among other things. If they invested more into PR, and the items mentioned above. They might actually be able to increase the value of their books as right now there stuff still sells for 20% less than cgc. But this would be the perfect time to squeeze ahead and show real progress for them and grab a bigger share of the market.
