Me and my dog, Henry, came back from a winter walk cold, damp and starving. I put two Fray Bentos s/kidney in oven for our tea. Half an hour later, paradise on a plate. Henry nearly ate his dish too. Not fine dining but a helluva comfort food when you're knackered.

I remember having these occasionally when I was much younger (well over 50 years ago) and at that time I recall them being quite tasty & meaty. A few years ago I noticed them in the supermarket & they seemed amazingly cheap, I thought of my youthful good memories, and wondered if they could possibly taste any good for such a low price. It was tasty for sure, but mainly gravy with very little meat - being realistic that’s about all one can expect at such a price now. My trip down that particular memory lane is highly likely to remain a one time thing & I doubt I’d do a repeat, but I suppose if you’re on a very tight budget it might fit the bill.

I'm stunned to see anybody praise the meat content in these pies. I had one last year - I was craving that nostalgia kick of my childhood and skint unemployed days - and I was absolutely disgusted by how few solid pieces there were: 2 tiny pieces of kidney and only 4 or 5 small pieces of chewy 'steak'. I swear they must include gravy as 'meat content'. Forget the photo on the tin: no product realistically represents the contents on the packaging, but the amount of meat in the photo is about the total I got inside the whole pie. Fortunately for me, I love the undercooked pastry, so it was saved from being a written complaint by that alone. Utterly deceptive & overpriced. For the same money you could buy the raw ingredients and make several better pies.

One of the best "prepper foods" you can buy! Fray Bentos is actually a sea port in South America, where the majority of corned beef comes from. "Fray Bentos" means 'Friar Benedict' in English. Don't worry, you're unfamiliarity to these pies is strictly down to your age, I was bought up in the 1970s where these were a dinner time staple!! I've eaten one that's Been 3 years out of date and it was fine. I'll usually throw a baked potato in with one as the cook time is the same!

I used to have one now and then as a kid. I still love them but I find they make work cooking them, they make a mess of the oven too much for me to bother with them now. I've also never eaten one from the tin, have always had them on a plate before. Getting them out of the tin when cooked and hot, is awkward for me also, so I don't bother with them, unfortunately. Man I wish we had more British style meat pies in America. I love meat pies so much! Whenever I am in the UK, meat pies are pretty much all I eat. The closest I can get here in the States is Marie Callender's frozen beef pot pie which isn't quite the same. Chicken pot pie is a thing here, but is rather regional to the South and also not the same. People say British food is bad, but I say that is a stereotype. I love British food.

Not bad are they really?! I bought the beef and onion one today and its currently cooking away. On a BigClive video someone suggested when getting close to cooked take the crust off and let that finish separately on an oven proof dish. Fray Bentos pies were one of my staples for years. The best is undoubtedly Steak And Ale and in recent years they launched a chicken curry-type that's pretty damned good. They could be acquired cheaply for a long time, but eventually the elastic on the supermarket price point snapped and they got suddenly pricier. I had to ease up on these pies anyway as part of losing some weight - and now I walk past them longingly!

Keep tins cleaned up to enhance your experience with pies instead of buying the same ones buy: - ready made rolled pastry -canned stewed steak in gravy -jar of Rich and Creamy Mushroom sauce +packet of cooked chicken strips or chargrilled one Use slice of pastry on bottom of can , fill it up and cover with another slice of pastry on top , bake it in your oven .You will be surprised how tasty it will be compared to bentos;
