I agree. I LOVE All bird species but macaws are a bit scary. I have quite a bit of experience with birds. I have a parakeet and a lovebird And I got some nice bites before. Like I’m ok with approaching a cockatoo or something like that. I have taken pictures with big macaws but I was in a pet store once and there was his macaw and there was a cockatoo. I quickly came over to the cockatoo and held him and everything but the macaw I would just walk up to him. I think it’s their massive beak.

Tiffany Parkhomenko People don’t realize Cockatoo bite a lot harder then Macaws due to the 3 point beak. A Macaw will usually give you a warning before a bite comes. Some Cockatoos can be very temperamental and if you get one angry you will get bite in a split second, before you will even realize it. Macaws are usually more laidback. People just get scared of the large size of the Macaws but it the other way around.

Macaws are the gentle giants , I have rescued everything from parrotlets to a macaw. Received more bites from budgies and conures ( Including one bite from a conure that needed stitches ) then I ever did from the larger species such as cockatoos and macaws. It's almost like the larger the bird the more gentle they are, having said that my Eclectus can be slightly unpredictable during mating season but it is just a case of looking out for the signs that he is getting frustrated and backing off a bit.

I have a nonflighted macaw that loves to go to town, and its amazing the range of responses she gets, from ecstatic to absolute fear. I never have been able to figure out where some people's phobia of parrots can come from... They may be big but they look like nature's clown.

@@NeIIy - I would ask the owner if the bird likes being approached and perhaps touched strangers. If it's ok with the bird and its owner, then I would have to pet it (the bird). I also give credit to macaws for being intellegent; they're not likely to peck your eyes out if they're kept fed. That's my strategy for avoiding feeling phobic about someone's huuuge pet bird.

It's strange that the other young doctor is afraid of macaws but she completed avian residency and did MACAW research at the Tambopata macaw research center in Peru. How do you complete these programs and be afraid of large parrots?

That exactly what I was thinking. Shame is not just the doctor in this video, but vet in my area as well. Cockatoos they are fine with as bought in mines and she even had him on her shoulder and my other cockatoo they even pull a blood feather without restraining her as she was behaved, but bring in a Macaw and she well trained as I train her, so she behaved as well and don't get aggressive at all, but they are very hesitant to go near her. Only one doctor that not scared of her, as have two of her own.

It's just the sheer size of the macaws, kinda intimidating even if they're actually one of the chiller big birds. Along the same lines that someone might be all fine working with a yorkie dog but less so a great dane, hasn't a thing to do with personality or temperament.

Me and my hubby have 2 blue and gold macaws and a military macaw. Let me tell you they bite all the time, scream so loud it’s ear piercing. They are beautiful to look at but you gotta Remember these birds are strong an exotic.

Usually if they are screaming, or biting means they are not be handle much, or getting the attention they need. Macaw are usually laid back and are quiet and usually warn before a bite to follow. It rare if she bites. My Cockatoos are way more trouble makers and the blue and gold Macaw we have usually tells them to "shut up" .
