Having lived in Kansas for almost 30 years, I can report that Phelps and WBC received much more attention nationally than they ever did at a local level. Kansans generally viewed the WBC congregation as a group of lunatics to be ignored.

Thankfully, they got our dismissal time wrong and stood in the pouring rain for 45 minutes wondering why no students were coming out (no pun intended). As a child I went to a Catholic elementary school that was connected to a church. When I was in about 5th grade the Westborough Baptist Church came to protest the funeral of a fallen soldier (and to condemn the "filthy papists" while they were at it.) I'll never forget how surreal it was to read their ugly signs telling me, the entire school and staff, and grieving family members that God hated us and was going to send us to hell. Once they had finally left the entire school (only about 200 kids altogether) came out and held our own "counter protest". We lined up across the street holding flags as the family left, silently showing solidarity with them. Truly an experience I will never forget.

I don't think we have this church in my country, but we do have something similar. They are very sympathetic to the far right extremist groups and have been labeled as a terrorist threat as such. Did you watch that episode on the Tyra Banks Show (if that's her name...)? She hosted a mother and her two daughters that were deep in this church and it was interesting to watch. These women were extremely intelligent, but they sounded so angry and allowed their hatred and ignorance to manifest itself in how they presented themselves. It was both interesting and sad to see. However, one of the daughters got out of that church and did a Ted Talk about her experiences in this church. How they get you and shape you into some kind of soldier for the church at a young age. It was so eye-opening to watch that.

@@TiffWaffles Yeah, I've seen the Shirley Phelps-Roper interview and Megan Phelps-Roper's Ted Talk. I had my own exchange with Shirley that day they came to WBC. Very strange individual. I'm a historian by profession but I minored in Religious Studies during my B.A. and took a few classes on militant and extremist religious movements, and I've always noticed something: people like Fred Phelps, Jim Jones, Osama bin Laden, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, etc. seem to rarely possess true faith, but use religion a convenient vehicle to express their narcissism and sadism. They take alienated and vulnerable people and give them a sense of feeling special, that the world that has rejected them is doomed and they will inherit the kingdom of God through violence and hatred. In the end it always ends up destroying the cult leader though.

Great analysis Dr. Grande. You nailed it. I lived in Topeka for 40 years. At first we (the community as a whole) were shocked and outraged by Fred and WBC, and we would speak out against them. That just seemed to encourage them further. Eventually we tried to ignore them, hoping the lack of attention would cause them to get bored and stop. Seems the more we did ignore them the bolder and more obnoxious their actions became. I think that's when they started taking their "show" on the road and going national. Also interesting fact most of the members of the WBC cult were Fred's family and extended family. Believe me NONE of them could be reasoned with, truly obnoxious people.
@mkuti-childress36252 жыл бұрын
I saw the same thing you did. I think the people in the entire state learned to ignore them over time. Part of the problem was that so many national TV shows and news programs gave them air time, which was tremendously reinforcing. And unfortunately, people in other states were not desensitized, so in their horror, they tried to fight back, which was exactly what the WBC wanted. They actually protested the funeral of a close National Guard friend of my brothers when he was killed in Afghanistan. The protest was here in Kansas, so the family and friends took it about as well as they could, and the Patriot Guard stood in front of them with large flags, blocking them from view and drowning out their ugly words.

People would follow him and take in every word and give him their last dime. He tried to control everyone around him and people let him because they thought he spoke for God. You accepted his authority as being from God until you had enough of it and saw through it for what it was. People aren't as gullible in these days and I've heard my Dad say over and over, "why don't people listen to me, I'm a GOSPEL minister?!" He actually thought he has some kind of secret knowledge no one else was privy to. I escaped pretty young and made a good life for myself regardless of his warnings I would burn in hell. There are really amazing instances of compassion from communities who organize counter-protests to these awful WBC signs. At Matthew Shepard's funeral (who was a gay student brutally murdered in Wyoming), Angel Action counter-demonstrators wore white angel costumes with 10-foot wingspans rising seven feet to protect mourners at the funeral from having to see Westboro’s hate signs. Families of fallen soldiers can invite The Patriot Guard Riders to send motorcycle enthusiasts who use their motorcycles and large U.S. flags to shield mourners from Westboro’s protestors at funerals and along funeral routes. Some people also formed a human wall against WBC picketing the funeral for victims of the mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

I'm a Kansas native who has lived in either Kansas City or a suburb of it, Overland Park pretty much mu entire life. My mom, a retired special-ed teacher of 45 yrs, works at a non-profit camp for teens and young adults who have Autism Spectrum Disorder or other disabilities, and a couple years ago a young lady enrolled in her camp who was a niece or great niece of Fred Phelps who had gotten out of the WBC cult. She apparently had an extremely rough time re-assimilating into every day society. She had to work really hard every day to basically deprogram herself from all the harm the "church" had done to her. Really sad, but also really great that she was able to get away from that monster and his ideals.

Fred was kicked out of his own church. He was also kicked out of his home because he lived in a parsonage (a church house provided for a member of the clergy). He didn’t mind being mean to other people for decades but when those he taught to hate turned on him, he suddenly didn’t understand why they would do that to him. This guy stopped talking to anyone who left his church including his own children. He felt sorry for himself when the tables were turned. By the way, they didn’t believe in funerals so there was no funeral for him. I’ve seen some of the other members after Fred died, he meant nothing to them.

Dr. Grande, taping interviews for my podcast I put your questions about predestination and the purpose of the protests directly to Shirley and Fred Phelps Jr several times during their visits to Chicago. Both Shirley and Fred Jr told me they were "bearing witness" by absorbing abuse in the place of The Lord during their protests. They told me they felt they were there to suffer persecution in the name of the Lord. I told them that I thought that was blasphemous from a Christian perspective since Jesus I supposed to be the sacrificial Lamb, etc. But they weren't hearing it. Great analysis!
@RaysDad2 жыл бұрын
The "predestination" beliefs of Fred Phelps are in the tradition of protestant Calvinism. These beliefs are a large part of American religious history, but Calvinism started to wane in the late 19th century and is rare now, although some smaller denominations are still identifiable as Calvinist, and the mainline protestant churches (Methodist, Baptist, et al.) can lapse into Calvinism.

Back when I was a 'fundy' Christian in the mid 80's I was working at a missionary ranch in Texas and a traveling Christian family got permission to camp at the ranch for a week or so. Friendly people, but they also believed in predestination. It was interesting talking with them. Their method of 'witnessing' to possible non-believers aka trying to win converts was a curious round of questions to determine if the person was actually one of 'the elect' or not. If they were one of the elect but not fully aware of it, they'd be encouraged to join a church, read the bible, pray etc. If deemed not one of the elect, they'd end the conversation feeling the person was one of the condemned from the beginning of time and no longer worth any acknowledgement. The most disturbing part of that encounter was when I went to one of the teachers on the ranch and asked if they'd come with me to debate with this fellow and his family, about their odd beliefs. I was told such a conversation would be useless because although the teacher felt the families outlook on the bible was wrong, he didn't think he'd be able to convince them otherwise because he said the bible does indeed have passages that support their beliefs. That was probably when I really started questioning the bible and Christianity and thinking about it in a more critical way.

They had all these "God hates ...." signs and a bunch of anti-abortion posters showing graphic photos of aborted fetuses. There were several Chicago cops nearby presumably to make sure nothing broke out between the citizens of Chicago and these tools. I didn't spend too much time talking smack to them(and I didn't even raise my voice), but I did tell them that they are sickos, and that they are one of the best arguments FOR abortion. I told them if they had been aborted, this world would be a much better place. I actually made a couple of Chicago cops laugh. I can't begin to tell you how rare and difficult it is to make a Chicago cop crack up, but I managed to do it that day!

As of today 4-21 I am on page 74 of Libby Phelpes's book, Girl on a Wire. It is an honest portrayal of what life was like in the Westboro cult. I can't wait to get to the last chapter. "Grampy", as Libby called him, should have opened his Bible and read I Corinthians 13:1, "if I have faith...and give my body to be burned and have not LOVE I am nothing." We are called to represent Jesus not Fred, not the Westboro, cult, and certainly not ourselves. As a born again believer it sickens me to know there are professing Christians holding up signs and soldier's funerals. Paul's mission was to take the message of the risen Christ to the ends of the Earth. All these people know how to do is picket military funerals and make fools of themselves. If you hate America so much then move to North Korea. Try picketing one of their military funerals and see where it gets ya!

Part of the reason Phelps got so much attention I that he fit the model of what many in the media wanted to believe about religious people, judgemental, hateful, insane etc. They also pegged him as a right-winger when Phelps actually thought of himself as a left-winger, supported social justice and ran for office as a Democrat. Phelps recognized that there is no such thing as bad publicity when leading a cult and he expanded his hate to include slain soldiers and children to incite all of the people who didn't care about his anti-gay campaigns. The correct procedure would have been to not try to paint him as right or left but as a mentally ill person who deserves no attention but instead the media used him as click bait and gave him the notoriety that he craved.
