Jeff Lynne, another rock legend, once talked about the time when he produced a song (Let it shine) for Brian‘s 1988 solo album. He said that Brian was very nice, but the working conditions were so bad that it was an experience which Lynne wouldn‘t have wanted to repeat. As I later read the books about Brian‘s life, including his autobiographies (the first one having been practically written by Landy himself, as Brian has admitted he hadn‘t even read the final draft) and seen the docs, it became clear that Lynne had talked about the 24/7 control by Landy and his team. Yes, Landy did save Brian‘s life in 1983, as he was on the verge of killing himself, but then he took total control over Brian‘s life, as we all know. Or as Mike Love said, Brian „became the goose that laid golden eggs“. A prime example of a therapist who went way too far and eventually had paid the price.
@gerrydooley9512 жыл бұрын
As a major fan of Brian and the Beach Boys since 1969, and I mean obsessed, this is a very sad although interesting chapter in the Brian Wilson saga. The positive aspect of Landy's treatment was getting Brian into shape: losing a lot of weight and getting off all dangerous substances. The worst was doping Brian up so much that Brian couldn't think straight. The tragedy was that Brian is a beautiful and kind soul and has never really been the same since his association with Landy. However Brian is a very strong person and has never given up. He continues to tour and record and is still Brian Wilson.

It's too bad narcissists rarely seek therapy. They also don't tend to benefit much from it if they get into it, cause they think they know more than the therapist and can explain everything away with "he/she was a bad therapist." The principle of autonomy means anyone can nope out of therapy that isn't court ordered. Being held involuntarily as a danger to self/others rarely involves much in the way of therapy.

I am a clinical psychologist in Southern California. Like many psychologists and psychiatrists, we have some celebrity patients. Maintaining boundaries is essential will all patients and celebrities are no different. Confidentiality must be maintained. Yeah being part of a multisuccessful band. If he'd decided to drop out of the spotlight and recover in silence (which was probably for the better) but he was never that headstrong, even in his most creative period, his decisions were ultimately driven by the desires/needs of the band, hence no 'SMiLE' in '66-'67. I'm ASD and it's easy to relate to the feeling of being weighed down by what you've been struggling with while your strengths (seemingly few but extremely prodigious, almost obsessive) are at a means of exploitation. He wanted others' approval badly so that it would be easier to ignore or slag off everyday criticism, both internally and no doubt externally. At that point in the 80s people were convinced he was incapable of making hits. He was always an eccentric and difficult to conversate with even though he was 1 of if not the most candid, empathetic, and forgiving in his level of the music business of that era. He entered his 40s and like every popular musician aging into their third decade of recording, he made meandering yacht rock garbage with the ugly, dated production tricks of its time. No one bothered a Steve Winwood or an Aretha Franklin for toning down their image in the 80s. I think it's partly due to the ableist slant most in the biz had to manipulate Brian. Imagine being told constantly that your genius was allegedly taken away from you. And that drugs essentially "omit genius" when it's really due to your unsupportive, parasocial family and the wishes of industry execs who have the luck of not having the lineage of mental illness in their bloodline. I'd possibly overmedicate too if I were in Brian's shoes. Even when just experiencing it secondhand, having to console someone having a schizophrenic episode, from what they're describing *isn't* pretty.

Dr Landy started off with the best of intentions which was to treat his client but became seduced by fame and fortune and transformed into a dark force in Brian Wilson’s life resulting in his eventual sacking as Brian’s therapist and professional chaos. What is sad is that had Dr Landy not stayed at the fair too long and left after getting Brian better he would have been hailed as a success but instead he got involved in Brian’s professional life and that was his downfall. Sadly, Dr Landy did help Brian and his faults now overshadow his help to Brian which is unfortunate.

I don't like anyone who thinks they are better than anyone else. It is such an ugly thing to me. This guy was obviously taking advantage of Mr. Wilson because he was so vulnerable and desperate for help. It's really sad.

Brian wasn’t just a member of The Beach Boys. He wrote and composed essentially all the songs to where others in the band had to deal with negative feelings around that including jealousy and resentment. This was made worse by his disease.

As someone who's been fascinated by Brian's story for several years, I'm glad you covered this case! There are so many interesting aspects to it, for those who want to go beyond what you could cover here. I personally feel that Brian was so drawn to Landy because he was reliving the trauma he experienced from his father, another abusive and controlling man who desired fame. Brian's story is both sad and inspiring.

Merry Christmas everyone. I know Brian Wilson, he was my neighbor. I can't believe my luck that you, Dr Grande are looking at this case now. My name is Michael Hughes and I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in January 1973. Shortly after, my family moved to the town of Portmarnock, a seaside town, north of Dublin. An enclave for the rich. We just considered it home. On our weekend trips to the ice cream store in Malahide my father would point out.... That's were the beach boy lives. This is around 1977 to 1979. Interestingly enough, we emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1981 were I grew up listening to a band, the Barenaked Ladies who had a hit song, Brian Wilson. A song about how Brian lay in bed, suffering from mental illness after being a huge star. Well, now you know where he spent some of that time. Crazy!

Episode Suggestion. Marilyn Manson. He’s got a current story that came out this week in The Rolling Stone. His substance abuse and so-called “bad girl cages” he places his girlfriends in is just psychotic. So I request this analyzation. It can never be as good as today’s episode, but it will blow everyone’s mind. Thank you Dr Grande. Your the best at what you do, bar none.
