Most likely this is early 80s. I heard Hub many times in this period and this was when his technical facility was extraordinary ( and , within his genre, unmatched by anyone ever , imo ). It's not just playing super high, it's playing a blistering hard-bop style with fast, loud, long lines all over the horn, nailing all sorts of intervals in tune, lots of different attacks, with a great deal of expressiveness. Amazing stuff.

These 2 part rec. ( highly sug. listen 2nd p. too. Big thumbs up for the provider!) have been in my jazz favs. for years. I was at the '82 concert of VSOP in Donostia with Tony Williams & Marsalis bros. (Don't mean better) but couldn't find this rec. so far but loved anyone could load it. I was 18 yrs. old at the time and the performance was well above my comprehension at the time.

McCoy just absolutely kills it. Ron is in and out and roving passionately. Elvis just does the bebop plus thang. This is Mccoy’s whole awesome bag in one tune. Freddie can’t quite sustain and maintain it…trio woulda been better perhaps…it’s all McCoy here folks IMHO.

This may have been the rare and dream quintet we heard at the Paramount Theater in Oakland in '75. They played in Chicago and in NYC also, in what was called the "Downbeat Poll Winners Tour." That memorable night we got to be there for only time ever that McCoy performed with the great Rahsaan Roland Kirk (with Elvin on drums)!
@PepperWilliams_songcovers

Damn!!!!!!!!! I had to come back and hear this again in 2022! McCoy Tyner is in serious "Beast Mode" here along with Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and I'm not sure if that's Elvin Jones or not, (even though the information says that). McCoy quotes "A Love Supreme" motif throughout. This has got to be his greatest solo ever! A true G.O.A.T. Now, as far as who the drummer is: Elvin almost invariably exploits McCoy's left hand when he's comping and soloing. I don't hear that here at all! McCoy would 'set up' these explosive interplays between the two of them throughout his solo, but the drummer fails to take advantage of it each time! The song, "Pursuance" from Coltrane's epic masterpiece, is stated here as an example (follow the link after my commentary). Listen to how Elvin plays these subtle intricate polyrhythms behind McCoy's solo (which starts at 1:55), and then, reaching a climax when Trane comes in at 4:07 all the way to where Coltrane goes straight into the stratosphere with Elvin "right on his tail" @ 4:43 and on!!! Wha's so amazing, is that Elvin is not only interacting with Coltrane, but also with McCoy....SIMULTANEOUSLY!! I bought this album back in 1972 or so, and I still hear things that I missed over the years. I truly believe that the drummer on this live performance (also very good), is someone other than Elvin "kick ass" Jones. Love to hear your thoughts!
@jazzster123
@jazzster123 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your observations! But if you want to know for sure that it is Elvin Jones, listen to the drum solo on the second part. The solo is around 3mins or so after Ron Carter's bass solo. (When posted, the file size was too large so I had to split it up). kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJW0nnyXideLm80 without question, that's Elvin!

McCoy, Carter, and Jones are the only people in the world that can play this hard and make if feel so good. That rhythm section is destroying planets! They play so hard and intense! I can never get enough of McCoy, does anyone else even compare?
@brucebud
@brucebud 17 жыл бұрын
That solo is unbeleivable in its intensity and ideas. Whew! What perplexes me though is that dosen't sound like Elvin. He is not following McCoy with the polyrythmns with which he has become associated. He seems to be mostly keeping time. Is that really Elvin? Either way, thanks for the clip!
@pepperwilliams4428
@pepperwilliams4428 2 жыл бұрын
After I came back to solo, I believe that you’re 100% correct! That can’t be Elvin Jones, because he would had followed McCoy’s left hand, which was so forceful. There was so many missed opportunities to propel McCoy’s solo into infinity, instead of part way to planet Pluto. The drummer’s timing was perfect, but this wasn’t the Master Elvin Jones

I have changed the spelling in the description, as far as I can tell when originally released in 1961 it was spelled as 'Birdlike' rather than 'Byrdlike'. But I have seen it spelled both ways and some claim it was a tribute to Donald Byrd, but here we can take Freddie's word for it.

I hear that! So much great music was created in the 60's I'd need another 2 lifetimes to listen to it all and then 3 more to get tired of it. Then when you add everything that those guys put out in the 70's and 80's it doesn't leave much room for listening to the what is being done now, especially when so much of it is derivative and pale copies of all the original stuff. They broke the mold when they created these 4 giants and ain't nobody going to match them.

@TiteTrax It was a blanket statement about music. Such statements are simplistic representations of a complex world of arts, culture, politics, economics, etc. No doubt Bud was most influential in the bop era. Tyner and Evans are equally influential in the more modern era of jazz. Bop, as all artistic idioms do, became exhausted as a means of evolving the music. Evans was every bit as revolutionary as Powell. Whose to say Mozart wasn't the most influential pianist ever? What's the criteria?

Technically better than Powell. I do not wish to get involved in your argument but that is the most ridiculous statement I've heard in a while. BTW I'm a fan of both. Powell influenced every pianist after 1945 and Evans was probably the most influential pianist after 1960, along with Tyner & Hancock imo. Who did Evans call the greatest musician of all time? Bud Powell. You've got to know your history.
