Montserrat Caballe (died 2018) was THE greatest Spanish opera singer. Freddie said she had the most beautiful voice in the world. They grew very fond of each other. This song was performed in the 1992 Olympics...sadly Freddie passed in 1991.

Montserrat Caballe is so adorable! Everytime I hear and see her she puts a smile on my face. First time I heard her was in a German TV show (I was a little girl) when she was singing with her daughter a song called "Duet for two cats". Now, that was a special one. 😂 It showed her funny side. Meoooow!

Greetings from Germany...She was one of only a few who knows about Freddie's HIV illness. He was overwelming over her reaction. She treats him totaly normaly, where others maybe would stay away, she touched him and even kissed him, without any fear. And, wow, this brings me to tears right know. And he was so thankful for what she gave him. It's meant everything to him. Awesome...

You should listen to "Exercises in free love" - the song Freddie wrote for Montserrat. It's a demo, and he's singing her part - how he thought her voice would sound. When she listened to the tape she was amazed that Freddie (whose natural voice was a baritone) was able to sing like this. Freddie and Montserrat planned to record only one song - "Barcelona", for the Olympics 1992. But at their first meeting she asked him "How many songs are usually on a rock album?" And he said "Nine or ten". And she was like "Alright, then we will do 10 songs!" It was the best moment of Freddie's career, he was so happy. He said that of everything that he did in his life he was the most proud of his album with Montserrat. He adored her and they became close friends. She was one of the first people he told he had Aids, he told her he won't be alive to sing "Barcelona" at 1992 Olympics. When Freddie died they played Monsterrat's aria "D’amour sull ‘ali Rose" at his funeral, it was Freddie's favorite aria.

She was from Barcelona. Freddie wrote the song for her and as a duet. He loved opera’s and her. She said she always sang technically and he taught her to really feel the music and express it with your body and hands. They recorded an album together. She died just a few years ago. I don’t think you heard the ending. Btw you are pronouncing her name correctly. Ca ball yeah

Anybody who thinks Montserrat Caballe, the WORLD'S greatest soprano operatic diva of her time didn't know how to feel music and express it with her body and hands, has never seen and heard her in any of her operas (well over 80 roles and over 4,000 performances) but, as she said, Freddie opened a window on a whole new world for her.

REALLY enjoyed your reaction! The awe was just like I felt the first time I heard this. When the two of them sing together in perfect harmony it is simply astounding, isn't it. I have read that Freddie Mercury frequently attended the opera, and in fact a couple of his songs are based on opera plots, including Bohemian Rhapsody. Montserrat Caballe was one of the pre-eminent sopranos of her time and the two of them became close friends. I think you'd enjoy the song Golden Boy that they did together as well.

Thanks for having such great audio on this! I also had not heard (or heard of) this collab until about 20 years after Freddie died and now it is my all time number one piece of musical theater. There is a live version of this piece (which turned out to be Freddie's last public performance) that, in addition to the vocal fireworks, contains actual fireworks that is the best staging of a live piece of music that I have ever seen. Usually I watch that version of this song because the audio is usually so much better. BUT, you had great audio on this version....much better than I have heard anywhere else. Thanks for playing, reacting and posting! 10 out of 10 for your engineering skills.

I first heard this in 1988, shortly after the release. A friend was coming back from a vacation in Europe and had bought it in Amsterdam. After the first track, I loudly asked, -as a Queen/Freddie fan since 1973- “Who is this fat, screeching, diva making MY Freddie sound like so much tinned beef!?” Need I have to say that I ❤❤ every note and nuance! May they rest peacefully, until we meet again, someday. It’s pretty to think so.

If you watched the Bohemian Rhapsody movie you may remember that Freddie had a love for Opera music. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) approached Freddie regards writing a song for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. And one of Freddie's favourite opera singers just so happens to come from Barcelona. But Freddie wrote the song with help from Mike Moran who I gather is actually the orchestra conductor that we saw in this video.

Freddie along with a co writer wrote all the songs for this album ‘Barcelona’. Montserrat Caballe was an extraordinary Spanish opera soprano. They were the first to combine opera with rock. A year after Freddie passed this song was the official Olympics theme song in Barcelona in 1992. They were great friends. You must listen to the rest of the album as Freddie sings in Spanish and Japanese. Also he had another album he made solo- ‘Mr. Bad Guy’. But to get a tiny bit of Freddie’s full vocal range you must listen to ‘Exercises in Free Love’. Thank you for your wonderful reaction

Brother it's amazing to see the younger generation of people do reactions to songs I grew up with. To see your utterly amazement and appreciation for those songs. Some, such as this 9ne had a profound affect on my life, and others that did not, but still was good to listen to. IMHO I think that a bit of the great music died with Freddy's death. He did from rock and roll to rock to opera, immensely talented and flamboyant, yet very shy, almost withdrawn in his personal life. And he loved cats😻

The video clip you showed and understandably enthused over was I believe, filmed during the first performances filmed in 1987, initially at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza. When the proposed collaboration between the two musical giants from completely different worlds, he a global rock superstar and she considered by many to be one of the greatest Opera "Diva's"(I use the term in it's orginal meaning here), ever, to perform the improbable combination of a "rock/operatic"duet, it was greeted with scepticism and derision. Montserrat was even accused of betraying her operatic heritage and dire consequnecs for both were forecast, should they proceed. Yet proceed they did, steadfastly ignoring their critics and deteremined to contiue with their collaboration. They had already become devoted friends by this stage. The initial performance of the stirring duet was received with instant wild, rapturous acclaim. Freddie and Montserrat had not only succeeded, they had superceded expectations on every level and confounded their critics, forever silencing them. Originally composed as a tribute and homage to Montserrat Caballe, who was born in Barcelona and lived there, it was also the venue for their first actual meeting, which was to develop into a deep friendship, lasting all their lives. Subsequently they were approached by the comittee, fronting the bid for the city of Barcelona to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, and who wished to use the triumphant duet as central to their bid. Both performers enthusiastically agreed and the bid was indeed successful. Perhaps the most dramatic performance oif the piece, took place at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura, in Barcelona in Ocotober 1988, (available also here on You Tube), during the lavish and joyous celebrations to officially welcome the "Olympic Flag" to the city. With full symphony orchestra, powerful backing singers, floodlit fountains and fireworks, it is truly the most amazingly "over the top" piece of musical theatre ever. Yet it in no ways overshadows the monumental abilities and talents of the legendary duo, performing this now triumphant anthem. It was hoped by some, that they might perform the piece at the Opening Ceremony, but the fates decreed otherwise and Freddie tragically died 7 months before the actual event which featured a recording ofj it, by now the officially recognised Olympic Anthem of the city. High praise indeed. Montserrat only performed the piece once after Freddies' demise and that was to a recording of his voice, but it was an incredibly difficult feat for her to undertake emotionally, which left her completely drained. She never attempted it again, preferring to keep the celebrated duet as a sacred tribute to her dear, cherished friend and collaborator. Sadly she died in 2018 and the world suddenly became both a little greyer and colder. However thanks to technology we can still enjoy and thrill to this magical, monumental, triumphant piece of music history.. Freddie once said to "Montsy"(his nickname for her), " Music knows no Age....". How true that has become now 37, years after the first performance.. Now and Forever....."VIVA, BARCELONA"....!!!

It's funny that one of your observations was Freddie keeping up with her. Montserrat was a top tier Opera singer (one of the best in the world) and had a very powerful voice but when they first sang together Freddie held himself back so that he wouldn't overwhelm HER. He was very pleasantly surprised to find he had to go all out to keep up. They became very close friends in the last few years of Freddie's life. In an interview later, Montserrat said that singing with him was the most free she'd ever been in her career. (I guess Opera singers are very restricted vocally)
