Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.
This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

Barcelona '92 is probably the peak of Olympics as a cultural event
@SeverityOne
@SeverityOne Ай бұрын
What's also worth noting is that, contrary to some other cities that organised the Olympics, everything built for the event is still in use. The Olympic stadium dated from 1929, and FC Barcelona currently play there. The swimming pool is still in use, and the Olympic Village is now an up-market residential area. There's very much a before and an after 1992 in Barcelona. In case you're wondering, we took a bus tour yesterday, and this was all explained. Woke up in Ciutat Vella this morning, to the sound of birdsong, and arrived from El Prat just a couple of hours ago.

@@katrinablackwell5174 Thank you. I'm not an opera specialist, nor much interested in rock music, but they were an inspired duo. It's the magic of the music that brought them together. Freddy said that Monstserrat "IS music", and I have no doubt that this is true for both of them. If only they had recorded more-- Freddy in opera and Caballe in pop music. For them, It's like turning on a faucet, and the music pours out.

I'm a fan from way back in the day. I've heard Freddie sing many songs. But the songs he wrote for Montserrat gave us the Greatest vocal performances of his life. The planets aligned or something because the music they made together was truly something you only see once in a lifetime. They were perfect together.

I love how they were both completely themselves, and at the same time are so comfortable working with someone from such a different musical world. Each of them was a genius and a diva in their own way, yet they shared the stage and worked together seamlessly. This was a moment for the world to treasure.

That's the power of music and of friendship. As a testament to how close they became on a personal level, she knew about what he was dealing with at the time, and only a small handful of people could claim that. They almost certainly would have done more work together professionally too if... well, if Freddie had more time. I read somewhere that they wanted to do The Phantom of the Opera.

Freddie, this was the song you were born to write. But Freddie, when you died you took my heart with you and I've never been able to feel again. I'm an empty shell shuffling around. I miss you.

Every single time I'm listening to this, I'm crying like a baby. It's just unbelievable how you can literally hear them feeling the music, their talent and their passion. This song is absolutely overwhelming.

I told my son that Freddy Mercury had an operatic range and power that was unusual for a pop singer. And here we are in this performance seeing two of the most incredible singers to grace the stage. I am very moved and in awe

@@FinntrolliSUOMI well of course he’s not singing in an operatic style. That’s not what he’s known for. However he’s got great range and power and energy. Love him!
