That’s so funny, Freddie - as soon as you mentioned an unfriendly harbour port from which you meant to take a ferry to the Gilly Islands, I knew exactly where you meant - Bang Sal. My GF and I hired a scooter from some guys at there last year - we had a great time pottering around the island, and the only time we ever felt unwelcome was on the eastern side in a large town called, I think, Lombok Lombok. Anyway, when we returned the scooter the friendly dudes that hired us the scooter quickly became very unfriendly. The boss, if I could call him that accused, me of damaging the bike, repeatedly pointing and demanding money. Of course, I treated the bike like a beloved pet, and had taken photographs at the beginning because I’d heard about this kind of stuff. The guy got really angry and kept following me around the port shouting at me. I just stood my ground and ignored him, and eventually he gave up. But just a really bad vibe at that place.

3 type of locals in Indonesia : - People who accustomed with foreign visitor, like people in touristy area (bali), and business area (south jakarta) - People who rarely see foreigner, but friendly manner : like in java, borneo and majority places - People who rarely see foreigner, but hostile manner : this is special case, probably cuz this places are too conservative, or just to wild (locals often get warning ), but this places ain't many anymore, yet you should aware for local custom.

🤔 Being half Indonesian, it always surprises me that most of the world only know Bali and Lombok yet no clues of the stunning neighboring Sumba island. Indonesia consists of 17k islands, hundreds of languages, cultures and customaries, colors and flavors unique to each provinces. The world's heritage prestine Raja Ampat of Papua, the incredible Mentawai surfing paradise and Bunaken, Toba Lake in sumatra island and so much more which u need a life time to Explore. Crime? Ain't it the same everywhere else in the world?

I have been to many parts of Asean and I can share with you why Bali is popular and world famous; its unique Balinese culture, architecture, gardening, interior design and open mindedness with tourists. It offers almost most things tourists like to see and do around the world except snow and skiing. Many Indonesians don't know western Australia and Queensland has long, clean and quiet beaches or islands than what you can find in the whole Indonesia. You can also find cheaper islands for diving and beaches than Raja Empat and Sumba in Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. Places like Toba and mentawai in Sumatra are hard to get to and its Northern region conservatism may turn away western tourists. Backpackers who have a lot of time and could endure language barrier and travelling inconveniences will have many places to explore in Indonesia. For the other travellers who have limited time for their holiday, they would rather fly straight into the destination that offers value for money accommodation and comfort (Spa, various cuisines they are familiar with) while doing sightseeing in comfort and style. Lombok enjoys a bit of spillover popularity from Bali due to proximity and also some offering of Balinese style resorts and hotels. You can see however besides Gili islands and Sengigi, the other part of Lombok is seldom frequented by foreign tourists. I have been to Lombok once and won't return cos there is no culture or hangout cafes and nightlife but I return to Bali every year at least once except (2021-2022) since first time visiting in 2008.

@@alexlee2765 Lombok does have culture, hangout cafes and nightlife, it's just that you haven't encountered them I believe. Clearly you've never been to Gili Trawangan (party island of Lombok) or Kuta Lombok for example. Kuta is like a mini modern day Uluwatu over there where all the expats tourists are at and Gili T doesn't need any introduction 😅 Just coz you haven't encountered it, doesn't mean it does not exist. And about why Bali is much more famous for tourists, it's because of convenience like you said. It's built as a tourist trap, westernised to the max and everything is overpriced (for Asian standards). And let's be honest, most tourists don't even explore the whole island of Bali and just stick to the south side where the crowd is eventho that's the most non authentic side of Bali. If one would actually venture to the other side, one as a tourist would actually appreciate what that island has to offer. Similar to like when you're comparing places like Exmouth for example, most Australians don't even go there eventho it's very stunning just coz the lack of convenience it has to offer 😅

I just got back home to Stockholm, Sweden, after 3 months on Koh Samui in Thailand. The traffic is extremely dangerous. Scooters and big pick-up trucks en masse...No traffic rules are followed. The last month I saw 2 women die a couple of meters in front of me while I was driving my rented scooter. It was on two separate occations. I'll spare you the gruesome details. I too really missed cooking...But the traffic and the horrible accidents made me quite depressed... I am not going back...

The ferry terminals onto Lombok and off to the Gilis were just the ordinary hussles but not too aggressive and most people were friendly and welcoming. Some folks on Bali could be overly pushy and, lets not forget, this was not that long after the bomb in Kuta

If you're heading back to SE Asia for a prolonged period of time again, I would strongly suggest giving Chiang Mai a shot. £200-300 a month gets you a luxury apartment, the city is absolutely packed full of incredible coffee shops and cafes, it's far cheaper for everything than Bali, the surrounding mountains and areas are breathtakingly stunning for tons of video content and a much bigger scene for big bikes. I lived there for a while, you'd love it.

In 1981 I went to Bali on the way back from Australia, only 4 hours from Perth. I stayed in Kuta, which although fairly busy, (mainly with Aussies, as Bali is the equivalent of how popular Majorca is to the Brits), it was not grid locked. I rode around the rest of the stunningly beautiful island which had no traffic. I back packed from Bali to Java, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. On my return to England, I described Bali to my friends and family, as the best place I had visited, a paradise on earth. I suppose paradise lost was inevitable with the growth of tourism.

The stunning pictures of her and and the sceneries of lambok at the end of your jerney made me feel a bit forgiving again. OK. It was surely a kind adventure. Thank you for taking us with you. I've not been to Lombak, so I can't compare, but I've spent a couple of months each time I've been to Bali and have never come across any unpleasantness. I don't drive, so I had to rely on taxis and private drivers, which can add up and is a bit inconvenient as unlike in most other parts of South East Asia, there are no tuk tuks in Bali. The reason I probably won't be returning to the island is that it doesn't have any beautiful swimming beaches (surfers, of course, will love Bali!). But the beauty of its rice paddies, its mountains and its jungles is truly exceptional, and the Balinese aesthetic sense (especially in architecture, interior design, and woodwork, including furniture making) second to none.

Been visiting Bali since 1986, the Missus since 1974. No, Lombok doesn't look like Bali in 1986, perhaps mid 90's. We've tended to stay in a small, familiar area for the last 20 years, really since the bombimg. This year ventured to Seminyak and to an amazing restaurant at the north end of Canggu. Maybe 15 kilometres by road..........and roughly 2 1/2 hours each way! Never again. We knew it was bad but had no idea how bad. Ive no idea why anybody would go there, never mind extol the virtues of it. There are still lovely peaceful parts of Bali but they are becoming rarer and smaller by the day. A classic case of loving somewhere to death. We now head to other places for a quiet time and I'm not saying where.

We were in Lombok in '91 and stayed in Mataram, Sengiggi and Gili Air for maybe 9 or 10 days. No evidence of local trouble then. The new bungalows we were at on Gili Air was doomed for failure as it was built next to a graveyard. Meals were served to everyone at the same time, no choice, this is what we've got! I don't think they had a cook, we didn't stay for long after the tough, almost raw squid we had on the first night. I've been to Lombok since as a travel agent in 2001 in the Sengiggi region a had a marvellous time. My personal opinion regarding travel and tourism in Muslim countries is that they mostly don't get it. I've also been to Morocco, Oman and Malaysia but in Turkiye last month I was pleasantly surprised, they benefit from being a secular country. And yes, I've heard the machete story as well. Great video and decent comment, Bali has changed over the years we have visited, we have made lots of friends and family but even I wouldn’t visit certain islands and areas without our Bali family. In regards to the traffic….it’s manic but we are never in a rush to get somewhere we just call it bali time..

I had 3 months in Bali last yr & also several days in Lombok. Both places could not have been more welcoming. No issues in either place.. I'm about to head back to both soon

Did you visit West, North and East Bali ? No real traffic issues there. South Bali is only a small part of Bali. I assume you spent time in Ubud and Canggu as these are the 2 worse areas for traffic...we are arriving in a few weeks for our 6th visit and will NOT be going to any of those areas, there is so much to explore outside the tourist areas.. thanks for the videos, safe travels home.

Freddie, Accurate comments about Bali today. I'm Singaporean and wife is from Java. We were in Bali for 6 days just a few days ago. We visit Bali / Java often and we were previously considering Bali for our retirement home..... were. Totally agree with you on the traffic situation. It's terrible. We were fortunate that a friend lent us a scooter from the airport and we returned it to friend at airport, so we never used a car for the 6 days. Granted that perhaps there were many extra visitors from Java (because of the Hari Raya holidays and the China Labour Day long break), the traffic was horrible. Counted ourselves lucky to be on a scooter and riding pass all the slow moving/ stationary vehicles. Bike traffic wasn't that great either with everyone riding on left, on pavement, in between vehicles and literally every gap possible to get ahead. Locals, on the other hand, appear to welcome the "new situation", because it means the return of much needed spendthrift tourist and $$$. Riding around, you would have noticed many shops and malls shuttered. Victims of the travel restriction. Now that travel is back, labour to run these businesses are missing as most returned to their hometowns on the other islands. The traffic and increased crowd has made us reconsider retirement in Bali. On the other hand, returning travellers have made the idea of purchasing a investment property more attractive (long term lease or Airbnb). So like all else, there's the good and the bad of revenge travel. Keep up the great videos and if ever in Singapore, let me know. Seems you didn't get to see all in Singapore and I hope I get the chance to show you the real Singapore. Cheers Richard

Mmmmm.. why don't you try other parts of SE Asia.. Philippines for example. Amazing beaches, not so good roads either but at least they are wide enough. Great series.. really enjoyed it.

Most of Indonesian Roads are this bad some times I got up early and went out in the fresh morning air for a cycle ride mostly on a push bike some times on a motorcycle. But saying this I enjoyed my time I spend in Indonesia.

Again your going to make me cry😥but not so much. This has been my least fav due to the traffic and unpredictable/ predictable dangers. Though very interesting and great video and your honest review (quite visible in your eyes) Bali has some underlying bothersome politics as do many locations in that part of the world. Look forward to wherever next. Be safe in all that you do.
