Apparently Montserrat Caballé was one of the only people that could match Freddie in the showoff diva department, and Freddie has stated that he was both a fan of her and opera in general. Singing a duet with one of your heroes like that, that man was seriously living the dream.

When I was kid, this didn't really float my boat, but as I grown up, I can give Freddie huge kudos for this project. At the time I remember him saying something like 'I challenge any other rock singer to make an album with a genine opera diva and survive!' - he wasn't wrong - he's totally holding his own with Monserrat, and moreover they're singing his own material. He's doing what he loves and he knows he's doing it damn well!

if there's another thing, these two look EXTREMELY happy in each other's presence, and probably had a great deal of respect for one another. not only does the song make me feel happy, but how they seem to be really content with each other puts a smile on my face

I think they did. I believe I read Freddy who was a very private person despite his stage performances told her he was suffering from AIDS and she never revealed that to anyone but gave him a lot of emotional support.
@neuralmute4 жыл бұрын
@@judithmatthews8460 They became close friends very quickly when they worked together. Both had the utmost respect for the other's musical abilities, even though they were from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, and both were willing and eager to learn from each other. The anecdotes about when they met are adorable - Montsy was rather shy, and had no idea what to expect from this mad rock star, and Freddie was terribly nervous about meeting his favourite singer in the world. Then he began to play the piano, and all that disappeared. She was one of his closest confidantes for the rest of his (tragically short) life. May they be singing together again now.
@suestoons4 жыл бұрын
@@neuralmute I like the story that Freddie was chuffed thinking that they would do one song together and she assumed that they, of course, would do an album. Freddie's like "Gulp, now I have to come up with an album's worth of songs". LOL Tickles me for some reason.

Everybody giving so much importance to Mercury's performance but Montserrat's voice cannot be compared to his at all. It was a dream come true for Mercury to sing with her, don't forget that. Let's say that Mercury was super lucky to sing with her... I love this performance, but I particularly love it because of Montserrat Caballé. Such a wonderful voice...

@aniwilliams33705 ай бұрын
She also had mutual respect for his talents and I understand they adored each other (so I can't agree 'he was super lucky to sing with her'). There was equal mutual respect. It was a dream come true for him to sing with her, he was in total awe of her talents and thought at the very most she would agree to sing one song with him. But she was the one who asked 'how many songs do you put on a rock album? Then we'll do that ...'. On one of the songs (I can't remember which) she was reduced to tears when he was following her singing by speaking the same lyrics; she was asking why she should be there 'screaming' when his spoken words were so much more meaningful. They seemed to adore each other and had incredible respect for each other's talents ... when people keep trying to pit one against the other it seems pretty disrespectful to both of them when as music professionals they could each see/respect each other's different talents and then put them together with such amazing results ;-)
@SuperSilvertube5 ай бұрын
Freddie liked opera and one of his highest dreams was to sing with Caballé, not the other way around. She just accepted. Montserrat's vocal range is immensely greater than Freddie's. Without her this song wouldn't be the same. She is the one who made it amazing. He was super lucky, you like it or not. Sorry... I think you misunderstood what I wrote "Everybody's giving so much importance to Mercury's performance...", what about her? I'm not saying that Mercury lacked talent, but montserrat was sublime, so much so that without her it wouldn't be the same. What's more, I think it would have been even better if José Carreras or Plácido Domingo had done this performance with her more than with Mercury, to be fair... Ah, and she didn't scream, she just reached high notes :P
@judithmatthews846013 күн бұрын
Love and respect a powerful combination . From two masters of their trade, A Rock star and an opera singer. You can feel Freddy temping down that powerful voice to compliment and enhance hers. But then he put his foot down on the pedal and he soars. A never to be repeated masterpiece.
