Jean-Jacques Goldman's family was a family of proud Communist partisans. His father Alter Mojsze, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, was actually a member of the French Résistance movement against Nazi occupation during WW2, like many French Communists at the time. JJG's older brother Pierre was a guerrilla fighter, who went to Cuba and Venezuela, spent a few years in prison for armed robbery, and was assassinated at point-blank range in 1979 in Paris by three mysterious men, some of whom are said to be ex-members of the French intelligence services. In 1954, JJG's father left the French Communist Party after they refused to condemn Stalinism. The album Rouge was released in 1993, as you said, so right after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the USSR. You can actually hear the Red Army Choir sing on the album and in the song "Rouge". This song is a tribute to all the people who, like Goldman's father, actually believed in the promise of a better future for workers through Communism. Simple partisans and low-key activists who wanted to build "a new world, you understand, where nothing will ever be the same", but whose ideals were distorted by corrupt politicians in a totalitarian régime. The video represents an old man, clearly JJG's father. He remembers all the friends he made, all the hopes he had, and the conviction that if necessary, he would fight to defend his vision of a better world. The rock bridge is an allegory of revolution. But towards the end, you can see that corruption and totalitarianism take over, which makes the lightbulb burst, because they killed all the hopes he had. That leaves the old man alone with his memories from the past, a past that never will be. Oh, and many French people actually know the rock bridge because it is the tune of a very famous music show on French television, named "Taratata", which has been on TV since 1993. Goldman is a friend of the host and producer, Nagui, and when Nagui asked him for a music for the show, Goldman gave him this part.

In this song, JJ Goldman pays a moving tribute to his father who was an idealistic Communist militant when he was young, in the mid-twentieth century, hoping and fighting for a better world in which there'd be enough work, bread and social rights for all workers in the world to live decently and provide for their families, instead of being exploited by capitalism. A dream that never became true, a nightmare that's only been getting worse and worse.

I sang this song between Russian and French as a chorist 20 years ago with JJ Goldman in a huge Stadium with almost 50K spectators. during Summer in south of France, for a Festival.... I can't forget the emotion me and my musical friends ( doing Solos inspite of Michael and Carole) doing this amazing performance for this crazy song..... But this time Dereck, I keep smiling..... even this was amazing with a symphonic orchestra and JJGoldman..... Thank you again, it's time to sleep in France, and I will keep hearing such amazing songs till I fell asleep Merci beaucoup

Rouge There will be gardens, love and bread Songs, wine, we'll miss nothing There will be sunshine on our foreheads And happiness full our houses It's a new era, revolutionary We will have time to laugh and love each other No more children will go to work There will be schools for everyone Only first classes, more seconds This is the end of the story, the red after the black We will have our sundays We will go see the sea And our brothers of silence And peace on earth But if war breaks out On our too beautiful ideas Might as well die for them Than crawl without a fight There will be gardens, love and bread We will give each other a hand, every less than nothing There will be sunshine on our foreheads And happiness full our houses It's a new era, revolutionary A new world, you understand Nothing will ever be as it was before This is the end of the story, the red after the black

Hi Dereck, I've just become a fan. Love your 'reactions'! I am so thrilled to see you react to the music of Fredericks Goldman Jones. Their music videos are well developed mini films. This is one of the all-time best music trios in France and the francophone world. ROUGE is an AWESOME album featuring the Russian Red Army Choir. All of their albums are the best of French pop music. Jean-Jacques Goldman is a master songwriter, singer, guitarist and performer. His best friend Michael Jones is a stellar guitarist. Michael went on to combine American blues with Galic music. And Carole Fredericks, well here's where it gets interesting. Carole Fredericks is the late baby sister of blues musician Taj Mahal. Yeah, she is an American! She moved to Paris, France in 1979 where she had an extraordinary 22-year career! She started out as a background singer for all of the greats, many of them you've covered like France Gall, Mylene Farmer, Johnny Hallyday, Dalida and Celine Dion. Carole sang in English, French and Wolof (national tribal language of Senegal). The French LOVE her! If you like her voice, you got to check out her solo albums (SPRINGFIELD and COULEURS ET PARFUMS) and a few music videos here (cdfmusiclegacy.com/music). You won't regret it! Here is a link to Carole's website: www.caroledfredericks.com. You'll see a lot more here plus a special duet with Carole and Celine Dion KNOCK ON WOOD: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=celine+dion+and+carole+fredericks+Knock+on+Wood+on+youtube+video&docid=608013270180192255&mid=C198D51C90525EAFC1A7C198D51C90525EAFC1A7&view=detail&FORM=VIRE This video from their debut album , FREDERICKS GOLDMAN JONES will blow your mind...PEUR kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2q1fJJnYpWKers Thank you so much! Merci mille fois (thanks a million) for featuring FREDERICKS GOLDMAN JONES! Hope you will react to songs by CAROLE FREDERICKS like Change, Run Away Love, Qu'est-ce qui t'amene, Respire, Personne ne Saurait with the male group Poetic Lovers. Great songs like J'ai le sang Blues, You Had It Comin' (duet with her brother Taj Mahal), Tender Love.

Hello Dereck, I do love your musical choice of songs... JJ Goldman has been creating many of his songs with his best friend Michael Jones. "Jones" was a huge fantastic Gaeĺic guitarist. Carol Fredericks was a gospel singer from Senegal. That "Rouge" is a dramatical premonition...as you said!

This song is about hope that propelled the beginning of the russian Revolution, and the communist ideology, and the video illustrates the dark reality of it . It's a bitter sweet song about all those hopes for better tomorows betrayed by the communist regime. This old man illustrates that long period of 70 years of communism, a lifetime lived in the Eastern world, that ended not that long ago with the destruction of the Wall in Berlin, . The vision of that man thinking back about all the lives sacrificed (political opponents) , than gathering the old russian soldiers , in an idea of forgiveness, reconciliation

Thank you for listening and react to this beautiful song. I retry to post this message here... Please listen to Jean Jacques Goldman better songs (to my opinion) : "ton autre chemin" (my favorite and the most interesting song to my opinion), and if you want more greatests songs : "fermer les yeux" (so beautiful with fredericks and jones because you like that trio), "puisque tu pars" (my second favorite song), "juste quelques hommes" (really different and interesting song to react), "on y peut rien" (same, really different too, with ancients instruments from middle age), "je l'aime aussi" (awesome dancing song with fredericks and jones as you like), "saches que je" (best love song ever), "frères" (with fredericks and jones with a wonderful chorus), "à quoi tu sers" (a good old song of him), "en passant", "la vie par procuration" (my favorite when i was young, about a grand mother and her loneliness), "Famille" (a song about family), and some songs you can ear and react without any problems like : "long is the road - americain" (just for you ^^ there is two differents songs, one in french and one in english), and again : "tournent les violons" (with old middle age instruments too), "c'est ta chance", "des bouts de moi", "quelque part quelqu'un", "tout mais pas l'indifférence" (one of his firts song), "chanson d'amour" (love song with fredericks and jones), "ensemble" (a wonderful mix of voices), "le coureur" ... He also sing a son of and with Celine dion : "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" which is really cool, with good vibes between these two fabulous artists. Here are my favorite songs from JJG, the most awesome creator that I've never heard in my life. For other artists, you can also react to : "David Hallyday : un homme libre" or "high" (his better song i think). Or, with a great voice : "Richard Cocciante - Le coup de soleil". Or another great song : "Il était une fois - J'ai encore rêvé d'elle" (wonderfull voice too). Another : "Gilbert Montagné - sous le sunlight des tropiques", Or another again : "Demis Roussos - on écrit sur les murs". From "Francis Cabrel", one of his best song is "les murs de poussière". Or from another great artist : "Michel Fugain - Une belle histoire", or "fais comme l'oiseau". Another song who is really interesting to react is : "Michel Sardou - J'accuse". And a girl who have a really interesting voice : "Zaz - On ira". And finally, a song that i really love with french and english text : "Youssou n'dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 seconds" ... ... and even if you don't present them in video, listen to them anyway. It will delight you i'm sure. ;) Thanks for all and for your interest about French music, and it's always a pleasure to see your reactions about all better artists we have in France. (and really sorry for my bad english. ^^)

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Fredericks, Goldman, Jones. This song "Rouge" (Red) released in December 1993 is taken from their second album of the same name, released on November 29. It was ranked No. 18 in the TOP 50 in January 1994. For the single release (2-track CD at the time, a very popular format in the 90's and 2000's), the song was shortened to 4'35. Album version : 6'12. The song evokes communist utopia after the Russian revolution of 1917. It's a calm track, lyrical at the beginning then a hard rock rhythm, guitars which rain down then come to intermingle the Russian choirs of the Red Army. Thanks for your amazing work our Frenchie American mate. 👍🇫🇷
