A review of the Nikon D750 after one year of shooting as a happy enthusiast. How does it perform more than 5 years after it was introduced? How does it hold up to the mirror less competition? Is it still a good camera? Is it still worth buying?

Notice that in the video I say that the virtual horizon is only available in live view (i.e. the LCD). That is true for the full blown version with both tilt and roll. However, you can re-assign the PV button (sits on the front of the camera, top right just below the AF assist illuminator) via the CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU item f3, "asssign preview button" to "viewfinder virtual horizon" which will give you a level indicator in the bottom of the viewfinder, just above the exposure meter. Thank you to Fendrou for sharing this! You can also assign the f2 button to do the same - see the manual page 359.
The book referenced at the end of the video is:

Spot on video! Bought this camera last year for professional architectural and interior photography. I was a little afraid of buying a 5-year old body when mirrorless was all the rage and when rumors of a newer model were floating around. Glad I did! The camera has been a total joy to use and the best low-light performer I’ve worked with. I chose this one over the D810 for two reasons: integrated flash that lets me work wirelessly with my nikon flashes and because of the RAW file size. It’s more suitable for my current computer equipment. I stayed clear of mirrorless because none of its strong points over DSLR’s are key to my work and also because of my lens portfolio.

I didn't think the D780 was enough of an upgrade to consider. Plus, there is no vertical grip available.
@MrToonfish
@MrToonfish 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulconnors2078 Yeah, first "problem" with the D780, no vertical grip for additional battery (a stupid choice from Nikon). Next, the BSI sensor of the Z6/D780 is way better in low light situation as astrophotography than the D750, however the color rendering is completely different, the colors are more "boom in your face" with the Z6/D780, on the D750/D610 the color rendering is nice, smooth, pleasant to the eye with minimal treatment in LR / Capture One. I own 2 x D610 (one I use for a long time, the other still brand new in the box, backup camera if one day I need the replace my beloved D610), with MB-D14 grips, on the D750 with the MB-D16 grip and the Z6 with no grip at all. The Z6 is now sold to buy the Z6II with the extra grip MB-N11... I think I will skip the D780 even it seems to be an excellent camera. I have big bass player hands, I can't use easily a camera without an optional battery grip. I was happy with the Z6 image quality, but unhappy they didn't made a proper grip with shutter release. I have a FUJI X-T3 too, but it's not Nikon ! The D750 today is in Europe around 1200 to 1300€ even with that price tag it is still an EXCELLENT 24 mpix camera. No one really needs more than this, paired with f/2.8 lenses like the 24-70mm and the 14-24mm + a 35mm, 50mm and 85mm prime lenses and you're the king of everything ! :-)

@@MrToonfish Thanks for your comments. I still love my D750 and just recently purchased a D850 instead of transitioning to Nikon mirrorless. The early NIKON Z bodies without a grip, a second card slot and limited battery lives were a turn-off for me. As I do NOT shoot any video, I want the best camera for stilsl and while I don't do astrophotography, the D750's reputation for low light capability (and better than the D850 with its HUGE sensor size) is a great selling and retention point for me. As I said in my first comment, the D780 just was NOT ENOUGH of an upgrade to even consider. Additionally, it is still selling in the USA for $2,399.99 and at that price point is even less attractive for me.

There has never been a more honest review of this camera. You hit every good and “bad” point of this body. I purchased my 2nd Mirrorless (a6400) and adapt my Nikon glass and works great. With the Sony I use that a lot more now because it’s lighter especially with the native mount glass. However, it can’t touch the files the D750 produces no matter what light. I don’t care about video because this is not a camcorder, it’s a camera that offers some video options. If this camera had live view like the Mirrorless did it really would be the perfect stills camera. That and lack of focus points area in the ovf. If those 2 things were better I’d never have to go Mirrorless. This camera will be around for another 5-10 years and still be used. It’s just to good for what it is.

I’ve had the D750 for 6 years and love most everything about this camera. The raw images from the camera are exquisite and offer tremendous latitude. You are very right this camera can see in the dark. The autofocus was adopted from the D810, but improved upon to where it can almost focus in the dark. Live view of this camera as with all Nikon DSLRs except the D780 leaves much to be desired. The colors are vibrant, real, and elevate this camera above Canon and Sony. I recently purchased a Z7II, but plan to keep shooting the D750. The Nikon mirrorless lenses are expensive, but on a completely different level.

I just picked up a new d750 a couple of days ago after a decade shooting a d7000 as my main camera. I am really happy with it so far. The difference in the images is very noticeable, particularly when shooting my 50mm at 1.8. I really struggled with sharpness on the d7000 the last few years, and wondered if my lens was off. But the same lens on the d750 shows it was n't the lens, and happily, it wasn't the photographer either! Your videos on the d750 were very helpful in my decision to choose this camera as my first full frame dslr. Thank you!

The D750 has the multi cam 3500 AF module, whilst the D7000 has the 4800. The 4800 was known for it's issues, which Nikon pretty much ignored just like they tried to ignore the D600 mirror assembly issue. The MC 4800 did not perform very well in low light. Don't get me wrong, I loved my D7000 sensor. I think it's one of the best APS-C sensors ever made. But that AF system was a pig.

@@pspox9 There were some initial problems with the location of the AF sensors and the shutter. Very well done. I bought mine a year ago. My sister-in-law has had one for some time and I tried to get her to sale me hers, but she is not interested in upgrading, ... so I bought the camera on sale with the 24-120 VR lens. I have mostly Nikon D lenses, which, of course, work perfectly on this camera. The reasons for purchase were all the points you made, including the negatives which did not outweigh what you get for the money - it’s an outstanding deal, unless you are enamored of video work. For me, I can do quick video with my phone and that’s fine - but I may explore the D750 for some video. I’m not a pro. I don’t sell my pictures. I did add a very affordable Fuji X100T camera used camera this year, ... and I’m happy with the combination of my Nikon kit and the X100T. People talk about the difference in size of mirrorless, but, for me the D750 is not that much bigger than a mirrorless camera, when you start mounting lenses. The big difference in size is mostly seen when a small prime is mounted, ... and even there I don’t see the difference. That being said, the 24-120 lens, with the D750 is heavier than I would want in some situations. However, with a prime 24, 35, 50 on the camera, ... weight isn’t a “factor” in my experience. In my world, ... I have the fuji x100T for carry-around, grab-and-go, ... and the Nikon for a more serious photography effort (event, “serious” sight-seeing, macro, etc.). I’ve shot Leica M3 with 3 lenses in the past, as well as SLR. My current set up pulls together my experiences in some ways and brings versatility at a justifiable price for an enthusiast. I also still have my Nikon D80 with 2.8 normal zoom which I will often grab for trips. If it gets damaged, or dies, ... it will have still been a wonderful piece of equipment that documented do many wonderful moments in my life. Again, ... good review!

Thank you Clinton, I think you and I see many things exactly the same way (I am also a serious enthusiast - knocking on the door to being pro, but lack the confidence and experience). My beloved Fuji Xt3 with a 56mm 1.2 lens and a battery grip weighs exactly the same as my Nikon D750 with a 24-70 lens (the difference is 3 grams!). So APS-C is only lighter if you stay clear of the super fast lenses (i.e. f/2 or slower), otherwise you quickly end up with the same weight for both systems. I have the fuji XT20 and use it like I read you use the X100T, and I use the Sony RX100 mark 3 when I am on my bike and compact/light is key (they are now at mark 7 - but I have no need for the upgrades). All the best!

I agree with your opinion in all the aspects. This camera is still a jewel. Bought mine in 2015, it's still my workhorse. I'm not in video stuff, so as you pointed out for stills it's a FANTASTIC camera. Accessing to the entire AF (D too) Nikon lens assortment is invaluable. Now with this mirrorless trend very good opportunities can be found on 2nd hand market. And some of the old D lenses have a unique character, if you're not a pixel peeper. The colours.. are just fantastic. I just found a 50 1.4 D for something like 150 euro, like new. The images I get with it are fascinating. Same for the 180 2.8D. The only thing I really miss is 1/8000 sec but I'm waiting the rumoured D760 or what it will be and I'll go for it. Merry Christmas!
@alexverbeke2228
@alexverbeke2228 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, I use mine with some AF-D lenses (24 f/2.8, 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8) and even pixel-peepers can enjoy'em in most cases. Stopping down the 24mm to f/4 and more give very good quality, the 35mm is more demanding and is really good at f/5.6-f/8, the 50mm is just awesome from f/2.8 to f/11 and the 85mm is already good at f/1.8. I don't have the 180 f/2.8D but the AI-S, so fully manual, and f/4 is already good with wonderful rendering, so does the 55mm f/2.8 micro. Even an old 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D still delivers good quality, at least between 28 and 85mm, 105mm is more blurry but macro capability between 50 and 105mm with a 1:2 ratio is great. If the only really thing you miss is 1/8000s it's not a big deal, how many times you really need it? AF is fast, sensible, body is pretty light and good handheld, the sensor is still really good with good dynamic and ISO performance, OVF is clear...I think IMO the only real issue is that, even if the tilt screen is great, the AF performance in liveview mode is too slow to be useful in most cases. The D780 should have the 24MP BSI Z6 sensor, maybe with the Z6 AF, so it could be a nice improvement for liveview mode.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 4 жыл бұрын
Agree to your live view remarks - I find it in all aspects to be so slow that I simply don't use it. Tony Northrup has just released a video with the D780 specs and it looks like IBIS is not part of the deal. And that you cannot put a battery grip on the D780. So I will hold on to my D750...
@alexverbeke2228
@alexverbeke2228 4 жыл бұрын
@@frederikboving Funny, I was just watching T&N video ^^. Rumors didn't talk about IBIS, so I didn't expect it (seems like it will be only in the D6...just wonder why they didn't try to make it on the 46MP of the D850?) but in liveview mode the D780 will have the same number of AF points than the Z6 so it could be also the same performance, good for videos and for stills in some situations, even if I think Nikon should have done it since a loooooong time, most videasts have just switched to Canon DPAF and then to Panasonic or Sony and they won't go back to DSLR.

@@alexverbeke2228 Yep, Nikon lost me for video. Use Fujifilm XT3 now for video, so I match your description perfectly. No value in a Nikon D780 with better video specs for me :-). But in a low light (stills) situation, I will reach for my D750 all day long.

@@frederikboving I do worse, panasonic GX9 for videos (but I don't make that much videos, BTW, it's more for everyday use) and now D850 for stills so my D750 stays in the bag ^^. Just thinking "if I accept to carry a big DSLR for the best quality, why not THE best DSLR" and I found one at the same price the D780 will be launch (about 2000$), some old lenses like my 180 AI-S are also easier to use with the focus peaking (once again, why Nikon didn't add this earlier, it's also useful for videos!). Northrup wonders if the D780 will kill the Z-mount, I don't think so, there is still a lot of DSLR users who don't want to switch and Nikon didn't release an "entry-level" FF DSLR for many years (since the D750, precisely, 6 years ago), so their targets are not new Z-mount users, those have already bought S-lenses that won't fit on a DSLR anyway and those who could be interested by this D780 are probably not interested by the Z-mount currently, otherwise they would already have a Z6/Z7.

Thank you, great video and very timely. I have a Nikon D500 and was considering purchasing a D750 to have a FF also. Do you think that I would gain very much by adding the D750 to collection or would it be duplicating the D500: which I like a lot? Thank you..

Hi John, super question! Can I ask what attracts you to FF? When I upgraded from D5600/D7500 to D750 it was for 2 reasons (1) curiosity and (2) I had to see the improvement for myself. Retrospectively I can say that the difference is not as big as you may think. And it is expensive to switch all your glass! Only some glass from APS-C can be used on FF and often with some vignetting, although the F-mount is the same and the lens hence fits fine irrespective of sensor size. The D500 is - according to all what I have read about it - a FANTASTIC camera, especially for sports and wildlife. The AF system is from the D5, and that says it all. In this regard the D500 beats the D750 by far. The D750 however is a FF sensor and in low light conditions it performs exceptionally well, also when it comes to focus - IMO it sees in the dark! So the attractiveness of the D750 depends on what you shoot as I see it. Sports and wildlife - stay with the D500. Photographer on a budget? - Stay with the D500. Event and portrait and landscape photographer? The D750 could be you upgrade, but be prepared to invest in glass. And carry more heavy glass! I knew when I upgraded that if I did not try FF, that itch or uncertainty or curiosity would stay with me forever. So to get some peace of mind, I upgraded. Rational? Nope. Necessary? Nope. But I am glad I did. I also have a Fuji X-T3 and it performs fantastic - I never think about that it is APS-C. That said, I am glad I have my D750 workhorse. I love that I can hear the shutter working. I love that I can buy tons of vintage glass on abudget. I love that the autofocus is so noisy that the birds take off, scared stiff by the sound of it. I love that the batteries last forever. I enjoy the ergonomics every day. So there are many other good reasons to buy a D750 than the FF factor. More confused now? Please let me know. Happy to help if I can. Take care!

Hi, I have had the pleasure of owning a D7500, but unfortunately salt water killed that camera. Sad story. I was very pleased with the IQ of the D7500 until the accident, and I think some of the good stuff that came out of the D7500 was because of the EXPEED processor that sits in that camera, but I have no evidence to support it. The D7500 ergonomics however are not optimal - the "ears" for the camera strap bugged me senseless. You can see my videos on the D7500 here: kzbin.info/aero/PLPjooVCTLG90eAdpE0ZTRcvHORKY2YEYB including a walk through of the ergonomics. I am very happy with the Fujifilm cameras, and I think part of the secret to the great pictures that come out of the Fuji are that they literally have no bad lenses - they only have good and very good. Even their kit lens is - although not perfect - far better than the average kit lens. So yes, my overall impression is that the Fujifilm APSC cameras produce better pictures simply because of the quality of their glass. This, in combination with some filters that produce very clean looking pictures especially in B&W, makes shooting with Fuji a somewhat different experience. And then I only have lenses for Fuji with all the modern comfort (vibration reduction and super silent focus motors built into the lens) and that adds to the ease of using the Fujifilm lineup. But I will say that the ergonomics is far from good. The D750 is superior in this regard. And battery life on a mirrorless is horrible, so you end up buying a grip with room for more batteries, and then you quickly end up with a APSC camera that is as heavy as a full frame DSLR. My Fuji XT3 with battery grip and a 56mm lens is as heavy as my Nikon D750 with a 35-70 lens. So don't buy APSC mirrorless in the hope that it is smaller and lighter! Hope this helps. Happy to elaborate. :-D

@@frederikboving Any APS-C gear including Fuji is much lighter overall when shooting with big lenses. This is where full frame glass gets really bulky and very heavy. The same also when carrying a bag of several any size lenses, full frame will always be heavier than comparative focal length APS-C glass.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
@@christianpetersen1782 I agree Christian! The point I was trying to make was that even if you buy a APS-C camera, it is not necessarily a light combo. I owned the Fuji X-T3 with a fast lens, plus camera grip and a few extra batteries in the grip, and the whole package actually became quite heavy. That in combination with the fact that the XT3 is a compact camera body (less volume than a DSLR) means that it to me felt quite heavy and "dense". So I ended up selling it, and hold on to my XT20 instead without a grip etc. It works much better as a "three finger camera" than the XT3 if you ask me. Hope this clarifies.

Hi Mike, that is a very good question! They are both great cameras. I have owned them both - the D7500 I unfortunately bricked via a salt water accident. But I loved the D7500, although the ergonomics was not the best (the "ears" for the camera strap annoyed me a great deal! - you can see the details here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2aTn2iaqtukmMU). In theory the D750 is the best low light performer due to FF, but I remember being super impressed by the low light performance of the D7500 and the ISO range of the D7500 is impressive. I think it has to do with the very modern EXPEED CPU that sits in the D7500. I remember visiting the Guiness brewery and taking some pictures in a very dark environment - and they came out great! Choosing between APS-C and FF is not easy, you may get some inspiration here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoOrcp1urr-Ur5o - and then finally I always recommend the camera decision homepage, always good to visit: cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D750-vs-Nikon-D7500. Sorry this is not really an answer but more a list of more information to digest, but it is not an easy choice to make. Also because you may grow as a photographer and you could find yourself growing out of the D7500 with a lot of DX glass you then have to sell. So also take into the equation that your preferences and ambitions may change over time. However, one thing is certain, if weight is important to you, I think the D7500 with DX glass looks like the one for you. FX glass is HEAVY....

Hi Chocola En pupies, the D750 is a workhorse for many wedding photographers, and I think you will find it is a really good "jack of all trades" camera body that will serve you well in different situations. Unfortunately I am no expert in the 24-124 lens, but Ken Rockwell says: "The 24-120mm f/4 VR is a great lens, doing most things very well in a very practical package." He is usually spot on. DPreview are of the same opinion: "we love the 24-120mm for its versatility and value for the money.". So it sounds like a good lens! With regards to going pro, I think it is a question of self confidence and less about the gear. So if you believe you have the know how and competence to meet the expectations of your clients, then I think you are ready to go pro. Or at least start shooting pro "on the side" of your regular job, while you build your name and reputation. All the best!

Hi! I would wait just a little bit investing in a D750. Now the D780 is out, I would wait and see if the price on the D750 drops when the D780 has been out for a while. Choosing between the D750 and mirrorless APS-C cameras is not easy. All the cameras you mention are good cameras. If small size and weight is important to you, then the APS-C cameras has an advantage as the smaller surface of the sensor also gives smaller glass and hence less weight. Also, if shooting silently is important to you, then the mirrorless APS-C is the one to go for. The D750 is very noisy (mirror flicking) and that also goes for the AF motor if you use the motor built into the camera - you can very clearly hear the motor working and it will be picked up by a microphone close to the camera when shooting video. And the mirrorless cameras have and advantage in "what you see is what you get" in the viewfinder. On the other hand, the D750 although large and chunky has very good ergonomics, the picture that come out of it are stellar, you get the benefits of full frame in term of low light performance and bokeh, one battery lasts a full day (in my case) and last but not least, you get access to a LOT of lenses you can get cheap used via e-bay or amazon, so you can get some stellar glass without breaking the bank. But with a good adapter, you can also use this on the mirrorless camera... Hope this helps a bit. Otherwise, try visit my blog: There may be some articles you find useful: frederikboving.com/category/guidance/

I’m wondering is it still worth to buy this camera considering 5 years old?. The concern I have is from D750 is - 1. Slower AF, 2. Shutter speed 1/4000 which is half the D780/Z6ii/Z5. Are these show stopper for D750?. Purpose of buying a camera is for taking Portraits, Still, Landscape, Bird, Product photography (learning) and of course my kids. It would be really great if you throw some lights on my concern to make a wise decision.... other options I have considered is Nikon D780 with one of the lens and Z6ii with the kit lens... apart from D780 and Z6ii I have been suggesting to go with D850 with the kit lens. Hi, choosing between the Z6, D750 and D780 is not easy. Nikon gives us more options than ever. The first thing to consider is if you are into mirrorless or DSLRs - I have a blog post that gives some pros and cons of each of these options: frederikboving.com/is-mirrorless-cameras-better-than-dslrs/ When it comes to choosing an enthusiast Nikon camera body, then this is not easy either. In this blog post I have tried to give an overview of the different options from Nikon and how I see them: frederikboving.com/which-enthusiast-nikon-dslr-to-choose/ And finally, choosing specifically between Z6, D780 and D750 - here I have given my thoughts on the challenges choosing between the 3: frederikboving.com/which-nikon-camera-body-to-choose-in-the-24mp-range/ With regards to the 1/4000 vs 1/8000, I would say that it is only an issue if you are shooting in very bright conditions and you want to shoot wide open (to maintain a shallow DOF), and even then an ND filter can help you out. So no, I would not consider that a showstopper, but of course 1/8000 is always nice to have as an option.

It is a weather sealed professional body with dual UHS II slots. The battery life is solid. The optional grip is nice for maximizing grip comfort, but it’s $270 and does nothing but holds batteries. The only reason I sold it was because I specifically wanted a DSLR. I loved the Z5 and at $1300CAD its a no brainer. The only drag is Nikon’s almost non existent native lens array. The AF was satisfactory, but it is nowhere near the performance level of high end camera. The eye AF was completely underwhelming, there simply aren’t enough AF points on the sensor. Also the camera is soooo quiet! Oh, and it shoots video, but it’s super basic, so it’s a decent vlog-level video camera at best. It’s good looking, but limited

My "problem" with the D750 is that the screwdriver focus is noisy, so the microphone pics up the focus sounds. The fix is of course a lens with (more silent) built in focus motor, but to avoid that investment I simply shoot video with my XT3. If you have not seen it, I can recommend this video showing what the D750 video wise is capable of: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYSmh4WplrOra8U

frederikboving ....Hey thanks, Sir for that Heart ❤️. So what this is implying is IF you are a content creator, you have to consider your audience and the means by which they are receiving your content. And we certainly want the early adopters and the wealth-laden, blessed-with-a-mansion, and large media room souls to keep buying 4K equipment and upgrading, upgrading, so WE can purchase the the refurbished or used taken-care-of-editions of 4K whatever on EBay, and from the back warehouse at B&H.

@@jamescollins1272 Hi James, yep! Let the front runners take the bleeding edge - and leave the rest of us to shoot photography on a budget with gear that was good enough for the pros a few years back. I think we get the best of both worlds that way :-D

And if by chance you want to go to any location on the globe 🌎 with 5, 10 or beyond years-aged Camera Equipment, and then have the audacity to shoot stunning scenes, actions, landscapes, etc. any of which just happens to make just the right amount of money, which would make those edge-bleeding Professional Photographers really jealous, you have my full permission.

There probably still is lots of mileage in the camera - but it is always a risk buying used. I would look to see how the general condition of the camera is - does it look bruised like it has rolled down a mountain side? Or did the owner take good care of it?

Hi Nick, my workhorse is the 35-70mm 2.8D. It is a great lens and the AF continues to impress me - I simply cannot understand that something based on a mechanical setup with the AF motor in the camera bodycan work that well! I also love my 55mm 1.4D, the Tokina 100mm, the Nikkor 135mm 2.8D (a true tunnel of glass!) and a few Pentax lenses (radioactive!). You can find many of these lenses in this playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLPjooVCTLG920cfFIaNGqxEz5nzhRhtA3 All the best :-D

@@frederikboving you pronounce ZZ Top as zee zee top because the band is American and so it is up them how it's pronounced. However in the case of the camera it's definitely zed. Also it's a Nikon like sit, kit, not as in site or kite. Pronouncing Z wrongly as in zee is a special concession to Americans because they are incapable of getting it right and no other English speakers are allowed to pronounce things so badly. It's a rule set by the Queen.

Yes, it’s not just the British that pronounce “z” as “zed”. The vast majority of the English-speaking world does this. The primary exception, of course, is in the United States where “z” is pronounced “zee”. They also pronounce "Nikon" as "Naikon" for some reason - some even pronounce "Nikkor" as "Naikor".
