At 13:49; The top contact is for an outside camera flash cable. The bottom is for remote control cable. Some cameras can also use it for a GPS unit. I don't know if the D700 can take it, so check it out. And on 35:25, it's a marker where the sensor is. Useful for close-up pictures. To calculate magnification scale for example. Best camera wishes Liselotte in Karlstad, Sweden.

That sensor plane mark is also where focus distance is calculated. In other words, when a lens gives a close focus of say 0.2 meters that is where the 0.2 meters is measured to. A lot of people think the close focus of the lens is the same as working distance. It is not.

Amazing series of tutorials. Just acquired second-hand D700 and your lessons are Gold-Mine, concise, well structured and carefully planned. p.s. At first i have tried going trough D700 manual, it has all necessary details but it is a rather thick booklet.

Nikon has made a good manual for the D700 in english and if you google it you can find a PDF version to download. Press Ctrl-F to open a search window and just type in what you are looking for. I know that many don't like to read manuals, but if you get fed up watching videos, this could be an alternative! Enjoy!

Quite a comprehensive guide! A little elementary yet useful video. I was able to purchase this gem of a camera in "good" condition from a trusted source just yesterday (Oct 2021) and it should come to me on Monday! It will be my first full frame camera and I feel grateful to find one of these in good condition. They are rare to find anymore.

The D700 and the D500 are the best Nikon cameras. I love the features of both but the D700 has all the common controls available as buttons or dials without having to go into the menus. Both cameras have features only found on professional cameras. They are Nikon legends and well worth the attention they get.

Fredrik, I have tried to set up the D700 for back button focus. It seems that the AF-ON button is indeed focusing the camera. However, it still focuses when I push the shutter release button halfway. That seems to defeat the purpose of BBF. Do you have any ideas on how to eliminated the focus function from the shutter release button?
@frederikboving
@frederikboving Жыл бұрын
@@vzshadow1 I asked chat GPT and this is the answer I got: "On the Nikon D700 camera, the focus function is typically assigned to the shutter release button by default. However, if you wish to eliminate the focus function from the shutter release button and use a separate button for focusing, you can change this setting through the camera's custom settings menu. Here's a general outline of the steps to follow: Press the Menu button on your Nikon D700 camera. Navigate to the Custom Settings menu (represented by a pencil icon). Within the Custom Settings menu, locate the Autofocus (AF) section. Look for an option called "AF activation" or "AF-ON button." Select this option to access the AF activation settings. Within the AF activation settings, you'll find different options for assigning autofocus activation to different buttons. Choose the desired button (e.g., AE-L/AF-L button or another button of your preference) to assign autofocus activation. Save the changes and exit the menu. By assigning the autofocus activation to a different button, the focus function will no longer be linked to the shutter release button. Instead, you will need to use the newly assigned button to initiate autofocus. Please note that the exact terminology and menu structure may vary slightly depending on the firmware version of your Nikon D700 camera. It's recommended to consult the camera's manual or refer to Nikon's official documentation for more specific instructions based on your camera's firmware version." Hope this helps.

Switching from auto ISO to manual and back through a menu is an annoying feature about this camera and also my D7000. Well done Frederik. Excellent delivery and perfect timing as I just bought a D700 with a genuine battery grip for Eur300 together with the original boxes and all. It has 69K in terms of shutter count but as i was negotiating to buy the camera, I came across your videos and immediately clicked the 'subscribe' button. I own a Z6, Z6ii (just purchased it last week) a D850, a D4s and a D7200. The D700 was on my wish list as I've been reading about it's particular characteristics.. which through your videos I now somehow feel better about my purchase... and look forward to use it more often than not! I also had the DK-17 available and just ordered the DK-19 as I feel it's a 'must-have' for all Nikon pro cameras (have the Dk-19 on my D850 and D4s). Keep up the great work!

Thank you Andre, very kind of you! Can I ask you what you think of the Z6 relative to the Nikon DSLR lineup you also have? I am considering the Z6 (pure GAS) but lack a "killer" argument. Right now, I need a new camera, like a fish needs a bicycle.
@andre_micallef
@andre_micallef 4 жыл бұрын
@@frederikboving how funny! Yes I know the feeling.... re GAS :) rest assured that the Z6 are great when it comes to vintage lenses. This is in view of focus peaking and IBIS which simplifies the shooting experience and you get VR on 30 year old lenses and more... so yes... I’d go for a Z6 for sure... another thing which I find super useful in the Z6 and D850 (which is missing in the D700 and D4s) is highlight weighted metering which mode achieves fantastic results for concert photography. I look forward to more content. Keep well!
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 4 жыл бұрын
@@andre_micallef Thank you Andre! Matthias Burling (Swedish photographer) also speaks very warmly of the highlight weighted metering, so I am tempted by the Z6 also for that reason. Hmm. The D700 with its Panasonic sensor was designed so that you didn't need to do much post processing. I know portrait photographers who shoot raw with it and the images are almost good enough as they are. But when you combine the D700 and AIS and AF-D prime lenses with it, then magic happens. This was the camera that Nikon designed to seriously convert rusted on film shooters to digital. It took the D4S and D850 to come close to its quality output.

I got the D700 last year when my D300 died after 14 year use. This year I got a D800E. I'm saving for a used D850 and AFS 24-70mmF2.8 E VR , AFS 70mm-200mmF2.8 E VR and an used AFS 400mm2.8 G VR with a 1.4*TC. Some of my old prime lenses will be soft on the D850. I have some problem focusing a Zeiss Planar 50mmF1.4 on the D700 and I have put a AFS 28mmF1.4 E on it but I'm testing the D800 first.

@@frederikboving It’s a simple choice, I'm 3 years from retirement and after that I cannot afford putting allot of money into new S-lenses. I can afford to upgrade to a Z8 camera with FTZ converter if it’s a good landscape camera. So getting a used D850 will probably give me 14 years of use. I have a D800E and a D700 today but they are old and I cannot trust them to function for 14 more years. So I’m upgrading during the next 5 years to an AFS 24-70mmF2.8 E VR and an AFS 70-200mmF2.8 E VR. Also I will get a 2nd hand AFS 400mmF2.8 G VR with a 1.4*TC III. My D300 broke down after 14 years of use and I got the D700 as a replacement last year but I was aiming for a D800E but I could not find it then so I got one this summer. I only have Zeiss manual prime lenses and Nikon primes, some with old screw drive AF as an AF 85mmF1.8 D and an AF 300mmF2.8 IF ED, the later will be replaced with a 400mm but I think I keep the 300mm also.. I still learning to use the D700 and its good to have it as a backup camera.

@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomaseriksson6256 Ok, got it. Sounds like a plan. The Northrups mention that the specs for the Z8 are not yet public, but they are looking very much forward to the Z8 as the name indicates it is the ML replacement for the legendary D850. When you have a lot of F-mount glass, you may want to consider the D780 as it gives the most modern camera for the F-mount glass (www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d780-review). Personally, I really like the D750 as it is a camera that just gets the job done and does not talk back. But of course neither the D780 nor the D750 will give you the resolution you have with the D800E, and if that is key, then the D850 or the Z80 is the viable options. Notice that the FTZ adapter is not the land of milk and honey, and that using it with a 400mm lens may feel a bit "wobbly" if you ask me. /frederik

@@frederikbovingI'm used to the D300, D700 and D800E so D850 should be a god fit. The D850 is low in Mpix but I'm not sure how much I need. The Z8 will be expensive and it must be better than the D850 for landscape if I shall get it I rather put the money in a lens. I have a relative that use Z6ii+FTZ adapter+ AFS 200-500mmF5.6 E VR for bird photo since a year back. She switches from a D3 to Z6ii. The lens is heavy but it works for her and she is satisfied with the replacement. After thinking about what I shall get as a 200-500mmF5.6 E VR, a 500mmF5.6 E VR or an old 400mmF2.8 G VR with a tele converter I decided on the more expensive 400mm because I'm often take pictures at low light in woodlands and not so much at the bright sea. I think that I need a compact camera also so I attach a norm Zoom 18-55mm to a Fuji X-Pro 1 to replace my Panasonic LX5 but it has not worked yet as expected. I also have a Fuji X-T1 with 55-200mm that I use for wildlife photo but I hate that camera.

@@thomaseriksson6256 The D850 is low in Mpix - I trust that was a typo? (46 Mpix). I think the speed argument for the 400mm makes a lot of sense to me although moderns sensors can be ISO stressed quite a lot before they add grain to the images. Yep, I am not a Fuji fanboy either. Hey awesome Video.. thank you a lot!! Quick question though. I'm doing a long planned safari soon and somebody lend me their Nikon D700 and I'm an absolute beginner in photography. What settings do you recommend me using (mostly gonna take photos outdoors obviously)? Also is the "fine" quality setting sufficient or would you advise me to use raw? And it only came with a 8gb sd card so I might get another one since raw only allows me to take like 250 pictures.
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you don't do much editing of your images then RAW is not necessary. In RAW format the camera stores much more information per pixel and that gives you lots of options for e.g. saving details from dark or blown-out parts of the image, working with the colors etc. In JPG it is more difficult to work with the image in post, you quickly find that you run out of options - the image is "locked" to certain settings and you don't have much headroom to work with. So it depends on how much you want to edit. I recently shot a lot of JPGS because Tour de France came to Copenhagen, and I photographed the riders with a fast release (bursts) to see if I could get just one image that was OK in a series of shorts. And JPG worked just fine. And many say that the JPGS that the D700 produces are absolutely beautiful. Hope this helps! All the best!

Luckily ill be able to transfer the fotos to my harddrive each evening to make space on the sd again.

if i have worked things out correctly it is a cf card, but an unusually large one so I probably have a chance of finding one locally. thanks for inspiring my purchase looking at it i immediately fell in love with the controls. my first thought was this was all designed by a camera user I chose my d7200 because it had more direct access buttons in a better layout but the 700 makes the 7200 look clumsy and broken initially i though it was lighter than expected, years of using a f3 with motor drive perhaps, then I found the brick that masquerades as the battery and with that in the weight became wonderful thank you for inspiring me as soon as I got my 70-200 2.8D I realized that my dwindling interest was the gear i was using was the problem, I put it on my 7200 and took several photos from my usual chair in the lounge, no masterpieces but suddenly I was much more like the photographer i used to be so thank you for reviving my hobby. next pension pay is 2 days away and on that day I'll be off to town to see if I can buy a suitable card, even considering buying a second d700 not that I can really afford that, but love is irrational

Both are great cameras. There are millions of photographers working with both cameras every day, and I think they are happy with their choice. I have noticed that portrait photographers seem to prefer Canon, and landscape photographers prefer Nikon, but it is in no way a scientific observation. I think the trick is to go wholeheartedly with whatever you choose and not look back at all. And instead focus your energy on producing some great images, which can be achieved with both cameras IMHO.

The D700 is to me more an artistic camera that I use when I want pictures to look like paintings or b&w with lots of pop. The D700 has 12mp and if you want to crop a lot e.g. if you shoot small birds, then the d750 allows you to crop more. Very informative video! One of the best ones I ever saw. I bought a used D700 with just 10000 shutter count last year; sadly now there is problem with aperture beyond maximum on all my lenses and it gives a Err in LCD. It is a electromagnetic aperture lever issue and cost a hreat-breaking €400 by Nikon Germany. Don't know if I should get it repaired or buy a used body again. What do you say?
@frederikboving
@frederikboving 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! A shutter count of 10t is very low, so you have a camera with much "mileage" left in it. However, the issue you report seems serious and EUR 400 is what a "new" D700 would cost you on e-bay. So I repairing the old one is almost the same as buying another. Do you have a good feeling that your current camera is solid and the issue with the aperture is a one-off case? Or do you more have a feeling that the issue is the first in a series, just like when you start repairing an old car, then the bills just keep coming? You run the risk that your D700 will give you new issues down the road, although it is known for its solid built quality. So, in short, though call! (I am surprised that Nikon Germany has offered to repair it - my understanding is that all support for the D700 by Nikon had stopped, but apparently not.)

Hi William, I am not sure what the criteria for being a good waterfall camera actually is? It does have a bulb mode to allow you to leave the shutter open for a very long time, but most DSLRs do. It is also big and heavy to secure it is not moved that easily, but I guess the tripod you are using is just as if not more important than the weight of the camera. In terms of image quality, this camera gets a lot of praise for its color rendition and skin toning, but not sure how vital that is for waterfall shooting. Hi, sorry, no specific experience with the Tamron lens. I have struggled with non-Nikon flashes on the D700 that works on more modern cameras like the D750.
