Very useful video, thanks. The 9900 is really nice. Only just got it, so really glad I found this. Still learning about the features. Found today I could display the internal SWR (or power etc) by tinkering with the menu. Since my new SWR was not working I was not happy about setting up the gain master (5/8). According to the internal SWR it is bang on 1.0 which is probably over generous, but at least it is in the right range. Thanks again.

Thanks Glenn. You should hopefully get some good DX if your near the coast. Keep an ear on and around 27.555 USB. Personally on the 9900 i would try the standard mic before upgrade as they are pretty good.

Hi Fred several months ago you gave me some great advice and just got round to ordering one of these after driving around on a 4w crt millennium and not getting out. Hi. Ive got 2 Alinco HF radios. They are a little bit more involved than a CB but you can program the CB channels into their memories.

They can be slightly off freq when started from stone cold (as the 6900). Once they warm up they normally are ok.

One thing I found to be cost today :) Was playing with some Hz examples you gave - manually tuning them in using the push knob and rotating. Did that on band A. Did not realise by default that the new frequency is saved, even after turning off and on again. So I had to go back and repair Channel 19 (which was set to the international SSB calling frequency). So I guess I need to use the mem function, or just go to one of the bands I cannot use and overwrite a few of the channels. Is that what you do?

Hi been looking at this Radio and the SS6900N to put in my VW transporter camper van this one cost a bit more but also looks a bit smaller which is maybe better in the van how do you think it will work with a Avanti Moonraker 4 mobile on a mag mount as that what i currently have on the roof of my campervan or would you recommend a better Mobile Antenna. Both the 6900n and 9900 (6666) are fine radio's. The 6900n is prob easier to use and runs cooler. I dont know the Avanti but you can only try it. Sirio 4000 or 5000 are popular choices.

You can press the channel button to select the tuning step. 1-10-100 etc and then just tune like a manual radio.

Nice one Fred. I note what you say about having a suitable power supply for these more powerful radios. However, if I were to get one I'd be using it in a car (not being in a suitable location to be home based), so would runing it from the 12v accessory socket in my car pose any problems?

Some people do run these from the 12v aux socket and say they are fine. Personally i would not. You would need to check the max amp draw allowed for the aux socket. Many are just 10 amp and that will be too low for the 9900.

I installed mine about a month ago and I never hear anyone talking. There was to instances where I somewhat heard some one for like 20 seconds or so. Daft question by me and I should know better really. ss9900v4 or ss7900v turbo..? Which would you recommend for a beginner first buy? This is gonna have to last me unfortunately and don't want to keep upgrading because of expense ( famous last words 😁).. not for awhile anyway. I've actually got a foundation licence and took it on-line during first lockdown... unfortunately I only had chance to go to 1 club meeting the week before lockdown and then due to my local ham club being closedd for months, I never got around to purchasing any equipment and lost interest ( didn't really lose interested, just had far too many other hobbies at time.. ADHD.). The 9900 is a GREAT skip radio due to its high power on USB but its the hardest to learn how to use. The 7900 has a very nice display and better controls but the raw power. Something in between would be the Alinco DX10 which is also a fine radio.

Hi Frank. Yes you can turn on the digital SWR meter on the 9900 and it will display the swr when you key up. Personally i prefer a old fashioned meter in circuit as they are quite cheap.

I can see there is activity on usb but can't here them. Is that my antenna?. Do you agree with my thoughts, it's been 40 years since I used one. Well done on the 9900. Normally Knights tune one band to the UK 40 FM freqs and the rest are spread from 26-29 Mhz. Sadly your not going to get strong signals from a 3 ft antenna . The 5000 will work well though. Rem you can always tune the radio man by pressing the main tuning knob and then increasing the freqs 10 khz etc. Just dont do that on the UK band as the radio will rem the last freq you tuned and bugger the presets.

I think its all on there, 10,11,and 12. Sometimes you have to put the UK FM channels on there yourself. Maybe just ask them if it comes with UK FM. If not ask them to put them on it, if they don't its not that difficult to do it yourself

I think Pete is right. The newer version has expanded freq but still covers 11 meters. The 40 UK FM band is normally pre programmed in Band A but i guess an email to check before buying would not hurt. All the best.

Knights did mine for combined CB and ham. On mine, Band A is the UK40. Band D is Mids Band E is FB with 27.555 Band F covers 10 metres up to 28.390 Band G Covers 28.400 to 28.790 Band J is 29.6 upwards. Hi Fred Any Ideas ? Something strange going on with my 9900 when you switch from channel to frequency the frequency changes on the control knob and when you switch back to channel instead of moving the channel as well like it used to it stays on that channel?in channel mode you can change channel. switch to frequency its changing the frequency instead of moving to the presets if you push the button in to change as you usually would it still does that but its not locked on the presets must be something in the menu that has altered I think. also I get a small letter r in the corner is this something to do with the receive maybe ?

The 9900 has its quirks. Ive also had issues where switching into mode channel on channel 19 and flicking up does not change the freq but ends up re programming all the flicked channels to Ch19. You then have to re program them. Its a little bit of an odd radio. Guess its not really a channel radio like the 6900N.

Question. This is a 10 meter radio with CB Frequencies. FCC set the CB Band at 4 watts. Does this unit drop the CB Band down to 4 watts and is this legal in the US?.

You can turn down the RF power to 4 watts and below. However here in he UK the radio would still not be type approved for use on 11m. I would imagine the same rule applies in the US.

Totally fine to use the built in SWR meter. People tend to prefer a seperate meter as it can be easier to use.

cuckoojack: The built-in SWR meter in this radio is very accurate (unlike some others). I tested / compared it with my antenna analyzer and the results were almost identical, just a few small differences on the highest & lowest frequencies.

The mem and store channels are odd on this radio. If you save a memory it will be there but if you then change freq it will not rem the prev setting. In a nutshell when on your mem channels dont change any freq or settings.

How low can you run the tx power on fm? I have a zetagi bv131 tube rf amplifier, and this runs very fine at 1 to 4 watts input. In general, i don't like to push the finals in a radio that much. Maybe it is better to connect a "burner" between radio and antenna, and run the radio at the lowest power?🤔

Lowest power setting on the 9900 is around 1 watt.

You could simply change every channel on the bands you dont want to a generic freq like 28000 KHz. To delete them i guess you would need to connect to a PC find the software and use the USB cable.

@@CB-RADIO-UK Fred a quick update, I got the programming cable and you can remove bands by assigning the ones you want to keep to a "work group" on the software, Also when programming, you can set up each individual channel in a band to always be on FM/SSB ect. So now I have 4 bands on my rig, UK and EU band are on FM and the third band on USB for the SSB frequency's and a fourth band on FM with only the 10M calling frequency, Now when i cycle trough the bands the mode changes automatically as I go which saves a lot of messing with the mode button. Also with the software you can leave any number of channels on a band just by simply deleting the frequency's in the particular slot, so for the 10M band i have just one channel in the band. It should come (if new) with one of the bands programmed to the UK40 FM CB channels. Out of the box the radio its a 10 meter Ham radio and will not have the UK FM channels programmed.

Hello Fred , Thank you for the amazing tutorial as always . I've only just started to use my CRT 9900 after over three years of purchasing it !. On first switch on it generated an awful loud audio screech with on screen error notification ? , I switched it off & on a couple of times & seemed to rectify the problem & it's fine now . I use preset CH 1 ,27.601.20 on the UK FM to switch mode to USB , I then tap in 27.555.00 for example & all is good , however if I want to go back to the UK FM I have to re tap the 27.601.20 back into CH 1 , I was wondering if this is normal operation on the 9900 ?.

Hi. I think ive got you. The memories are not fixed with this radio so if your on the mem channels and you change freq they stay changed when you come back. If that makes sense.

Oh absolutely Fred , I will just use CH 1 for the USB & other mode usage . I also have the CRT 6900 , but I've had reports of low audio , hence why I' m using the CRT 9900. 73 .@@CB-RADIO-UK

Oh absolutely , I've turned up the mic gain on the 6900 , sadly it had not much effect , however I purchased a cheap coffin Mic from Knights & that sounds much better , it has a much larger vocal diaphragm & works really well . @@CB-RADIO-UK

Hi Harry. I had the speaker stop working after i had dropped the radio and that was just a loose connection. Only issue some people have suffered is the final transistors burning out due to over heating. I think this is mostly caused but running full power on FM. You can buy a new set of finals for less than £20

Hi. The 6900 is fairly big for a radio nowadays. Its quite deep. The 9900 is smaller prob half the size. However small is not always the best as the 9900 runs a lot hotter at the back.

Yes you should if you carefully tune your antenna's SWR in the mid range between 27-28 MHz. It wont give you a perfect SWR at either end but should be workable. If you add a cheap in line antenna tuner it would spot on.

AM is around 15-20 watts. SSB claims 60 Watts but they actually transmit around 100 watts on a peak.

Nice one chris. Will need a bit of setting up to get best results You will prob have to turn down the mic gain on the 9900 and dont move the slider more and 10mm from min. Its easy to overload the radios audio.

Yes you can tune it to how many channels you like by dialing in the channel freq. You could program the memory bands to mids and highs etc if you downloaded the software and purchased the USB lead.

Hello! The only thing that annoy me is the fact that if we switch from channel mode let's say CB 19 into frequency mode and accidentally we change the frequency, let's say from 27.185 to 28.185, when back in channel mode, it will keep the changed frequency. Practically the channel mode became useless, each and every time, when switching between channels I have to check the frequency and compare it to the frecquency table and when driving, this is almost impossible and very dangerous. This is a way to avoid that? Thanks!

@@CB-RADIO-UK reset all, put it in export mode then change from frequency mode to channel mode. Like that, it will stay in channel mode only and you can see the fréquence of each channel but you cannot chose fréquences in between channels.

Normally the mounting threads are the same. There is no right or wrong when it comes down to antennas. As long as the SWR is ok i would say give it a try.

From a stone cold start they can be a little off freq on SSB. After 10 mins or so they are on freq and stable. They do run very hot a full power esp on FM.

The first double pot control on the facia above the mic socket. The main outer control is the RF gain signal strength but the inner ring (close to the radio) in the RF power control. Full turned anticlockwise the radio puts out around 1 watt on FM. You will need to connect a power meter to find exactly 10 watts but it will prob be just before the upright position.
