This guy is phenomenal. You can tell that his advice is genuine and effective.Being an inexperienced rookie, I recently landed a lead role in my school's play. I knew I had to learn more about acting. Let's just say I know a whole lot more than I did before watching. This video was as close to perfect as it gets.. thank you for offering such a detailed explanation along with the monumental fundamentals of acting.

Sir, you are amazing! 17 minutes before i wasn't able to deliver the dialogues with the required intensity. Seventeen minutes later, i can feel that i could pull off the entire scene. I personally believe that we all need inspiration and this has inspired me to take on an even harder scene. Thank you for sharing something so valuable! I salute you for your knowledge.

Acting Notes: No personal experiences required to act. Two main tools in acting- what is going on in our brain and body. Brain- objective, what a character needs and want. One story/objective only in acting. An objective is a controlled obsession, what the character should be thinking about nonstop. Body - emotion, what we feel in the body. The audience doesn't listen to what you say, it's about the behavior of the character. We can emote feelings by saying the name of the emotion and intensifying it through breathing exercises because all emotions activate in our bodies similarly. I think I am missing something...

Everyone can learn to act. Acting is a learnable skill. All that is required is an effort to learn. Learning to play a musical instrument or a sport requires effort to learn, too. Effort to learn and dedication to Master. To answer your question, only you know if you can do anything.

What helps me act a heavy piece without me being too emotionally attached to it (like to the point when I'll go home depressed) is to remind myself that in that certain moment, it's not me. That it's a different person, and all I'm doing is feelings what they're feeling and speaking their words. But I'm not the one living in that tragic situation.

I didn't really ever consider acting as something that I could ever, feasibly do until yesterday, when a casting call was released for the part of a lifetime for me. I so desperately want to submit an audition, but I did not have quite the confidence to commit until watching your free lessons! They have been an *immense* help! I only wish that I could afford to pay for a Skype lesson with Brad before the deadline, if only to get some feedback on the audition script. wow, I've always wondered about the art of acting all my life. Tonight, i finally decided to type on KZbin "acting classes" and ended up in this video and what a fantastic explanation. I was literally impressed when i practiced along evoking the emotion of anxiety and i literally fell it in a way i had to stop because i felt the exact symptoms out of nowhere. It's just amazing I had no idea that our brains could work like that. Thanks a lot, please add more videos.

3 years ago on a sleepless night, I stumbled across this video. I was 49, my kids were grown, and I needed a new hobby. Acting was something I literally knew nothing about. In this short video, Brad convinced me that I could act and got me excited about trying. I watched the rest of his videos over that week, read the books he referenced, and made a profile on Backstage with a selfie headshot. The next day, I got a day player spot on a telenovela that was filming in my city. After being in front of the camera with an amazing cast and crew, I was hooked! Since then, I've been in 11 films with lead or supporting roles, and recently won my first acting award at a film festival. It is one of the greatest joys in my life now. It's been a lot of hard work, but I don't think I ever would have found this new passion were it not for this video. Whenever people ask me how I got into acting, I always send them here. One day, when I win an Oscar, I'm going to thank Brad.

I started watching this because i really suck at acting. Everyone always told me, "Think of something sad' ' Think of something..' but even when I imagined something on time, it felt too fake. If i'd take a real memory, it wasn't even on time. I am going to practice feeling. And practice the breathing exercise. Just doing what you said already made e feel like i've become a lot better. Thank you very much!

You got it, Brian! You can do that with any and all emotions. Take a deep breath and on the exhale say the emotion, repeat that until the emotion is in your body and you feel it, because if you feel it, the audience will see it, as a real authentic emotion, that combined with thinking your characters objective will give you real human behavior. All the best to you!

Chloe Legg The hardest thing to learn in acting is to leave yourself alone. Learn how to give your body over to creating a character. Your essence will show to the audience, it will have nothing to do with who you really are in life. Once you learn the craft of acting, it will give you confidence to stand up there and tell a story.

This helps me so so much thank you. I'll be watching your videos from now on. I tried saying emotions such as nervous, anger, sad, happy, and others. And I truly felt them. When I said sad I started to tear up. When I said anger I felt my ears get hot. When I said nervous I felt a bit shaky. This is great. Thank you thank you thank you. Now I actually have somewhere to start. Next is a agent and manager I'm guessing

+Sydney Iski , Thank you for your kind words and subscription to the channel. We do recommend that you take classes for a while before jumping into finding an agent and/or manager. It's important to have a solid foundation in your craft. If you haven't already, please check out Brad Heller's video on 'Breaking into the Acting Industry'. This is really helpful information. Also, it's so great that you are trying out the technique! A quick note - when choosing an emotion you don't want to pick a feeling that comes from the emotion, but the emotion itself. So instead of saying nervous try 'anxiety'. If you are interested in taking lessons from Brad Heller, please let us know. We hold classes twice a week in North Hollywood, and also offer private lessons as well as Skype lessons. Here is our website www.thehellerapproach.com and keep up the good work!

Spot on! I always say "Actor is your Job Title... it is not what you do!" All methods/teachers Stans, Uta, Meisner etc. have relevant information and observations in working with human behaviour. Once you are aware of some of those tools, then the job of being honest, intuitive and truthful etc should be your motivation utilizing some of those tools to get you into the zone. Would love to come and work out with you in the near future. Will check the website out!

You are the best acting teacher I have seen, heard, could even possibly think of. When you shared the part about our favorite actors though, I thought of Meryl Streep, and I like her because she is one of the amazing actors ON SCREEN that I can connect to. She shares emotion naturally it seems. She makes acting not look easy, but she makes it look like reality. Like somewhere, out in the world, the situation she's in in that movie is going on right while I'm watching the movie. Thank you so much for helping me in my acting career!!:)

Wow. This really works. Believe me, when i said joy, i was smiling. When i said exhausted. I really felt exhausted. The thing is when i want to cry, i think of something sad, and a few min. Im bursting oyt crying. But thats when im doing something. Now, getting in the firm of acting, and i do this, or try at least, i fibd it hard. Im like, i didnt last time. Now when i want to go in a sad state. I feel an atmosphere of sadness, and my eyes are sonlmewhat wet but nit in an acual drip form. Yiu know what i mean? As for laughing. Its tge same as my crying. I cant seem to laugh when acting. Its really wierd. But all in all im getting there. But i want to be good. Like really good. You see im a begginner actress and i want to land many roles. And if that happens, that will be a dream come true:)

issraa farage We all know what words mean. Get a deck of 3"x 5" cards with one emotion written on each. Do one emotion for two minutes, then go to the next emotion card. Do this while cleaning house, etc. Not necessarily in public. First, take in air until you feel a click in the back of your throat as your air passage closes. Now, let the air out slowly and along with it the emotion you have from the card. Do this a number of times and each time let out even more noises as you exhale. It's all CONDITION REFLEX. It has to be there for you on the set. Any emotion can then be done at any moment. You are training the body. Issraa, it is one path to becoming a great actress.

That was a great video, I've often thought about acting and people have told me I should try it, but I've always been to nervous and shy. Over the last few days I've been looking at how actors get noticed and what lessons actors take and where they take them etc. But this is the first video I've watched about acting lessons and the exercise worked for me (least I think i did) I got really hot and my hands started to feel sticky, so I'll definitely be watching more, thanks.

I'm not even an actor I was just trolling thru utube and found this....I watched it paused it and to try this method .... and within seconds I cried on que yet fought the tears with a trembling smile because that's the feel the character needed.... I still felt the connection to this "girlfriend" I was now parting from after ten years yet I felt I had to quote "be a man" and accept that I was letting her/us go...instantly I was able to deliver that conflicted emotion WITHOUT drawing on any real life experience.....that was pretty cool BUT it took two or three minutes to turn the emotions off....I still was fighting tears and looking indifferent after I wrapped my scene lol GOOD COACHING!!

And also, i want to make it in the U.S. but i have an hard time getting rid of my Swedish accent.

I'm now 15 years old ,I don't live in the us and what I want to do is to first become an American citizen and then start my acting career. But i have no experience and the problem is that no one in my family or anyone I know is supportive and they keep discurouging me.I still want to become an actress though and I will do anything but I'm not an adult yet and I can't pay for acting/drama classes. What should I do? Hi Irene, Thank you for your kind word and support to the channel! There are many similar stories out there just like yours. We want to encourage you to pursue that artistic passion inside of you that wants to create! Relocating to the US to become and actress is a very big step. We would first recommend that you get some training. I know you mentioned that you don't have much support from your family but if you can find a way to take classes that would be the first step! Brad Heller has taught many people outside of the US over Skype webcam. These would be considered our online acting lessons. A one on one training session just for you! What you may also want to think about is volunteering at a local theatre or somewhere that you can be learning from other actors who are pursuing the same dream as you! For more information regarding Skype lessons, and the Heller Approach Acting School, please visit our website www.thehellerapproach.com You will find everything you need to know there! Also, for more acting tips follow us on Instagram instagram.com/thehellerapproach/ We wish you the very best. It would be wonderful to set you up with some training when you find the time to do so. Yes, it would work for every emotion but you would want to breathe the emotion, "serenity" rather than "calmness." Serenity is an emotion where as calmness comes as a result of an emotion. You would also want to determine your character's Objective for the scene as well. It is the combination of the Emotion & Objective which creates the authentic human behavior.

Thank you so much for sharing! I teach dance technique. I use certain words to get my pupils to isolate certain body parts quickly and efficiently. For instance. Most of us move from our shoulders and not our legs and stomach like technical dancers must (think Baryshnikov). So telling someone to "relax" their shoulders does nothing for them. They hear they are supposed to "relax" but that word does not help. So, to get them to do it quickly, I use and active word: "soften" your shoulders.

I always though actors would recall something in their life that they recall that was fearful or happy to emit the feeling for the scene. Brad's approach is better because you're not causing damage to your psyche.

Well, Brando always said "... acting is reacting." Stella Adler would tell her her students, "Darlings, don't take your characters home with you." That's what can induce mental duress if you do. I am also of the belief that the current vogue of "less is more" produces only homogeneous and technically proficient actors. Where are the personality driven actors of today? They seem non-existent. One can tell by the fact that impressionists can't find modern actors to parody in their acts because there's little about those actors that are distinctive enough to recognize. If the 50s to the 70s were the Renaissance of acting, this could be considered the Mannerist period.

@@thehellerapproach Update! I did not take Brad up on his offer because I'm in Houston and not a Skype fan, but owe much to Brad. I'm 52 years old, overweight, and losing my hair and eyesight. Less then two years ago, I knew nothing about acting. Longing for a new hobby, I found this video. It was the first video I had ever watched about acting. After that, I watched as many of Brad's other videos as I could find. Since then, I've watched this video probably 20 times. I read a book by Uta Hagen (Respect for Acting) after hearing Brad drop her name. After a few months, I decided to try my luck and landed my first audition with no other training and a selfie headshot, doing background and day player work for Univision. In November, I'll see myself for the first time on the big screen in my first movie premiere (Karma) where I play police detective "Barsky," have had small speaking roles (day player) in 3 other local/passion films, a paid commercial, and a supporting role in a promising pilot that may land on NetFlix. Acting has brought pure joy to my life, and I've met so many amazing, talented, and supportive people. It all started right here with this video!

Great video and it makes a lot of sense. Energy is "energy in motion." It's not "think back to a memory that made you elicit a particular response or emotion and try to reproduce on the spot." Focusing on the physiological aspect of emotion is an interesting way to think about it when acting. Thanks!

Your description on how to evoke emotions sounds almost similar to Michael Chekhov's psycho-physical approach called "sensations" and/or "quality of movements." According to Chekhov, the body is the medium to evoke emotions through movement (inner and/or outer movement). Good video!

I came up with this technique all on my own without taking acting classes by just sitting down and doing some critical thinking on what acting really is and I personally think I would be a good actor if given the chance but I'm from a small town out in the middle of nowhere with not enough money to travel so I guess I can keep on entertaining myself and let that dream coast on.
