𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: The Heller Approach is a one of a kind Non-Method acting technique suitable for all levels, from the beginner looking for an effective approach to start an acting career to the seasoned professional actor who finds acting no longer enjoyable, complex, mentally draining, and confusing. The Heller Approach Acting Studio, located in Hollywood, CA, was founded by an actor, director, and acting teacher, Brad Heller, is currently rated as one of the top acting schools in Los Angeles. We teach students at our theater in Hollywood and also on Zoom to students all over the globe. The Heller Approach provides you a simple structure and a fun way to learn acting, completely practical, without needing to indulge in “The Method” type personal experiences that can be extremely exhausting and traumatic. Furthermore, this acting technique will help you learn about scene analysis, cold reading, and audition techniques, various movie genres like comedy and drama, and create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
The Heller Approach is an acting technique taught exclusively by Brad Heller, who coached actors for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, an original member of the legendary Group Theatre, which was the nucleus of acting in the United States. Richardson’s fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the Group Theatre students who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about.” Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world’s finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson’s acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis and lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

I go to a performing arts college called the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and these videos have been a really great way to keep myself engaged in the mindset of an actor over my summer vacation when I have felt as though my mind has been rather stagnant. I have been reading acting books and the great works of William Shakespeare, but nothing is a substitute for a lecture setting like this for me. So thank you very much for doing something like this for young budding actors to reinforce foundational concept that apply to acting, and for making it free because as I had mentioned I am a college student. I hope that you all continue to seek out the progression of our work, and continue to teach.

These free lessons are great tools as you read Don Richardson's book " Acting without agony". +Alex Eli , Thank you for your support to our channel! There are many aspiring actors who are in your same situation. We encourage you to keep going as well. If there is a way for your to save money toward future acting classes that may be a good idea. In the mean time if there are any particular movies that you like, characters, or scenes of interest... you can always transcribe the scene. This is a good way to practice. Once you have your scene, start memorizing, and apply the technique that Brad Heller teaches in his videos. Or you could practice with a monologue. Also, there is a book that Brad recommends to his students called 'Acting Without Agony'( www.amazon.com/Acting-Without-Agony-Alternative-Method/dp/0205151655/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453248155&sr=8-1&keywords=acting+without+agony ) maybe you could purchase this at some point and read it as well. We wish you the very best and you are always welcome to take classes with us/ join the school when you are ready. Stay tuned for more acting video's! This is some of your best advice Brad.... This is exactly what I've been saying. I trust the work I've done. It also talks about emotion and it covers the power in a performance of saying nothing playing off of others. I have been saying this for years. You went over it all very well.

I'm now 26 years old and I've always felt that it was too late for me, but that's not the case. You're right, I want to become better at acting that's my goal. I'm a painter as well so that example really spoke to me. I don't sell many paintings and yes I've gotten discouraged from it at times...but seeing myself improve through perseverance and dedication I became better, even surprised myself with my most recent work. This was inspiring, and I'll continue to become greater.

I'm in a country where there's no Auditioning or any support from anybody. And its really bothering me the idea of me going to collage (next year) and doing stuff that I don't like nor love. I want to do something that makes me happy and something that I love and its ACTING. I grown up watching movies and performances that blew me away and had my attention and I've always wanted to be part of it and achieve something like that. To me its really not about the fame or the money, its about what I want to see myself in. I wanna be a great artist as you said. But I feel its impossible thing because of where I live. Its extremely painful to me and its killing me everyday just thinking about it. I'm looking for a miracle to save me from this. I really hope that you could help me. Thank you so much for your lessons. I appreciate it.

I appreciate your words of advice. When I was young I studied some acting, but was no good at promoting myself and never really worked. They always used to say, there are too many young actors, when you get older you will get work. So, I am really only dreaming about it but I always enjoyed watching serious actors talk about their craft. Even if I could do community theatre I would be happy with that.

Edit: WOW THIS WAS PUBLISHED IN 2012 ?? I AM SHOOKED I want to be an actor because when I was younger I used to love watching movies. What I particularly loved about them was how they could take you places, how they could make you feel emotions, and how involved I would get in the story I was watching. Since then I just loved storytelling and creating different universes and taking people places with stories and becoming someone else totally different from me and still being able to find similarities in what made the characters I played so true. Giving life to a character. I hope this makes sense. Btw: I’m a cheese ball if you couldn’t tell

Good day to you sir, this happened to me one fine day somewhere around last year that I felt optimistic about acting. Even while I type this in, There's this overly amazing happiness that you know what I really want to become an actor. I've had hardhips about not fulfilling my acting classes cos my family was and is against it so I had to leave an come back home. But this sudden rush hit my head since 2 months ago, The acting soul came back in me and I said to myself that if not the training then you'd rather taken up lessons by yourself by watching People like you where I'd personally get positive knowledge about acting. I just want to say thank you and for creating an amazing vibe to the teaching and learning. :)

Why do I want to be an actor? To blow minds. In the same way that my mind was blown when I was young. To where you're never the same again and wish to pass on that same sense of vivid hyper real experience to the world, so that people who experience it carry those memories into old age.

I want to be an actor, because I really want to be a believable character, and paint the picture in the audiences' mind. Recently I saw a play of Sherlock Holmes, and it really spoke to me. I don't even know why, but it suddenly sparked an interest of acting in my head. I wanted to be apart of things that could fill my own mind with wonder and happiness. I wanted to get others caught in the story I am showing them.

Although a bit late (I'm 21), I just recently realized that I want to be an actor, although deep down I've always been attracted to it. Thanks for asking the question "why do you want to be an actor". That put me on the spot, and it's definitely not for fame, I'm not bothered about that. I just want to be a great actor. I think about acting as a great art, for me, actors take me away and show me a different world, they show their soul even though they're "pretending" to be someone they're not, but they are making magic, they are really fucking making art, and I love it, people who makes me cry with a face, with a blink, with a sigh, with a hug, that's artistic and BEAUTIFUL, never die actors, you make of this world, a better world.

Thank you for the advice, it really has made me think about this possible career. I have been inspired by Jennifer Lawrence, and I think this video proves why she is one of the best. She is so real and honest, and it makes me question whether or not I could be the same way. I had always planned to be a pharmacist, but here lately, I have wondered whether or not I should give acting a shot...

I will touch base afterwards to see where I'm looking to take this. Would love to work with you in person but not possible at this time. I reside on LI., 30 min. east of NYC. Simply beautiful teaching. I enjoy your videos greatly. In my area it is hard to find a good reputable school to train at the art. Your videos/ lesson help me direct my art to embrace change and development. My passion for acting as long been grown within me since childhood. As an adult, the pressure of not going after my passion has erupted into an intoxicated deprivation of love. I now set aside two hours a day to practice. While attending school. I have also done a few auditions and got call backs for roles. The only success I truly feel is when I am better at the approach. Just like in sports. Great lesson

Well, the reason I want to become and actor is basicly to do what I love the most, because i'm incredibly passionated about it since I did my first play, I'd say i'm shy to a degree but when it comes to stage that shyness motivates me, it drives me further into the experience, and I feel like I get some sort of a hypnosis as I do it, i'd call it "staying-in-the-moment-hypnoze" not sure where it comes from, but it's like a drug to me, I love it so deaply, that I put my heart and soul into it.

The reason i want to become an actor is that acting for my oppinion isnt just and art but a way of life.Becoming an actor is like changing your way of live, constantly learning and living hundreds of others lives that your characters have. When you doing a movie you are not yourself you just magically changing body and living the life of someone's else and that's amazing, something that only actors can do and feel...Acting isn't just an art it's a way o life and living :)

I want to be an actor because it’s what I love. I’ve done a couple plays with my school, but recently I realized how much it really means to me. I actually feel empty without acting, physically. Being famous would honestly be a little scary, and that’s not my motivation. I just want to do what I love.

I have always dreamed of acting but being born poor did not think it could be my reality. I never really thought of why though. Why do I want to be an actor? Fame? Hardly, I was "famous" in high school but found later in life that most of those relationships lasted only as long as I was connected to their path of life. They may say now passing on the street but they are living their lives working, supporting their families, etc. But you asked that question and it made me realize, I love to entertain which is great for acting. But you made me go deeper than that. I have always had a thing about "walking a mile in someone else's shoes." I yearn to understand why people behave they do? Why they feel how they feel? And when I watch movies I see the devotion in some actors like Heath Ledger and Edward Norton. I see how deep they delve into their roles and it inspires me. That's what I want to do in life but I never actually made that conscience thought, I felt it but never connected the dots. That's what your question did, it brought to life why I was even watching your video. I know it's going to be hard getting into acting when I have a full-time job installing solar panels on roofs to support my life partner and child but there has always been a reason holding me back from this dream. I've always had to be the guy digging ditches, installing firesprinkling systems, mixing cement, laying brick, framing walls or some other back breaking work. And I outworked nearly everyone I worked with because of my commitment to my work. But watching this video has shown me I have committed to the wrong jobs. Acting is an artistry, and I love the feeling you get when an actor has done his or her job in breaking free our (the viewers) emotion. For 90 mins or so that viewer escapes the realities of their lives and get to feel with the actor as he or she makes their journey through the story. And I want to be apart of that. Thank you for making this free video. I don't know when but thanks to you I am beginning to learn how I can make my lifelong dream a reality. THANK YOU
