FREE CAMPING NEAR THE GREAT SAND DUNES! (AND EXPLORING MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK)

We are loving our time in Colorado! We start off this episode exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park and then head back to camp to show you a great free camping spot we found on Campendium. We stayed at San Luis State Wildlife Area and get this, we had free 50 amp hookups! They have a dump station on site as well but no water hookups. Not bad for free! We moved to Mesa Verde National Park next and had an absolute blast running around this park. It's safe to say it jumped into our top three National Parks! Jason also upgraded the control panels for our air conditioners; now we're able to control them remotely!

The Great Sand Dunes tend to be windy because it's the consistent wind in the area that formed them. They are a marvel but hiking them can be tougher than anticipated. Your feet sink in every step which makes the ascent harder. Every gust is like getting sandblasted. It's best to minimize exposed skin if you want to hike them.

Next time you are at any sand dunes, wax the bottom of the disc. You'll fly down!

San Luis Lakes Wildlife Area does not have potable water. In fact, that is why it is no longer a state park. The water system got contaminated and rather than pay the huge costs to fix it, the state just decided to remove it's state park designation. Also, for those over 62, camping is free and the access pass is not required. I also spent several nights at site 16 and 3 weeks next door at site 17 earlier this summer. Great camping spot.

That's a great place in the fall. The dunes at sunrise are awesome. I have shot some great images there as the sun breaks over the ridge creating some cool abstracts on the dunes.

The real cliff dwellings are down by the four corners. Colo springs are not the real thing, just made for tourists.

Toured Mesa Verde too and loved it! Check into Hovenweep National Monument in Cortez,CO if you have a chance. Very similar history and equally interesting and amazing stars at night
