Don’t judge the owners. Mine got like this when I had a stroke and was in the hospital two months. My teens and kids tried but they had their stuff and would go see me in hospital every day. Don’t ever say anything bad, you don’t know what anyone is going through. Even the experts on KZbin don’t show you everything. I know they’re not super human and spend 24/7 cleaning. But we all do the best we can.

Same! We had a very traumatic birth of our son who wound up in the NICU for 2.5 months and came home with special needs. My home is definitely similar to this one. Most homes (including mine) go back messy in a matter of days, because it needs to be decluttered, and not just cleaned. I am in the process of getting rid of so much stuff and then organizing, that way it can’t become messy.

I agree...too.much stuff makes keeping a clean space impossible. Also...how many people live in this house. That was a TON of shoes! Just put the ones not worn often in the closet and keep the ones worn often by the door...just my thought as I live in a small house with a family of five and also have a shoe rack by the door. I am frequently rotating commonly worn shoes in and out of there to keep this mess from happening

You're the best. People don't understand how brain work when they are depressed, overwhelmed and with anxiety. When I do something my brain doesn't let me, I start feeling stress and I feel like my time is running out and I take hours to do simple task and I start to cry and I just can't finish what I start. When I am not depressed or stressed my brain bypasses all of that and I can clean so fast and I don't feel overwhelmed at all. Like when I am depressed my bathroom takes me 3+hours to clean and when I am not depressed I can clean it in less than 1 hour

After seeing generations of hoarding in the homes of my friends/loved ones taking hold in latter years, I was made aware that it didn't happen overnight. Although a traumatic event might have been the initial trigger, there might even have been other issues related to declining physical/mental health. Eventually more trauma, embarrassment, shame, the person became so overwhelmed that simply deciding to start was an issue and it was just easier to tune it all out and ignore it. I commend people for getting the help that you both recommend and also provide. You are wonderful.

I find that it's easier to keep clean if you get rid of unneccesary things and keep it minimal, buy things that are easy to clean and not easily broken, make notes of what to do, separate outdoor and indoor shoes, give responsibilities to everyone in house, clean the little things immediately, make it a habit to put everything in its place after use. That and of course time management, although this only help so far if you have the capability and time to.

The best comment so far. There's too much stuff in this home and too many surfaces covered in little things. Containers and closed storage reduce visual clutter and actual dirt and dust collecting on items. I know these things because that is what makes my childhood home impossible to clean. I will definitely keep a different system when I'm lucky enough to have a home of my own.

Dish detergents are much, much better than they used to be, so the order of washing doesn't really matter, except the really dirty pots and pans should go last. In any case, if someone was washing your dishes, for free, to help you out when times are tough for you, you probably wouldn't be critical of the order.

They will never understand. It's like trying to understand why it (statistically) takes an abused woman seven times to leave her abuser. I don't understand that but I can also understand the fear and hesitation over planning to leave. The worst, however, in the context of cluttered houses, is they think they need to understand to have empathy and compassion ... they don't. I often see comments from those who could use help and wish I knew if anyone lived near me because I'd love to help. I understand. I have a few conditiins, physical and mental. The truth is, each human has something, whether they tell anyone or not. I've heard this man suggest just do 3 ft, or a desk top, at a time. I've heard suggestions of setting a timer which wouldn't work for me as I'd be anxious about the timer going off. You must take care of yourself and you can only do what you are able to do. If you have a close friend maybe they can help you for a bit?

I understand, because my home is almost like this. Wish I can afford a housekeeper. A year ago my husband had a stroke and shortly after that my mom started having hip problems. She had hip replacement surgery 5 weeks ago. I have been sleeping at my moms at night for the past 8 weeks. Fortunately I can work from home. So my schedule is work from 3 am to 9 am. Give my mom breakfast. Then go home and give my husband breakfast. Then got back to my mom by noon give her lunch come back and give my husband lunch. My sister gives my mom dinner so I get the opportunity to do any errands or the laundry. Then I give my husband his dinner, tidy up the kitchen and it’s time to get my husband ready for bed. Once I have him in bed by 10 pm I go to my mom. Get her ready and in bed by 11 pm. Try to get a snooze and is up at 3 am to do it all over again. On Saturdays I have a bit of help so I go to the office and work from 6 am to 4 pm. I also have to take both to doctors appointment and therapy. So believe me when I say I understand and empathize.

It got so bad I finally had a mental breakdown. I finally learned to purge my stuff and that helped a lot and I finally pulled myself out of that depression but it was hard. Thank you so much for helping them.

I am so proud of you! I moved ‘more then 3 times durning Covid with little kids and it was exhausting, finally in my appt for year and there boxes in my clothes that still need to be unpack because can’t find place for it. It so stressful when you don’t have a spot or a place things can be and you remember where it’s at. But working on it slowly! A lot easier

I have known I have ADHD. But I worked hard to keep up with everything. Then Covid… stuck in a 2 bedroom apartment with two small children. Looking forward to moving in Aug2020… nope! Still in that tiny apartment cuz the housing market is insane and can’t afford a 3 bedroom cuz prices got hiked up so much! Last year I had a miscarriage at 15 weeks after a difficult pregnancy, then my husband needed tooth surgery and then we got covid. It just went downhill from there. Finally getting everything back in order but it isn’t easy. It has been a tough few years. I didn’t know how bad my ADHD could get till I wasn’t able to take my kids to a playground and was not able to leave much due to the world being shut down and then everything else followed. It has humbled me a lot to understand others situations.

You're so right. I have my own cleaning company that I work daily at plus I work full time at a restaurant cooking 5 to 6 nights a week. I might have one day off a week in a month if I'm lucky. My own home gets like this at times. Cause when I finally make it home and take a shower it's bed time. Plus I dealt with so many physical and mental health issues to were I was unable to do anything for a long time.

I saw this video and my first thought was where do you even start? Id be totally overwhelmed. Then I remembered what my apartment looked like exactly 1 week ago before I cleaned it. Let’s just say ADHD + busy schedule + living alone + health issues does not make anything good. Really cleaned (like vacuumed and all) for the first time in 2 months. Now my house is clean. Well, it has been almost 2 years since the last deep clean, but you just motivated me to finally hire a cleaner to do that for me. :) Honestly, about $300 a year to get someone to do a deep clean is totally worth not having to ever do it myself.

My house definitely looked like this (maybe not as bad, I don't have kids thankfully) when I was in the hospital and didn't have physical strength to clean. My two friends popped over and cleaned it for me after they saw what condition it was in. Not everyone has people that love them enough to clean their space for them when they're not strong physically or mentally. So before you judge, just consider the strain these people are under.

You did a fantastic job! The house will be easier to keep tidy now that the rooms are not overwhelmed with messy clutter. I let my basement “go wild”, mostly because I work FT and have a house to run. I became stressed just thinking of going down there. Cue the pandemic and a cancelled summer vacation abroad. That basement is now a work of de-cluttered and re-organized art. I enjoy the space now and find it easy to keep clean and tidy. That job took the entire two weeks of my vacation, and is the only thing I thank COVID-19 for.

I'm barely managing to maintain My job right now, so cleaning is at the bare minimum to keep it liveable. My home isn't at this level yet, but it's definitely not in the shape I'd prefer it to be. I genuinely feel bad for whatever this family is going thru and i hope they find healing and happiness soon. I'm sure your amazing help will aid with this. i feel like we all had a friend who had a house that was kinda perpetually in a state of slightly organized chaos. single parent home or constant traveling dad 3+ kids.. and at least in my experience the mom was always super nice and always apologizing for particular things like "oh sorry about that, jimmy was supposed to put those things away... JIMMY!!!" and kinda not acknowledging that the entire house was like this. the houses always felt super busy with their kids and their kids friends coming in and out and parents alot of the time not being in the house as they were at work and just doing their best to get by. another odd thing was their house was always the house we went to as a group of friends to hang out for whatever reason.

My place became like this when i focused on looking after my father who had a stroke, and then I fell and broke my leg and could not stand for long but still had to make it to my fathers to feed him. Eventually i healed, dad went from his place and into a home and i hired a regular cleaner, once a week during this transition.

My husband is an clean and organized freak, I follow his example. We taught both our sons to do the same. As adults they are clean both slobs. Clothing all over the place the bed unmade shoes tossed in the entryway, and where is the kitchen counter?. What the heck happen? They come and visit and our house is like a tornado gets in every day!! My husband and I take a good 45 min. to an hour to pickup and put in order MOST of our Houston’s together. Believe me we love and enjoy them tremendously and our life is most definitely focused on them when they’re here. Picture this both use three long towels a day (=6) one for the morning shower, one for the pool side and the last for the last shower of the day to remove the chlorine. Two towels on their bedroom hardwood floor and one on one of the cushions outdoors. Both boys took outs all 17 seating cushion’s lounging and patio set to get the “ oasis” feel like a holiday but didn’t take anything in the cabana at night not even their multiple bottles and cocktail glasses indoors. What are we butlers! We asked them to pick it up they responded “ok after the movie “ but they were to tired and went to bed. Sorry I’m ranting here it’s just so frustrating. Spoiled brats!

Yes. And I don't care how many kids people have or how busy they are, you have to just stop and take 10 minutes and do it. Even a 5-minute straighten up to just clear surfaces and floors, throw away trash, and put dishes in the d/w, every 2 or 3 days can avoid this kind of mess piling up

@@cathyshaw-kalloo237 yes! even MORE important with a large family... heard it called " Clean as you go". When our ( five ) little ones were ready to go up to bed we had s game: "Ok: everyone has to pick up exactly SEVEN ( or adjust the number to fit the mess ) toys and put them away. Because it was only a finite number they didn't seem to mind at all. They thought they could fool us by picking up what they thought was 'easy' but it was still picking up stuff! We didn't care how large or small...we got good at estimating the number ( times five ) and their toys would all get picked up in two minutes..they would giggle and get it done for us!

Great job ! I've read a lot of the comments. Many write about how messy a house can become in a matter of days. Maybe I'm much older than the commenters. I have never lived in a messy home. Growing up, my parents taught us to always have a clean house. That stuck with my sisters and I. I've had people tell me, they have never seen a house as clean as mine and one person said it looked like a luxury hotel. I'm 69 years old at this point and I still maintain a very clean home. A clean home can be accomplished if you live by this: A place for everything and everything in its place! I didn't mean to get on my soapbox. 😊
