In Spain we have also free chargers in Lidl supermarkets (quite similar like in this video) maximum charge: 7 KW

Great video. Lidl are really forward thinking company. Our local one has a free charger and has been proven very popular. We've now switched to do most our shopping at Lidl as it's ideal to do a charger whilst you shop, although its a little too popular at times. Thanks Lidl!

Always used Electric Highway when we had a chademo Soul but as we are now CCS with a Kona went for the 2 x CCS/chademo units at most Instavolt sites instead. My god what a difference, silent 46-48kw real output and any contactless card payment (although still free at present) and units inspected repaired and cleaned every two weeks or sooner if they have a problem. Electric Highway is throttled to 43kw max to try and stop the DBT units from overheating. Electric Highway really need to get a minimum of 2 CCS everywhere now, take card payment and be reliable before I will think of using them again.

I've used the InstaVolt chargers a few times and I agree, they are great. I'm not sure why they are still free. It's a little concerning. As odd as it may sound, I hope they start to charge soon. Giving away a product is not a great business model as Ecotricity have discovered. I'd like them to be a success.

I was at a Moto service station several months ago & was approached by a Moto head office staffer claiming to be scoping the site for their own charging solution - didn't mention ecotricity. Wish I'd asked more questions but was only in for a splash & dash. One interesting thing he did say was they were expecting mass adoption & needed to cater for it.

Yes, ABB are good, but I don't recall the ones I've used being silent. Efacec are also as fast as the 50kW CCS standard goes (which is 125A). DBT-CEV are not only slow (which ends up being good on a very long trip, because they won't heat the battery so much) but I also find that they tend to overcharge for the electricity you get. Whereas on Efacec the car usually measures about the same as the charger (check using Torque Pro), on DBT-CEV the car measures less. An explanation could be losses in the cable, which is usually quite big and is rolled over the top of the charger, but is probably not as thick as it could be, so there's a lot of losses...
@ZeroTailpipe6 жыл бұрын
Great info, thanks. Any discrepancy between charge delivered and charge billed is not good :( I’ve suspected that a few times on DBT so interesting that you raise this... The poor reliability is my main gripe. Don’t mind being overcharged a few percent of it actually works ;)
@lesliesmith64426 жыл бұрын
That is wrong, there is not a lot of loss on the cables. Loss would turn into heat, which would make the cable hot and malfunction. Billing can be done from the DC or AC side. For a DC car charging, if you billed from the AC side, the efficiency of the charger would add to the bill. e.g. at 92% efficiency, the car would consume 9.2 kWh, but the bill would be 10kWh.
@simoncanfer50306 жыл бұрын
PodPoint/ABB rapids are great. Good that we can also use AC if the DC side is in use, albeit at 7kW. Shame Ioniq doesn't have 3-phase AC! I think all charger locations should have a couple of AC 7kW points available as well.
@ZeroTailpipe6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Interesting to know the AC / DC usage conditions :)
@lesliesmith64426 жыл бұрын
The DC Rapid chargers can have their output set depending on the up stream breaker rating, or the rating of the DC cable from the unit to the car. So if the cable was rated to 100A, then the max output at 360V is 36 kW. But another car which a 400V battery would be able to draw 40kW. The noise is the unit chopping up the AC waveform at 10kHz so it can use a much smaller transformer, before changing to DC. Newer models run at 20kHz, so only annoy children.

I have a 7kw Pod-point charger at home and think it's great. It's quiet connects by WiFi too my app to keep track of the charging rate and cost. It usually fully charges my 60ah BMW i3 in about 3 hours 30 minutes and costs about £2.50. I only charge from home and have not tried a public charger yet.

@@ZeroTailpipe I was made aware of the company from Robert Llewelyn's FullyCharged KZbin page. They even do firmware updates to the unit when they find more efficiencies. My other choice of a charger would of been the Zappi charger.
@chriswortley55 жыл бұрын
The home AC chargers are just a fancy plug that deliver power to the cars own charger. I would be worried if there were any sounds coming from these.
@2namtaB5 жыл бұрын
@@chriswortley5 it's not just a fancy plug, it delivers twice the power you would get from a normal household outlet and therefore reduces the charge time by half.
@chriswortley55 жыл бұрын
Lol. Its a common mistake, the standard AC plug does not charge the car or increase the power available in any way (don't get picky I know they have various safety features). Its just a connection between the upgraded supply (to the plug) and the cars own onboard charger. Only a DC often called "rapid chargers" can charge the car.

On this charger, you only can charge 1 car on DC at the same time, DC and AC can be charged together. Here in Germany we have a lot of this ABB-chargers and mostly they work fine. If you want to hear a very loud DC-Charger, you should try one from Efacec ;-) And the Ioniq tapers off at 82% SoC to 22kW. You can check this and other things with Torque Pro for Android and an OBD-Dongle.

@@ZeroTailpipe Fastned says, they will expand to the UK next year. On the newer stations they have 175kW-chargers, an Ioniq can charge with 67-68kW max there. There’s apparently a rapid charger at the Bentley Lidl which might serve the area you’re needing? I looked up on the Pod Point app and there aren’t that many rapids in this area (yet). Most are 3 or 7kW points only. I checked back and the one in this video that I spotted whilst driving past was in the town of Todmorden. Not a short detour from the M62 sadly. Only useful if your route takes you North from there, say up towards Skipton, as the charger coverage is a bit patchy in that direction generally...
@jasondavis5456 жыл бұрын
