Awesome vid and info bro! Would be a dream if VRE covered Part 61 flight training even if just Commercial and CFI. Got my PPL at 32 years old and it’s crazy to pick up and move a family to a new city for a 141 school when all the instruction is available at a reputable Part 61 flight school minutes away. “Veterans Readiness & Employment *but only if you’re getting a degree” … Thankful these opportunities exist but seems wild they’d rather pay for a $50k dance therapy degree than help aspiring aviators fast track through Commercial and CFI. Would be cheaper too I’d think, done bitching lol

The only thing I say about this is, don't wait. You can start with using TA and CLEPs to finish your CCAF and then start on your prerequisites. If you take enough classes you can qualify for FAFSA and make money going to school while you're enlisted. Then stash that money away for flying.

Update to this: I talked with my VR&E councilor yesterday and she advised that the program had recently changed and getting flight training to become a pilot is no longer offered. You can still get request flight training to become an instructor though. Additionally, the Liberty University website even states they no longer accept any VA payments for flight school at all of their affiliated schools.

I want to go fly for a living like the rest of us. I'm planning on going the instructor route. It's one of the few paths to hours without being well connected or independently wealthy. Instrument is usually built in to programs. the general path after private is; instrument, commercial, CFI, CFII, multi-engine, MEI, MEII. Liberty includes all this. With all that you'll have about 300 hrs. then you need about 1000 before someone other than a flight school will hire you. ATP is 1500hrs with a bunch of specific hour requirements. R-ATP is a reduction to 1250 hrs if you get a degree in flying from an approved program.

I was directed to apply for these VA benefits 1st because Post 9/11 most likely won't cover all the expenses with a degree program, so here I am. Great information. Did you have any troubles convincing VR&E to allow your chosen path? I'm in the process of laying out my plan, and my VRE rep is really supportive of my goal and is impressed how well informed I am about becoming a Commercial Pilot.. from what she tells me she's heard from her peers is that "management" will turn everyone away that wants to go to school for CP.. I mentioned how you've been accepted so that it is possible. I'm applying to Purdue in the next week, and I'm hoping with an acceptance letter they'll approve me.. if not I can appeal, or just use some GI Bill and reapply for VRE.

My question is can I just tell my Councelor that I will fund the PPL myself and not to worry about that funding and just fund the program? My Councelor doesn’t want to approve flight training without me having PPL license. He wants me to pursue my other path cybersecurity which is really not my passion or interest

Well, unfortunately the VA has made it to where Liberty University can no longer use it's flight affiliates for VA students. Your best bet is to get on the phone and call around to every school and flight school in your area. The approvals of flight programs come-and-go at the whim of the VA so it's hard to keep track of who is even operating. I used to use Charter college, but I believe thir program was disapproved by the VA.

VR&E can be difficult. The “counselor” I dealt with said she “doesn’t feel comfortable” with me being a pilot since I have a PTSD rating even though I have a class 1 physical from an AME and fly already. The “counselor” can make a decision to deny based on their own judgment even if they have zero knowledge about aviation. Best bet is to find a part 141 school that is partnered with a university and go from there. Liberty University is a great route.

Let me save everyone time.. you have to pay out of pocket for your private, or get a loan. VR&E and G.I. bill will NOT cover it. In the meantime, if you have an sort of disability rating, prepare yourself for the FAA to come in and HAMMER you to obtain a flight medical, especially if diagnosed with ptsd. To the tune of three years and 10k. How do i know? I did it. It CAN be done, hard road. 40k out of pocket, first class medical and private, VR&E is going to cover the rest.

So I have a question since you used Liberty, Did they provide you with a degree plan that included the 2 courses that cover the PPL? I am currently still Active Duty (retiring in ~2 years). When talking with Liberty, their first 2 courses that essentially cover the PPL are for some reason *not included* in their degree plan. Now I'm not looking at VR&E at this juncture, but I was planning on using my GI Bill to at least have my PPL started to open more options prior to me retiring. However for whatever reason Liberty is saying that I wont get funding from the GI Bill for those 2 classes. I don't know if this is due to the local affiliate, or Liberty's own policy, but they are not including the first 2 flight courses in their degree plan. I'm hoping that I can use a FAFSA pell grant + potentially some Air Force Tuition Assistance benefits to cover some of the cost of the ~15k they quoted me for those 2 classes to obtain the PPL (which unlocks all sorts of options as I mentioned), however even with all that I'm probably still looking at 7-8k out of pocket, if not more. Its still cheaper than knocking it out via Part 61, as I'm @ Travis AFB and there isn't a ton of cheap places to fly here. I have ~4k hours as a Flight Engineer, and can transfer 500 hours toward the R-ATP/ATP. I was going to complete a program in NJ, however I was forced to PCS due to the KC-10 divestment. worst case if I am unable to do anything here in this god forsaken place known as California, I'll be moving back to the east coast and completing it there, but I'd like to get a little bit ahead of the curve before hitting retirement.

The VA won't pay for private pilot as a general rule. Some folks have found courses that somehow get it done, but this is not the norm. You'll have to pay for it yourself. However, if you watch my other GI bill video, I explain how to do that with student aide. Tuition assistance will also not cover any flight courses. If there is anything I've learned on my own journey, just spend the money and start flying. Any time spent waiting on this or that is just wasted time.

What if I already have a great job with excellent pay (teaching in a flight simulator, actually)? I want to go get my commercial/multi/ATP ratings and go airlines, but aren't they likely to just say "You don't have an employment handicap. You've been at the same job for __ years." Also, if I already have a bachelor's degree, do I have to get another bachelor's degree to get the flight training, since they don't do "vocational-only" flight training?

VR&E follows a lot of the same rules as the Post 9/11. BAH is one of the perks. It doesn't have the same annual cap. SO you can take all your training straight through and not have to stop when you hit your annual cap.

Do you need a bachelors in aviation to get your commercial license? I’m 2 classes away from completing a bachelors in an unrelated field and not sure if I have it in me to restart. How does a program like ATP compare to what you are doing? I have about 24 months of VRE benefits left and 100% of my GI bill remaining, so I have lots of research on how each program will cover flight school. Thanks bud.
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades 2 жыл бұрын
You can usually transfer 60 credits towards a bachelor. Sometimes more. So it will be half starting over at worst. ATP is a vocational school meaning you will pay much of your flight training out of pocket and have the GI bill pickup 60% of the bill from what I understand. I'll say right now, I did not do it this way so I may not have the best information on this approach. I really only know about the processes I've been through. To answer your main wuestion, you do not need a bachelor, or any college, to fly. It is just the best use of GI bill funds to reach that goal.

@@BurnoutsAndRotorblades I appreciate all the info and have a pretty good understanding of the process now. With that said, how would you describe the workload of doing full time school with flight training? I printed off Liberty’s aviation degree program and it seems like taking four 8 week courses over a 4 month period plus flying would be challenging. I think my current bachelors will eliminate a little less than half the course work, but it still seems challenging. Thanks, and hats off to you sir.

@BurnoutsAndRotorblades Жыл бұрын
A commercial license can be done in a year. It's 250 hours. Being an airline pilot takes 1500 hours and a ton of other requirements within those hours. That certification is called an ATP. There are some VA approved programs out there that will take you from private pilot all the way through CFII. In the majority of cases, you will have to move to where they are and take classes in residence. It's easier to just pay for the PPL with a loan, and then pay the loan back with Pell grant or GI Bill BAH payments.

I'm a little confused by your question. VR&E follows almost the exact same guidelines as GI Bill as far as I know. So, you'll need to find a VA approved degree program that has a flight school program. Liberty university has the Flight affiliate program. If they have a flight affiliate in your area it might be a best bet. Other than that, you'll need to move. The GI Bill and VR&E give the BAH while in flight training if that helps. This has been my biggest obstacle. I can't move and I can't survive on just disability and BAH.

On that note, If you haven't already gotten your medical records you will need to. Best to get both paper and digital copies from the records department of your closest military hospital. A VSO should be able to help you out with better details. Put together your claim, file. . . . .wait. . . . . do your compensation and pension exams . . . . .wait. . . .receive decision and potentially get paid for your disabilities.
