Thanks for this Dawson. The painter analogy hit home particularly well for me. As someone who has been looking at programs and writing them for 18 months now I spent the first few months making the same mistake you outlined with that analogy. Looking at someone’s style of programming as if it’s gospel rather than seeing what are the overlapping principles it shares with other programs and what is indicative of that particular coaches personality, how is it tailored to their goals or the athlete’s goals, and like mentioned later in the video what is a part of trends going on right now. With training There are many correct choices, no perfect (or better than everything else) choices, but there are definitely worse and bad choices. Making it mesh well with a lifter’s personality is usually the way to go.

I Love It When What I Heard Is Lead By Example And NOT By Words Of Science When You Don’t Have The Experience Being Only Book Smart! Also The Talk About Fitness Journey Being Like Painting… Great Analogy!

*Hey man I really like your stuff. I like how you've incorporated the ATG exercises with Powerlifting. Do you have any programs for sale? I would particularly love to see a Powerbuilding + ATG program. Also I'd like to see you upload more, I think you have a lot of potential to build a big following*

I like what he said about painting, and I like what he said about the "evidence based approach". I definitely think in the beginning you need to follow the rules so to speak, because before you can break the rules you need to understand why they are there The analogy I will give is like in boxing. Beginners should always do things exactly as the coach tells them, the textbook way. Once they have mastered the fundamentals they can break the rules and do things their own way and find even more success, but that only works if you understand how to break the rules correctly So in the beginning I made sure to learn as much science as possible to help me understand why the things which work work, and then I just used like a guided intuition and my training became a lot more art than science and my results got even better

What would you suggest for a 51 y/o. More interested in bodybuilding and health. I still like to get closer to whatever a top bench press is for me. Is there something simple i can do to hopefully increase my bench while doing my other bodybuilding workouts.

In principle there is no reason why you can't follow any generic program. Age doesn't really limit you in this regard. The only things which will be different is that your progress might be slower, the weight on the bar will start lower, recovery will be lower (so you might have to train less frequently or do less exercises), and you have to be more careful around any injuries you have. My advice is to start in any generic program which has good reviews, and don't be afraid to make adjustments that you feel are necessary due to your age If you're looking for some programs I recommend the KZbin channel Alexander Bromley. He is an excellent Powerlifting coach, and a high level strongman, and he has a lot of free programs and just generally excellent educational videos Good Luck! 😊

How should someone program if they don't compete?
@dawsonwindham1113 Жыл бұрын
I periodize the same, based off their goals more than the competition date. Training should have phases.
