Confession time. Many years ago, we were inbound at night to O'Hare in a DC-8. We were cleared to hold at Northbrook. Lots of holding going on...maybe a dozen aircraft. Instead of tuning 113.0 for Northbrook, I tuned 113.9 (O'Hare VOR). We were sitting in the hold for a minute or so, when ATC pops up and says, "Someone is holding over O'Hare". We grinned at each other across the cockpit, thinking, "Someone's in trouble". ATC had each of us ident in turn. Totally embarrassed when he said, "That's the one" on our ident. No deviation reported by ATC, but lesson learned: always identify a newly tuned station, even if you've done this a thousand times.

Absolutely love your content. I too used to wonder why holding patterns were to the right and not the left. The answers I found stated that it is to the right due to the 'right of way rule' when encountering other aircraft. Essentially, if an aircraft in a holding pattern were to encounter another aircraft, they would turn to the right which also keeps them on the known protected side. A lefthanded hold is an exception due to obstacles or sound abatement.

Great video and very helpful. I had some confusion about the radials (to or from) but after watching it again I think you answered it for me, so I'll go and do some investigating with this new info on my own. If I'm still confused I'll ask, but thank you for the vid. Great content.
