Really enjoyed this one!I don't know if anyone else will comment about it, but we've had several of those over the years and that oil pump is crap. They either fail or the young kids will forget to put any 2 cycle oil in the little tank. Then they wear out the piston/jug. I just finally gave up and bought a decal that says "USE 40:1 PREMIX" and stuck it on the tank! No problems after that!

I’m fixing up a early ish 2000’s Chinese quad (Tao-Tao). I got it for $40 saying it needed a “carb cleaning”. I figured it was worth a shot. After a few youtube videos, several google searches and a couple weeks waiting for parts. I fixed it. New starter, new gaskets, new carb, new bushings for the whole thing, new battery, new headlight, new tail light and new to the quad plastics, it’s running like a top. It’s just a 90cc but my son loves it. Watching your videos just shows that determination, tools, trial and error and if available, vast knowledge. Junk can be resurrected. Idk if I would’ve gone as far as you did with this quad but my hat is off to you.

Mustie, I wanted to thank you so much, because your channel has taught me more about engines and engine repair than I every thought I would know. The locating pins for the piston ring gaps on a two stroke is there to keep the rings from rotating, and getting the free end of the ring caught in one of the cylinder ports. Piston ring gap normally tends to migrate around which is not a problem for a four stroke, but can be catastrophic in a two stroke.

THANK YOU, MUSTIE, FOR ANOTHER GREAT Fix It VIDEO ! Here's a few tricks for you to use... I started a kewl trick, when you're taking something apart, especially if you're not used to...Take your cellphone and take a picture of it. BEFORE you start. Write 1, 2, 3, etc on little 2"x 2" pieces of paper, and lay a number next to the item you're tearing down and take a picture. then tear down some more and show the part you took off and lay a 2 paper next to the item and take a picture. Do that all the way thru till the end. If something needs descriptive wording, write it and lay it up there and take a picture. When you get done, you have a picture book of exactly how it goes back together. I started that, back when I couldn't remember how the hoses went back on my wife's Cougar that I had just rebuilt the top end on. I gave the idea to a computer tech buddy of mine, that was starting to work on Laptops. He made an extensive library doing it...so even if someone ELSE tore one down, he could use that library and put it back together! Another trick, if you're afraid a pin is going to fly across the room, lay a piece of plastic wrap across your part and put a hole in it, just big enough for your punch to go in it. when it flys out, it is deflected back onto your table. If you have a "waist-coat drawer" under it, it goes in there. Dad worked on fishing reels, so there were tiny springs and screws that were easily lost! A friend of his worked on watches and clocks and showed him how to make a watchmaker's Waist-coat drawer". Its a 3"deep wooden frame (30" x 30" with 12" longer side rails that would stay up inside the runner slots under his workbench). The bottom of the drawer was a piece of heavy cloth, rolled onto itself and stapled all the way around its boundry. It hung down and laid on your knees a little, as you sat at your bench. When you tore down things, the parts would fall onto the white cotton cloth and become very visible. Dad used-white towel like shop rags. When one got a hole worn in it, he would change it out and turn the old one into a rag. He didn't loose any parts. I hope those three little goodies of different trades, will help you. You're already a wiz ! Those will just add to your toolbox of knowledge. Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

@Mustie speaking of two strokes running backwards, I used to have a Harley (Cagiva) 175 when I was a kid that would occasionally run backwards after kick starting. The first time it happened I went flying backwards into the garage into some boxes! After that I would gently feed the clutch to see if I was going to go backwards or forwards after starting. 😄 The bike was an absolute PoS with terrible electrics and it vibrated so bad the bolts holding the pegs and mirrors etc would undo all the time. Happy Days. 👍

Yeah, plastic surgeons must have more patients, don't they? Either that or mechanics really love losing a finger or two every now and then... For fucks sake please stop using plastic tape on open wounds, is it so hard to keep a couple of finger bandages around? A whole box of those is like 5$ or so, add another 5$ for a vial of proper disinfectant and a pair of rubber gloves and you're set. Now think about how much hand surgery costs and tell me again which is preferable. Treating wounds like a caveman doesn't make you look tougher or smarter by any means...

My best success with fixing broken plastic is using a dedicated wood burning iron. They come with great tips for this work. My favorite tip I would call spade shaped, or rain drop shaped. I run the point in and along the crack creating a valley and two ridges. Then I use the flat part of the tip to push the soft plastic ridges back down into the valley. Then I do it to the other side. I make the valley deeper than half way so when I repeat it on the other side, all the plastic has been melted and merged together. It works great. The crack disappears. And if your careful the repair can look great. Never like new, but as good as can be expected. Sometimes this will cause a little thinning in the area so I usually cut off a strip with a razor blade from somewhere else for filler.

That must have been *so* ******* satisfying, when it burst into life. I'm no mechanic, so I wasn't trying to guess the problem but when I read the comments, after watching the previous video, I did notice something. For every commentor who said you were trying to start it backwards, there was someone else who would explain that you were right..... and *why* you were right. Not a great deal of help to a complete novice like myself. Another thing I thought of..... what a crappy design !! Surely the bike could be built in such a way that it doesn't fill up with mud, water, critters, critterfood and crittershit? Taking it apart seemed unnecessarily complicated too. Still a fun video to watch and great to see the thing fire-up in the end.👍 Cheers for now, Dougie.

Had to replace a jug on a Red Max leaf blower and put new piston rings on it just because. Pulled over great with the plug out but locked with it in. Checked and rechecked and nothing was wrong. Finally just kept spinning it over with a drill until the new rings lapped in and it lit off.

Shop vac on the exhaust port would have pulled even more water/mud to the top side and locked it up even harder, most likely bending the rod or worse?
@RichieCat42234 жыл бұрын
@@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes But this would have been done with the spark plug out when you spun it over with the drill.
@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes4 жыл бұрын
@@RichieCat4223 OH- then yeah, maybe - but the way he did it (other than fully removing engine and splitting the cases) was the only real way to get it all out and be sure it was clean - I think the main crank bearings and lower rod needle bearing are trashed now because they sat in water!!! theres a reason why that mud in the bottom was orange -
@RichieCat42234 жыл бұрын
@@Mad-Duk_Machine_Werkes Like I said it would an experiment. You are correct in tearing it down to be totally sure of the lower end. Use to water cross my snowmobiles and I they sank the case had drain plugs in them to get the water out.

Wow, spins the reverse you'd ever expect, who'd-a-known! Interesting that the arrows on the belt are facing the wrong way as well... :) RichE San Diego, CA

It's not spinning the right way the clutch is a give away
@throttlebottle59064 жыл бұрын
that's the "right" side of the machine and that would be spinning towards the front, the same direction as if the wheels were rolling forward.... the belt and centrifugal clutch are on the other side and the belt would be going "forward" on the top. that isn't a clutch, but is a flywheel with magnets spinning around coils for making power, it's a combination magneto and generator/alternator since the machine does have a battery for starting..
@googleplusisdead4 жыл бұрын
@@throttlebottle5906 Maybe I'm not reading you right but the "right" side of the unit has the magneto and generator, the "left" side has the clutch and belt. The "left" side turns clockwise, to the top of the belt goes towards the rear, and the arrows point forward, check out the video again. Mustie even mentioned it was on backwards but since it was on that way, he was leaving it that way.
@googleplusisdead4 жыл бұрын
@@MaNNeRz91 Huh? What's the "right" way? Clutch is on left side of engine and turns clockwise, therefore the belt is on backwards, and Mustie even commented on that.

First time you've noticed. If you go back to some of his earlier vids the odd S and B used to slip out, but i think he's been making a conscious effort to keep it family friendly since the channel has grown somewhat.

There's a knack to hand cranking a car starter handle so it doesn't get you. My Dad showed me years ago, I think he'd learned by experience/pain!
