That oil filter is a prime example of my motto as a mechanic: its always something dumb. When things don't add up, always take a step back and start checking the easy things that may or may not be related to the problem at hand. Has saved me countless hours of troubleshooting.

Yes sir! Over my years I've noticed such easy fixes most of the time! KISS technique is how I start, engines need spark, fuel, and compression in a perfect manor or its not gona run/run good. Recently my father in law quad would not keep a charge at all, New battery last year, he was getting pissed. I told him did you check the water level of the battery? He looked at me like I was stupid, but told him pop the cover and fill it up, sure enough after water added (distled) it hold a charge and started right up. Looked at me like "really, that was all it was?!" Mind you he knows much more than me but he doesn't follow the kiss princable. Aslo my neighbors lawn mower wouldn't start, asked me to look at it. Immediately I remembered it rained hard last night and she had plastic wrap on gas cap... Needless to say with 5 mintues I found a massive amounts of water throughout the whole system! I could have chased other things but a red flag like no cap should be your first clue! Keep it stupid simple first!

I rebuild motosports carburetors as part of my work, I have a small salvage yard and also rebuild carbs. Take the carb off. Hit the carb body, in the choke plunger area (on the exterior of the carb) with a propane/MAPP torch for 15 seconds. That little brass choke plunger will dang near fall out. They get varnished up. ~200 degrees will make the varnish liquid again for a few seconds. Works like a charm. I have removed MANY stuck choke plungers that way. Keep the heat cycle short, and cool the carb body with compressed air, no damage will occur. Pinpoint heat is the answer. Your videos are great : ) I watch them when I am not spinning my own wrenches.

The cam journal galling is/was fairly common on those older Honda engines. The 250/300/350cc TRX/ATC machines all used the same design. Lasts forever is the oil is changed regularly and kept full. Megacycle offers a boring service to enlarge/recondition damaged journals, which then means you can use needle bearings on the camshaft. Good work doing a DIY repair!

I've dealt with that funky cam gear design on a number of occasions, brings back old memories watching that struggle! As for the polishing of the center bearing journal, I would use aluminum foil pressed into place but first use brake parts cleaner or acetone to degrease that journal, then cut the center hole with a razor blade, then masking tape to hold the foil well below the journal. Tape the bolt holes off. The polishing should be done after using one of those grinding wheels in your kit, as the rag wheel will only polish the grooves, not remove them. I wouldn't remove the high spots all the way, as that will leave too much of a gap after bolting the top back on. The new cam with a small piece of very thin 1200 sand paper wrapped around the center journal can be used to check just how much to remove and from where. I would also use a black permanent marker to paint the journal, before sanding the high spots just enough to find them. Keep in mind this trick will 'over-indicate' at the upper ends of the journal and not go deep enough at the lowest portion. It's just to keep the work parallel to the cam. If I had a junk cam to work with, I'd grind off a pair of flats on the center journal, leaving just a 1/4" to press the sandpaper into place with. That way, I could work the very bottom of the journal without removing anything from the upper ends. A metal lathe makes it possible to make a custom sanding tool to do the same thing, using the outer journals to guide the tool I've discovered the hard way that the oil pump is capable of failing to prime itself, and thus failing to pump oil to the upper end. This on a XL250 that I wound up installing two brand new camshafts & rocker arm sets, before getting it 'right'. For the 2nd attempt, I left the upper oil feed pipe off, no sparkplug. Walked the bike around the front yard while in top gear until I saw oil come out of that pipe

The counter shaft roll pin sheared, and put the balancer out through the case, but we split the engine, fixed the shaft and got the case welded. Was good as new Got stolen, burnt, and we got it back and still ran it. They were slow and rode like a stone boat, but are tough ass machines. And light enough to throw them around when you’re stuck We ran it for a solid 10+ years until us boys grew up and bought our own machines, but it still ran and was sold to another owner. An hour and fifty minutes! Excellent! Now that's a video you can really get your teeth into! There is definitely something not right with the original carb, assuming that it was the original. In almost forty years, it might already have been swapped at least once? It certainly likes the replacement, and for my money, that's where I'd leave it, and put the original away in the stash, toothpick and all (to remind you that it's a dud). I wanted to get my dad one of these when they were new, but my pockets weren't deep enough. Now, I'm in the same boat, I could do with one myself - This video has renewed my interest in these machines. Around the 1:39:00 mark you can see gas spraying out of the carb (and it happened with BOTH carbs). That should not be able to happen, if the timing is right. I watched, slightly earlier in the video the fuel filter and lines get SOAKED in gasoline by the gas spraying out of the carb. Mustie saw all the gas and thought there was a leak. It sprayed out of the front of the carb. The carb should ALWAYS be under vacuum, not pressure.

They will send it to the scrap yard and get nothing instead. I saw two smaller quads on the pile at the yard Wednesday. The plastic and seats are toast here after a summer in the sun with 115 degree temps. But the rest is fine after cleaning the carbs. Wondering what the raised work table is? Harbor freight has one for motor cycles that raise up pretty high. I thought about getting one and widening it. Having a table like you have would be great. @samuraidriver4x42 жыл бұрын
@@dontblameme6328 using other types of plastic doesnt really work that great, you dont get the same bond as you do with using the same plastic. Especially melting in zip ties can be risky because they can release hydrogen cyanide when burned (considering they are most of the time nylon) It sort of works but matching is always the best option. I don't know about the states but here you can get free filament samples that are 20 meters long, that's alot of repairs.

I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and really like your style of trouble shooting and repair. So many people get frustrated and quit, I like how you stay positive and keep trying. Has it always been this way for you or did you come up with a strategy to keep the plesant mindset when working difficult issues?

Heck yeah! Thanks for only making it a 2 part rebuild. You could have milked it for 3 or 4 and i would still have watched. Thanks for saving "JUNK".. Should make a few bucks off this thing as good as it ran in the snow. Hopefully it isn't the thicker cold oil keeping the cam alive, lol. Glad the bottom end survived that abuse with the oiling issue. Yet another revival from near scrapping. Thanks for all the content!

For plastic welding... use an old soldering gun to heat and embed stripped scrap stranded electrical wire. Works really well. Check out 65ford's video on it.
@b.griffinarmstrong86772 жыл бұрын
If it is ABS plastic you can also make an ABS plastic slurry with scrap ABS and acetone and paint it on in layers. I also used painters fiber tape to reinforce the "welded" area. The acetone in the slurry will fuse the slurry to the pieces you are welding together then evaporate and leave hard ABS. Google ABS slurry for more info.

I grew up in the era of these machines. The early 4x4 models had terrible turning radius but at least they had a differential. Fuel issues, I’m guessing mostly due to a weird carb design, were common among 3 wheelers too. Amazing you figured it out.

One of the main reasons for this top end damage is that the fan is controlled by a temp switch that is made to come on at 350 degrees. I did come up with a fix for it that I would be happy to share with anyone who wants it. Yes 350 degree oil in not a good idea.

@@jackdewinter6837 I disconnected the temperature sensor located on the lower right side of the engine. I then ordered a 67F110 110C thermal switch and mounted it to one of the cooling fins on the head. One of the leads of the 67F110 connects to the wire you removed from the original sensor and the other goes to the ground screw that is used to mount the new sensor. I also used hi temp wire and heat shrink to seal it all up. I located the new sensor on the front top most cooling fin on the head. I hope this helps. Good luck 🤞

So, all the damage was caused by oil starvation due to the filter being installed backwards. That was a major bonehead move. Some people should not do their own maintenance.
@moconnell6632 жыл бұрын
But a wise engineer would have added a feature to the casting which would make backward insertion impossible. Everything seems obvious when it is clean and under bright lights, but that is rarely the case in normal circumstances.

Its a suuuuper common mistake. And an easy one to make. My cb has the same filter setup, except its meant to go in the other direction. Same filter, but the inlet is in the engine instead of on the cover like it is here. Now if that doesnt confuse things idk what does. And before you ask, no I haven't done it wrong, its been going for over a thousand miles without issue, so its been done right.

That would be a design failure on the oil filter. The installation should be obvious or fit only one way. Engineers are supposed to foresee problems like that and make sure they don't happen.

I had the same issues on my 91 250 x.. I had badly worn rockers and chain was stretching. I went alittle further and replaced piston an rings also. She was good as new after.oh I cracked the cam plug apon assembly. I recommend getting a new one. They get brittle with age. Great machines 👍👍
@muskokamike1272 жыл бұрын
31:35 this is where plasti gauge comes in. When you torque down the head it will squish and you measure how much it squishes. if it is too wide, you have to shim the rocker cover up. If it squishes not enough, you've got a problem. This is the same issue I had with my F150 when I broke a cam cap: The rocker cover and head are bolted together and then line bored/ground to the right diameter. Mine was the caps which means they aren't interchangeable.

Honda weren't the only ones with top end oil feed problems. Pinto engines of the same period also suffered from damaged cams/followers due to lack of oil, fortunately the cam bearings were not affected. Later models and repair kits came with a modified feed pipe.

One of the main issues I see ( Or used to ) is people running the wrong oil, I have a 79 XR250 that I've owned since I was 16 ( now 54) and Honda calls for 20w50 oil, everybody I knew with these bikes ran 10w30 which is a big no no. I use Honda 20w50 in my Engine which isn't even close to stock with no oiling problems. Back in the day there were companies that would machine the heads to run Bearings on the cam, had a few FT500's with this done. Al Baker was the man back then who had all kinds of trick stuff for air cooled Hondas.
