this tool (like makehuman) has been around years! and you do not see those type of games because the base mesh's license (in this one), prohibite their usage on games and other realtime rendering 3d apps. Also, the base mesh is not optimized for games. I believe this is why Manuel Bastioni lab (the original name) decided to finish the project. Because no one cared about the project. I mean, Having Daz3d, MakeHuman, Adobe Fuse, Reallusion's Character Creator. Why bothering with this tool?.

The AGPL can be an obstacle in case someone wants to create a closed source game or closed source 3D models using 3D characters made with MB-Lab because the AGPL will propagate from the base models and from the database to the output models.
@RajeshKumar-oj1xw4 жыл бұрын
The licence is AGPL but now they have dev tools for creating new characters. MBLAB DEV TOOLS.
Typo error it is MB Dev Framework....It creates new base mesh data...

@thesufficientgatsby4 жыл бұрын
MB-Labs licensing doesn't work for selling character models though, unfortunately. You have to redistribute under the same license (AGPL3) and provide all the source files for free even if you modify the base model extensively. Makehuman has an iffy base model, but at least you're allowed to make a profit with it.

This is just the community keeping the project alive, although, the base mesh's license prohibits usage on 3d apps.

This is just a quick step if you want to be able to visualize what you character may end up looking like or if you are going to be creating a lot of characters. @igorgiuseppe18624 жыл бұрын
ok, now that i saw that, the licence sucks, unless you want to make an cg movie with it. try make human instead. if you make an model on makehuman, it is Creative Commons 0. as long as you dont modify makehuman, dont use any plugins on it, or if you modify you send the patches upstream and they accept it on the oficial repo, then you use the version that contain your modifications to make human. if you do as i said above, then your model is licenced at CC0. if you make any modifications to the model (after you export it to an external tool), you own the copyright to those modifications.

@razagr4 жыл бұрын
yes, very limited license , see github.com/animate1978/MB-Lab/issues/292
@SianaGearz4 жыл бұрын
The original author of the software (Manuel Bastioni) had a provision that the software is dual licensed, and that when you use official binaries from his website, you can generate the models under Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution license, so they could be used in games. He apparently really wanted to be controlling over software and didn't want anyone to fork it. I think the combination of Affero GPL (open source infected output), and the still somewhat restrictive CC-BY license for some uses is why software never gained a lot of users. I for one have a hard time reconciling someone making these kinds of decisions with building open source software, and i was a maintainer of a large open source software for a time myself. In fact growing the userbase is something i succeeded with my project to the tune of half a million recurring users, but i didn't have it in me to monetise my project so i had to leave it behind basically, as i went broke and tired simultaneously from working on it. I didn't want to beg for money. So i very much understand the feeling of frustration Manuel must have experienced, as the similarities are all there, and i failed in a similar manner to him, but i can still criticise his approach and outlook, in fact i'm probably the perfect person to do so. In fact i believe in this day and age you can't lock anything down and expect to gain much from walling it off, it works for more traditional businesses, but middle grounds can be really bad. If people don't agree with your conditions they'll either disregard them (pirate) or they won't use your stuff, and the latter is more likely, which to you, doesn't matter, you lost either way, and in latter case worse, you lost a potential advocate and grassroot promotion for your project too, so the only thing you can hope for is to actually gain traction by whatever means possible and then hope that people are insightful enough to want to support you, which of course can turn out one way or another. In 2018 he made an attempt to make some money off it by opening a sort of asset store to buy model accessories. After a week in which basically noone knew that this is a thing, or that he needed funds, because news sometimes travel slowly and he wasn't very explicit about it, he sent a number of frustrated mails to different parties and shut the project down, because it was apparently financially unviable. But i mean, what exactly did he expect to magically happen? Probably nothing, thus the half-hearted attempt, but i mean we're firmly in the self-fulfilling prophecies territory there, to put it nicely. This forked project now thus occurs under the restrictive conditions that were laid originally by him, they can't do much about it. That Manuel didn't change the license to more liberal while halting the project stinks of lingering resentment towards his userbase or the wider community, and i can't exactly say i find this sympathetic, like, slightly relatable, but weak in character.
@MrFrostCA4 жыл бұрын
Yes you got it right. you can only use the output (Any model made with MBlab) in open source projects. This is why Manuel Bastioni Lab never made it big. Is a very restrictive tool. I mean for being "open source". this is actually a dead project, the original creator (Manuel Bastioni) drop the project arround 2018 - 2019(? I believe, and this is just a small comunity trying to keep it alive. but it is actually quite useless. IMHO. Take a look at Makehuman Instead.
@blakecasimir4 жыл бұрын
@@MrFrostCA Are you sure this is still entirely the case? The newest version claims that this is not any more IF the user is NOT using the included AGPL models. So were some newer, non-AGPL, models to be included, those could in theory be completely open source and commercially useable.

@blakecasimir4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure? Legalese is legalese, it is by its nature a trickly path to ramble though. GFS and my own reading of it suggests strongly that licensing of the models made with this tool now depends entirely on the license of the SOURCE MODELS. The current included models are AGPL. New models _could be_ a less restrictive license, but they need to be made first.

@@ali32bit42 Not gonna lie, that sentence of "I would rather die than use this tool" is a little exaggerated bud, it's not that big of a deal. But yes, I do agree with you, character creation tools can only take you so far before you start hitting the limitations on what you can, and can't do with them. It'll come to a point where your characters will either start looking the same, or the characters will look super ugly and creepy in an attempt to make the character more stylized or unique. This is why is always better to know the process of manually modelling and rigging your own characters from scratch, yes it takes more time and effort, but if you get good at it, then you can't argue against the good results, and most importantly, the freedom to make the type of character you want, on any style you want ; )
