You are just saving plants that would just go to waste. No one would bust you. Your knowledge of plants is why you can get baby plants for free. Then your care of them continues the process of growing them to mature plants. It's a positive thing. Way to go!

That's what we think! They would be weeded away (or die when frost hits) anyway. :) And in our own garden, we're making sure the plants that we want get priority :)

I loved this video and it's motivated me to make time to collect seedlings in my garden and grow them on. Also, my son has offered me some of his seedlings so we will do a swap. Thanks again and happy gardening! :) PS I like waiting til the spring to add in new plants as it gives you time to 'reflect' on where you want them to go and also space to put in yet more spring bulbs.

I've been doing this too lately and enjoying it. There are some plants in my garden that I originally bought about ten years ago and I have kept them going by digging up the self seeded babies each year. Was surprised yesterday when what I thought was a rescued Foxglove seedling turned out to be a Verbascum now that it's grown and is about to flower. Still a lovely plant though. You have some nice areas around your house to collect baby plants. Good to see Mahlatsi at the end.
@perennial-garden

We’d love some more verbascum! It’s on our list for next year ☺️. Hopefully the one we had self seeded - we didn’t collect seed from it in time. But surely it’s there still 💚

You’ve inspired me to collect three baby Echinacea plants and one Heuchera Migranta in front of the hospital my Mom is waiting for surgery, today. After securing those treasures I chickened out as people were watching and my boys grew impatient with their plant crazy Mom 😅 there were absolutely stunning grasses there, too. But I guess I hardly can bring my spate, dig up, and separate the plants in order to get baby grasses 🙈

I did exactly the same perhaps a month ago. I have a lovely ornamental grass (that btw arrived in the garden by accident) and wanted to propagate it. When I went to collect the seeds I noticed that there were already a few self sown seedlings growing around it so I just potted those up. So now I have around 20 young plants growing and looking good for a new border I plan to create next spring. Buying those perennial grasses would cost me €8 or €10 each. Almost €200 is not a minor saving!

I love this video. I have been collecting seeds everywhere this year and also baby plants but it always feels a bit illegal. So I started collecting them from just outside of the plant borders where they are, this way I have free plants and I help the municipality with weeding 😅. Do you ever feel like that or like people watching you when collecting?
@perennial-garden
@perennial-garden 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching 💚 We generally only collect from public spaces - and like you, where we know the seedlings will be weeded away. Lars is pretty quick at it - so that helps with the suspicious behavior feeling 😂

Thanks for this plant saving mission - bursting with helpful tips like usual! Unfortunately I don't have a greenhouse. You said one could leave the pots in a sheltered spot on a terrace. Even during the winter? I can't believe it.
@perennial-garden

Yes... if you get them rooted before the frost comes, then you can easily leave these out if they are perennial for your area. The ones we showed in the video are perennial for our area :)

I love the self seeders. Now I’m old I just leave them where they are. Can’t do the bending down. In Spring everything just pops up and May and June look beautiful. I can’t manage all the dead heading so plants finish earlier but in old age it’s a way of carrying on.

Thanks for video of graveyard at Xmas. It’s so beautiful and respectful what you do!! My poor family grave there’s no space to walk alongside to fix plants etc. no one unless we do wreath on the grave they are left to sink!we lost one gravestone to sinking and had to buy a better one. You’re doing such a lovely satisfying job for your sleepers. On another note Lats in this video I see you carrying in black tray. I have two but can’t remember where I bought them. Can you tell me where I can buy more for instance do the Amazon shop sell I can’t find d them anytand they great for watering water runs through. I look forward to your trips in Denmark as my family comes from Copenhagen and I’m always looking for that too. Your English is wonderful I can’t read or speak danish and still have cousins there your country looks so lovely and clean. You’re a great family too!!

How great that your family is from here! It is a wonderful country... lots of rain... but beautiful and green because of it :) As for the trays... we bought them here at a local hardware store. They are boot trays (or shoe trays) -- things you put boots on when coming in from the snow. They do work well to hold pots too :)

I wish garden culture here in the United States was alright with us taking little starts from other peoples gardens/community gardens. If I were to do that here, it would be considered stealing. My neighbors would never let me take any of their baby plants. 🌱 Instead, I rely on garden centers to source plants, which often means spending lots of money 💴
